Well done Ian. As a drone pilot for 6 years, I still appreciate these educational videos. Drone systems change over the years and what may have been true a few years ago on one drone, may not be correct now. An example, the need to discharge the battery every so often to reset the smart battery. I believe this is no longer a DJI requirement.

Ian, not sure if you still monitor this video (2 years ago) but I had this happen to me 2 days ago on a commercial drone job. That's why I searched for this video. My Autel Evo II ran out of battery while on an orthomosaic mission. The drone completely disconnected from the controller, so I had no control whatsoever. But I found the drone in perfect condition in a parking lot. We are so fortunate that these dang things are smarter than we are!! Thanks so much for demonstrating this.

SPASMØDIC Actually, the pickup microphone, even your phone with ear plugs, goes in the center of the bowl. Tape in place and point the open top of the bowl toward your search area. Sweep back and forth for the loudest beeps. The bowl is similar to cupping your hands behind your ears to hear small noises and make your hearing more directional. It works, though putting it on your head might keep you safe from aliens, similar to tinfoil hats???
@SPASMODICIND3 жыл бұрын
@@dennisbrooks240 I cna imagine it works similar to the spy kit type devices they sell for kids. It makes sense as it just like expanding your ears giving a larger surface to catch sound waves. I still like the thought/image of a man with the base of a mixing bowl to the side of his head though 😁 I think practically though, just your phone and earphones could be a phenomanal difference from our own earing, that is defintly a practical solution as you will already have you phone and just need to chuck a pair of earphones into your drone kit 😁

Well done video! Most of us Mavic Mini Operators will at one point in time run into such situation. It happened to me flying in hilly terrain with unexpected much stronger winds at little higher altitudes. I was lucky smart enough to fly with the remaining power to the next best landing site. Out of this acquired experience now, once at 30% power I start thinking about an eventual plan B. In unfamiliar terrain I found to use the map function helpful in order to fly as close as possible to the nearest road.

Hi Ian I’m glad I watched this when you posted it(I obviously didn’t listen to the “don’t push your battery part”or I wouldn’t be writing this now🤔)as I had my Air 2 out yesterday on a 14.7km flight, and managed to land at home with 2% battery remaining.I had cancelled the initial low battery return to home as it was about 40%, and decided to carry on another 1.3km away. When I decided to head back I was 3.8km away on 28% battery. And as I found out it goes down a lot faster than you expect. When the flight remaining time turned red I got the “critical battery aircraft landing in current position“message(but this does not appear on the flight log I have uploaded (so I have a permanent reminder of how stupid I am)for some reason), and it started counting down and started descending on it’s own, this is the important part of your post I did remember, and I put full throttle up and held it and that stopped the descent, but it slowed from 19m/sec to 11m/sec.I came another 1km closer like this until it came up with another power limit message and slowed to 5-6m/sec, but I was closer to home now and managed get it home and hand catch it with 2% battery left🥵 Also there was no beeping or anything from the controller whilst this was going on, but to be fair I’m glad about that because that would not have helped one bit, as I was panicking enough. Anyway sorry about the long winded post. Kind regards Kev

C Kennedy , I often wonder the same thing on videos like this, I think people just have to be negative , some people anyway, but good news is the joke is on them, as hitting dislike has the same effect as hitting like to the KZbin algarythm , it’s a reaction and helps to support the channel in the long run. I found that to be funny when I learned it a while back. It stills doesn’t make sense for someone to hit dislike for a video that is obviously created and uploaded to help people get the most from there drone and help them get it back when something goes wrong, maybe it’s just drone haters in general in this instance though, idk.
@IaninLondon4 жыл бұрын
@@noonespecific9463 You're right; it does all count as interaction; basically when you like a video, YT is more likely to suggest more content from that channel; if you dislike a video, YT reduces and eventually stops suggesting videos from that channel if that person keesp on disliking. Does your reply mean that it will not land on a roof or flat surface even though "saying landing" Unless battery low?... and on low battery will not land on a roof? I also flew over new plants and seeds that my wife and the community volunteer's planted for growing last year and growing well. I got the landing warning there too... Footage looks great, but I got scared when heard the "Landing" Theses were crop looking seeds that grew to about 2 feet high, and my warning on drone said "Landing"
@IaninLondon3 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure why it would say Landing unless you were trying to make it land. Unless you were lowering down on to a flat roof. Then it would see the flat surface and if you kept the left stick down, then yes, it would go into Landing mode and switch off the props once landed. Now, you could start them up again but if it was cooked, say on a stone or uneven surface, the props may not start up again, then you'd be stuck.......

