In this video I test the audio quality of the new DJI Mic and share how different settings for the gain in the transmitter and receiver can affect the signal to noise ration of the audio that is recorded in the camera. I also go through a very important camera setting you have to make to get good audio.
At first, I was quite dissapointed by the audio I captured while having all settings set to default. I also had auto levels applied in the camera. But I'm glad to say that with the right settings it's possible to record audio with much less noise using the DJI Mic.
In the video I share the settings I use.

Since this microphone is optimized to pickup sounds in close range while avoiding too much surrounding noise, I don't think it's ideal for your use-case. You can try to increase the gains as much as possible and you'll certainly get ok audio. But I think what you are looking for is a Zoom Stereo Recorder. But best give it a try for yourself and see if it's sufficient for how you use the audio.

I have a question about editing with the DJI. If I am conducting an interview and I do not have the transmitter going into the camera, will I have to download the audio from both transmitters and then sync both tracks to the video and then delete the portions from each transmitter that I do not want? or does the receiver do the recording? thanks in advance for any help.
@mibreit-photo
@mibreit-photo Жыл бұрын
If you dont use the Receiver and just the transmitters and their Backup track, you have to sync in post. Merging the teansmitter tracks in a Software like Davinci Resolve, for example, is easy. I have a recent Video on that. But if I did an Interview I would use the Receiver and ideally have someone monitor it. Just to clarify, the Receiver does not record a Backup track for the transmitters, just passes through to camera

Need your help. The first time I used these dji wireless mic and uploaded my video on KZbin the sound turned out too low. I had set the transmitter to + 3 and receiver to +1. Also I am using a dji Pocket 2 with a dji audio adapter. What audio levels do I set on the receiver and transmitter to get a satisfactory audio if not perfect. Thanks . I cannot find any videos on YT on setting gain levels in different environments. What's the thumb rule for setting gain levels between the transmitter, receiver and the camera I.e dji pocket 2
@mibreit-photo
@mibreit-photo Жыл бұрын
You can go higher with the gains. I have +6 in Transmitter and another +4 in the Receiver currently. The camera levels are below 50% to reduce noise. But whatever levels you set, you also have to tweak the signal in your video editing software. You should aim for something around -5db so the sound isn't too low. I typically add gain in Davinci Resolve to get the signal strong enough for my KZbin videos. There are great tutorials available. I'm no expert here, just learning by doing.

Hello, what do you mean with headphones level? When you edit, you should use good headphones and an audio level you would use when watching videos yourself - I usually have it set a bit louder to when I want to check for noise, but ultimately you should have it sound good at normal audio level that most people use when watching videos. But I'm no audio professional. What I think is good audio, might not be good audio in the ears of a professional ;-)

If I move the receiver to the other side of the camera, there is less noise. I have been using all automatic setting. Not sure what the problem is.

Hi there, to be honest, I didn't yet monitor with the receiver. Usually such an echo would be the result of a delay somewhere in the transmission chain. But there shouldn't be any, otherwise the Camera would also have a hard time to get the audio in sync. You monitor at the receiver, right? I guess you should check with DJI then, maybe they have an explination or a firmware update. Sorry I couldn't help

In software like Davinci Resolve, you can separate the audio channels onto different tracks and edit them separately if you want. You would simply duplicate the audio track and for one, mute the left channel and for the other mute the right channel. Maybe there's even a simpler approach. I don't know Davinci in depth ;-)

does DB gain reduction helps to reduce surrounding noise in DJI wireless mic?
@mibreit-photo
@mibreit-photo 7 ай бұрын
Edit: My answer below is for the noise of the system itself. With surrounding noise, do you mean noise from street, other people and the like? For this, what you must do is get the dji mic close to your mouth (sound source). Usually, other surrounding noise is not very audible then. First Answer: No, you must increase the gain in transmitter and receiver and reduce it inside the camera for the best quality. The later in the transmission chain you add gain, the more you will increase noise. Most noise in my case was added by the camera when the digital signal was converted into analog, fed into the mic-input of the camera and then amplified. But you should do tests with your system to find the best configuration.

