It looks sorta sharp on the right, and a few other random spots....had the same problem with my phantom but more defined. Sent it to DJI they put a new camera on and its way better but still not perfect. I guess we will know In a later video when you guys try the focus button. Its weird that is has a focus button because those cameras are usually set to infinity.

FliteTest Yea, I was wondering why the focus was a bit off. Doesn't it have any proper/good auto-focus? The picture quality, compared to the P4, feels a lot softer (not as good contrast) and more saturated (as someone mentioned).

Did you guys tap to focus? The image seems out of focus, It seems that the camera is not focusing into infinity right off the bat and many testers don't seem to be aware of, resulting in either out of focus or very soft images.

Follow me is a gimmick feature that most people will use one time to test it, say "that was cool" then never use again. If you follow FAA laws there will be very few times someone can use follow me. I've had the feature available to me for a very, very long time and have never used it to shoot anything I would keep or post. Don't base your purchase on "follow me", " object avoidance", or anything else that really doesn't work all that well and is very situational.

That won't work for video unless you simply sit in one spot and hover. Think about it...... The video is very soft in everything I've seen. Tapping to focus will only work if you don't move, so anything with this little guy moving will be soft. Small lens, small sensor, means soft video and small field of view.

Does it have autofocus on the camera? Sure the iPhone can't control the focus of the camera? Just said, try. Cant hurt to check it out.

I think we'll have to wait until the full production models hit the streets this month before passing judgement. But from what I've seen so far it does have autofocus, but there was one reviewer who said you need to tap the screen to focus the camera (like you do with your iPhone) or it will come out soft. There are also some reviewers who are leaving the clear plastic protector over the camera and that would certainly add to the softness. But, let's simply wait and see....no rush to order these as DJI is getting pretty good with production. I'm holding off until the GoPro Karma hits the streets as well to do a direct comparison. I have a feeling the GoPro camera will produce better video and stills, but that's just my guess.

This whole tap-to-focus, how is that supposed to work during a video shoot in flight? If you set the focus to infinity, will it stay there for the duration of the flight? Nobody seems to be able to answer this. I mean, pause at 10:26 - it is DEFINITELY not 4K or 1080p. In fact it looks like something from the Parrot AR toy drone.

Yeah when you're just going to fly it around without any particular subject you need to make sure that it's on infinity focus. From what I understood this is done by pointing the camera at something in the distance and tapping it on the screen like how you would do it with your smartphone camera.

I've read somewhere that you need to tap the screen to focus on something, like you do your iPhone camera. This makes sense for still shots but not video, so I think what we're seeing is the drawback of a really, really, really, small sensor. You can't expect Inspire 1 level of sharpness and color saturation with such a small lens and sensor.

Well sensor/lens size doesn't matter as far as sharpness and contrast goes, smartphones have already proven that. I think DJI doesn't think through about how focus should work on this view angle, since they no longer have a fixed focus at infinity. It also comes down to how much in device sharpening they applied, I always feel that Phantom 4 over sharpened the image like a lot of smartphones do.

Im not a dji fan, but starting with the phantom 4 as far as an initial price release goes, and onto the mavic, Their pricing has become much more acceptable. as a diy builder of many thing rc, to get all the features seen in the mavic pro, youd have to spend close to $1500 if you want similar reliability and image quality along with the various typical consumer appealing features. If you dont need all the jazz of a dji product, then you need not complain and just enjoy the hobby grade world of flying tools such as multirotors. everything has a function. and if you are able to build exactly to your own specifications, the pricing is all up to you. dji didnt invent drones. it is the diy folks who pioneered the ground work in the hobby world which allowed the lesser technically inclined to have options suitable for them. take this with a grain of salt, as were not dealing with a black and white subject. personally, aside from the camera quality of a dji, I rather not be limited to its pathetic, barely useful performance traits. its better to build your own tools. thats what humans are supposed to exhibit strong qualities of.

Quick question: You were a bit worried that in the RTH mode you can't adjust the altitude and it would get caught in the trees, but wouldn't the obstacle avoidance kick in and avoid the treeline when it was landing? Just curious if one overrides the other or takes precedent over the other.

Pretty cool first impressions guys :) Good point with the back arms on complicated surfaces like grasses and non perfect flat surfaces! Looking forward for more reviews of it! Having a non super sharpper image is not really a big deal and some kind of little advantages if you enjoy colors grading but at some point it was a bit concerning! Just hope it will be not the case on the final version! I'm still more interesting by a P4, i want a flying tripod and i will never fly it on tight areas like this one! Is there some raw video from the recording? The video from the Mavic doesn't look very good. Another question, can you grab this out of the air instead of landing it without getting hit with a prop? The Phantom is 'landed' quickly and safely by grabbing the landing skid while it is hovering next to you.

Every test I've seen done I marvel at the comments because this Quadcopter has a tap to focus feature that in the early models, with no documentation - not that early testers could wait to read them anyway - so they wouldn't know about this feature. Later on the testers realize the feature exists and the quality increases exponentially. I really like this review because it seems almost raw, not as high a production value, but very on point. These cameras normally have a fixed infinity focus which leads me to believe the camera is either defective or the lens was not properly focused at the factory. Either way I hope you guys can sort this out because I really want one =)

You're correct, most do, but the Mavic actually has an auto focus system that can focus from 0.5m to Infinity. You are able to lock this focus, and I have seen many videos of people testing this new done but the focus is being locked very short when it is near the ground. I'm sure DJI will update their app to make this focus lock more obvious.

Thanks for the illumination! =) I did a search and found a page on the DJI website that described precisely what you stated - the Mavic's camera does indeed have an autofocus system

LexicalHD heard that to Plus if you listen to what Peter says on one of his KZbin videos it sounds like he enjoys the hobby more at his own pace than in an environment like flite test where he may have felt more confined to deadlines/pressure. I totally get that.

Another Question, if you are flying with the FPV goggles on can you set the controller to tilt the pictures as you would be inside an aircraft as you turn and bank. I understand you can do this with the DJI Phantom 4 Pro?

rab it is meant to be flown via the phone screen. OcuSync makes it pretty great.