Ian, how do you feel about dust covers? I know they add, aluminum, 3 grams or so of weight. I know it can depend on where you live and if sand or dust is common on landing. My question is will the motors overheat with these caps in place? Any insight? They would also keep moisture out flying in clouds. I flew by clouds as a helicopter pilot, stuck out my hand and felt the warmth before evaporation cooled my hand. Lots of fun. Any way to contact DJI on such questions and to request they call the blade mounting "screws" spindles. Some on KZbin are recommending not changing the "screws", just the blades. Not a good idea in a high grit environment where the fretting of the blades will grind the spindle.

Seeing as DJI refer to the rotors as props (props are vertical, on a plane, rotors are horizontal, like on a helicoptor) I doubt they'll worry about spindles... :) I don't use dust covers; I can't see how you cna stop dust but continue to allow air cooling, which is essential to avoid overheating.... I hand launch and catch if dusty.... Cheers!

Will the Find My Drone feature work if the battery in the drone is completely dead? Your video does not make that clear. Thanks Robert
@IaninLondon Жыл бұрын
Yes, I mentioned it will take you to the last known coordinates of the drone before it lost contact thru dead battery. 👍🏻

so no flashing and beeping in 'find my drone' i imagine, with battery completely dead?

Thanks Ian, you answered my question about whether or not you had any control over the elevation when entering the 1st critical battery warning. I didn't think you did. Of all the critical warnings rapidly occurring, would be nice if that little piece of information was displayed. 🙄 Thanks again!

cool vid cheers, i panicked earlier when it started beeping lol.... only just got my mini 2 :)

It seems very strange to me that the "time remaining" clock would be affected by how far away the Mini is from RTH location. Certainly, from an electrical perspective, this isn't true and I don't see how it helps the pilot anyway.
@IaninLondon4 жыл бұрын
It's like the range estimate on your car; a guess based on how you're flying. If you fly faster, it uses up teh battery faster and so it recalculates; if you fly further way or higher up, it will need more battery to head back and the RTH will kick in earlier, so it's always trying to re-estimate....

I think what Ian's trying to say is that the "Time remaining" is an estimate of the time you have left to use the drone, for whatever propose, before it needs to return home. Not the actual time it will take for the battery to be critically exhausted. this is useful for most people because you don't have to try and work out how long you need to allow for returning home. they've done that thinking for you.

Yes I had the critical battery issue a couple of weeks ago with my pro. I was over corn fields as well but to cut a long story short; because of the auto landing and the fact I always land by hand the drones props took a decent go at my finger and I'm not exaggerating there was blood all over the side of my drone! Ian what is it you do in London for work may I ask?
@IaninLondon4 жыл бұрын
Aha, the hand catch can sting if you don't do it right. And the Pro has strong props.... :) I am a suit in the city (or was, until lockdown happened) as business analyst for one of the large banks. But lockdown means working from home for the foreseeable future which is handy for making videos out of your back garden :) Cheers, Ian

3:00 I don’t understand why it would determine the remaining flight time based off the distance from the Home point how would that affect it?
@IaninLondon4 жыл бұрын
The estimated remaining time is like your car's fuel range estimate. It's always recalculating based on how fast you've been flying and if you're far away from the home point, it knows the RTH will take far longer. Also if you're flying at high altitude it knows it has a lot of decent to consider too.

The video described it wrong. That number indicates how much time you have until you battery is at 0% based on what you are doing at that exact moment. For example, if you are hovering in place and the number says 5 minutes, it will die in 5 minutes, not return home.