Hey Michael, thanks for the review. And your possible solution to the problem. I got my DJI Mic too and I’m just trying to work out the perfect settings. My voice is loud and deep and I’m having problems with clipping. So I’m having a very opposite problem of you. Now watching your video i now realize that you also have a clipping problem, especially when you do your “solution” and you are actually having a very calm voice. I already reduced the gain on mine to -2 on my transmitter but im still hearing clipping now and then. I just released a video about the DJI Mic where im talking about that. Do you have any good ideas on how to go about that? Did something change for you after this video. I’m kinda disappointed. I payed over 400 usd for my Mic in South America and now it has these flaws. Thanks 🙌🏼

Hey there, cool channel and nice reaview! I hear what you mean. I think with lower frequencies you have to be very carefull with the handling of the audio signal. I don't think mine clipps out of the box. But my processing in Davinci Resolve is sometimes not on point. I edit most videos on the road without proper head-phones ( I really need to invest in some ). And I also noticed for some of my videos there's clipping because I added too much gain in post. What I find interesting is, that out of the box, mine is very silent and I have to add a lot of gain and you have to reduce the gain. Although I have a calm voice, there shouldn't be such a huge difference between two people talking ;-) So this is weired and maybe they have some variance in their units - a big variance it would be then which is not good. Did you try to only record the backup audio and play around with it? I the clipping the same as when you record directly to the IPhone? PS: What a bummer that it doesn't work with all apps on your IPad. With my Dell (Windows) I have no problems connecting it and getting audio in any application. PPS: I might get my hands on another microphone solution soon (cheaper one) and I will do some comparison. I like the DJI mic, but by now there are many solutions out there which cost nearly half the price. So it will be interesting to see how those perform.

@@mibreit-photo thank you for your long answer. I highly appreciate hearing your angle on this issue. The dji mic has a hefty price tag and for that amount i was just expecting more… magic, just like i said in my review 😆 ! Thanks for your good words to my review. Overall it is an interesting tool and i hope after playing around with the settings a bit, i will be able to get things more streamlined. Whats to consider is that in my review i didn’t do any audio post processing, just normalized the volume levels. So maybe with a bit more processing things will get better too. As for the clipping, i will have to try to reduce the gain a bit more and see what happens. Yea to be honest, my first thought when i heard the audio quality was that there is something wrong with my unit, but then i watched some other videos on the mic and saw that many people had similar sound issues. I even found an official dji video about the mic, where some official from dji was talking about the then new firmware update and the video is clipping all the time. I can’t believe someone at dji approved that. The ipad issue is actually going to be a problem in one year once apple is going to release Usbc iPhones. I hope they can address that with a software update. It would be a shame if new iPhones wouldnt work with the dji mic anymore. Let’s hope for the best and do some more testing. Im going to watch some more of your videos. I assume your newer videos are all shot with the dji mic?

@tricks-and-tips Жыл бұрын
This is fortunately a very common thing in the audio recording world. No mic can handle the wide dynamic range of the real world and produce a 'balanced' recording without post processing. You need specific software (or hardware) for that. Just like no camera sensor in the world can capture the high dynamic range that nature can throw at us. So a good mic will have the ability to record the loudest sound without distorting and the quiet sounds without too much noise. That way you can compress the wav file later to get a more 'equal / balanced' end result. Something to consider is that the DJI Mic (recorder) does not have a foam cover. So certain sounds from your voice will come in very loud. (lots of air moving) These are mainly the 'T' and the 'S', since they produce the biggest movements in air. We always use a foam cover on our mics and (on condensator mics) a windscreen. (not that fluffy thing, but a mesh that stops these hard airflows) But that is in a recording studio environment. To wrap this up, what you can do is find the right distance between you and the mic. The further away, the less clipping you will get, but you will also pick up more background noise. Also play with the gain (as you already did), lowering it so you don't get popping / clipping. So I would always try to keep it as close as you can to your mouth and lower the gain until it does not clip. Don't use auto gain, not in the DJI Mic NOR in the camera. You better do this in your editor. (compression with makeup gain) In fact, I would not use the camera input at all, these cheap pre amps are another factor that can cause problems. Use the onboard sound only in the Mic or the Receiver and sync them in post (takes 5 seconds if you make sure you have some hard transient like 2 claps or anything in the recording). You can invest in a lavalier mic with a foam cover, which will dampen the T and S air flow a bit (less clipping). This will also help getting the mic closer to your mouth (which, in theory, should give better results). Or record with the wind cover on and compensate some of the high frequency loss in your editor. No 'one size fits all' solution and not a 'set and forget' situation , but that is why there still are audio engineers in this world and why their recordings do sound good.

@@mibreit-photo Nice. I'll have a look. How do you feel about the DJI Mic now? Do you get good (enough) quality audio out of it? I'm a bit torn between a good studio mic (SM7B) or a mobile solution. I know both have their place in a setup, but I rather don't spend money on both. I feel most of my recording will be done indoor, but probably not 'at the desk' all the time, hence the interest in a smaller mic solution. Another option for me would be a good lav mic and my Zoom field recorder (with mic input). So I'm taking my time investigating my options here :)

Here's the downside of the DJI Mic, if you're using an iPhone you can only record mono so you can't have separate channels which is a friggin bummer Man... For the love of God please make a lightning adapter that lets you keep the channel stereo on an iPhone. I just ordered a Rode SC15 cable to see if I can use this as a temporary workaround it works with the rode Go II, so when I get it in a couple days I'll test it out and let you know how it works. Again, DJI please develop a new lightning plug so we can have the option of going mono or stereo with an iPhone… I know I can record on each transmitter but it's just that much more work to bring it into the editing system and syncing it up. I'd rather be able just to drop it into the timeline and have separate Mic channels…

I dont film on cell phones that much and I havent tested Stereo on Android, so I dont know if its better than on iPhone. PS: wouldnt it be great if Apple just ditched the proprietary lightning cable and used USB as anybody else. I thought theyd already done that but seems I m wrong ;-)

I just posted a video on my channel that has a solution for recording in stereo on an iPhone with a DJI Mic. After quite an exhausting search, I found one solution.

Given how the Mic's work, you may want to do this -- Record audio to the iPhone using the mics together. I'm assuming at this point that the two channels going into the uPhone audio will be merged into a mono track. Backup record on each mic independently. At the end of the session, pull the video from the iPhone and the two mics into 3 files (1 MP4, 2 WAV). Bring them into your video editor, synch the backup tracks to the video, and you should have "stereo" as in one voice will be in one channel (ear) and the other voice will be in the other channel. remove (or save off) the blended mono channel with the original video and mix the audio as needed.

5:30 "Worstcase" it isn't. Instead most people have different input devices which they use to record video like mobiles, cameras and drones. THATS why you need to adjust the DJI microphone parameters correctly and not fiddle around with camera settings and then switch to another device where these settings are not longer valid. Instead of a little tweak here and a little there get it strait with the DJI microphone as it has the ability to gain DBs as well.

If I sync between multiple devices I use the Backup track which I always record. But nothing wrong, getting it also right in camera in Case I don't synch. I do what works for me and share it. If Most people do it differently I don't care If it doesnt Help in my Workflow.

Don't use autolevels in your camera! This is where the noise came from!

Yes I know, I explain this in the video ;-) And since the gain from the DJI mic is pretty low on default, it has to be raised. In the Canon R5, if I add too much volume there, this adds much noise, so I try to keep it below 50% at least.

I'd be curious to know why you chose the DJI system over the similarly priced (I think) RODE Wireless Go II or a 32 bit floating point model where you don't even have/need a gain control. I have a DJI drone but I regret it now after reading plausible accusations of the company assisting the Russian military in locating Ukrainian drone operators.

To be honest, as a viewer of Thomas Heatons Videos I wasnt so keen on getting the Rode Wireless Microphone. He seems to have to re-record a lot. Also my current Rode Lav Microphone doesnt always work properly. Seems to be Problem with the cable. So I didnt want Rode. The features of the Dji were exactly what I was looking for in an unbeatable form factor, so I bought that one. PS. I dont know how/If Dji is involved in this conflict. If they do that, thats bad, No question
