I recently decided to switch my GoPro 7 with DJI Osmo Action 4. In this video, I will play you footage that I filmed with the new camera and microphone setup. l will also show you how I mounted them on the helmet.
Welcome back, this is a tech video. I am not going to dive deep into the specifications of the camera! You can find hundreds of videos like this on KZbin. Here now, I will share my opinion, based on my experience, regarding my needs.
As you know I film my trips and for me, the top priorities are easy to use and reliability. I can close my eyes to some downsides if these two are met.
This is going to be a long video, I tried to make it short, but it is just impossible. There are so many details that I wanted to show you and I cannot make it faster.

Osmo Action 4 on the latest firmware supports wireless connection of the DJI Mic2 microphone. This is an excellent way to have a waterproof helmet camera while recording audio at the same time. The lavalier microphone can also be connected to a wireless microphone. And on top of that, the microphone itself can separately store sound recordings as a backup copy. Regarding the reported problem with the operating time, the DJI Mic2 promises 14 hours of recording and can still be charged while in use. Perhaps this will be the most interesting option for installing a microphone system. It’s better to record the video itself for KZbin in 4k50(60). 1080 along with KZbin compression looks very bad, especially in those places where there are a lot of small parts, twigs, grass, everything crumbles and it turns out to be a mess

This video hits home, currently have two GoPro 7 Black and 3 USB mic adapters. I'll keep running the GoPros for now, but I'm happy to learn they are very good alternatives, I have a GoPro 11 Black as well, but I only use it for garage videos/projects, it was not reliable for motovlogging/long term recording.

I have the same camera and use a USB-C to TTRS adaptor. The one I got is the "Movo" UCMA-3 with 90' bend on the USB C side and plugs directly into my Purple Panda lav mic in the helmet cheek pad. Very neat, does not interfer with anything and takes up no space...but not water proof, thats the only down side. Great video as always Pavlin...

Unfortunately to use the DJI effectively on the helmet, as you did, I would need to also purchase the Telesin cage and the 90 degree mic adaptor (that mic sticking out is waiting to be broken off as you mention). Hi Pavlin. If you search in electronics shops in Bulgaria, you will find 90 deg angled microphone plugs. Then you can cut the microphone wires and attach the new plug. If you are not good with thin wires and soldering irons, I am sure you will find a friend to do the connection for you. Wish you all the best from Greece.

Sound on the rhode lav is muffled. I would suggest a 90 deg 12"extension to glue into the helmet and then plug the mic inside the helmet. Also move the mic away from your mouth to some place in the padding witth a smaller muff. It takes a while to find the best spot with some ideas on youtube.

Great information. The technology now days is fantastic and absolutely critical for a KZbin channel. I have a story and wonder if anyone feels the same way. Back when cameras used something called Film, I had all the gadgets --- lenses, filters, enlargers, toxic chemicals. However, the only way I could recall my vacations was to look at my pictures. Photography took up all of the time. As digital photography took over, I gradually lost interest in taking pictures. Now I rarely take a camera on my travels, and the level of enjoyment I experience is much higher. The only technology I carry now is a cellphone and Garmin InReach Mini. No cameras, no drones, just me and the landscape. Happy travels, Jim in Oregon, USA

Overall great setup and good camera choice. DJI Action 4 proves itself better than GoPro according to many reviews online. For the microphone, you can replace the straight connector with a 90 degree one which will stay out of the way a little. Also there are some aftermarket USB-C microphones which are compatible with DJI Action 3 and 4. These should work directly via USB-C without the need for an adapter.

I had a GoPro 10 and had the usual problems with it, video freezing up, over heating and shutting off, poor battery life, batteries swelling up and a mount snapping at 100klms/hr (which resulted in the GoPro bouncing down the road and disappearing for ever into the bush). Bought a DJI action 4 a couple of months ago after watching many comparison vloggs and have had no problems with it whatsoever. It is also much easier to navigate all the settings as compared to GoPro. You may have already researched this but you can buy a remote on/off switch that straps to your handlebars and or your wrist,making it a lot easier to operate! Cheers from Australia

A small tip for improving video quality of your videos is adding a ND filter to your camera. It will make the videos more smoother because the ND filter adds a bit of motion blur to your footage. Also helps with overexposure in super bright environments.ND filters are easier to attach to the Osmo vs the GoPro. The ND filter also ads a layer of physical protection from impacts to the main lens.
@motorcycleadventures

They helps when you film in control light, not when you travel and the weather change every 15 minutes.
@jolebole-yt
@jolebole-yt 29 күн бұрын
The ND filters are not gonna be such a big impact. If you keep everything on auto the worse that can happen is the footage might looks a bit darker then in reality depending on what filter you use. Also your sunsets are going to look much better 😁

Hi Pavlin. Thanks for sharing your setup. I have been using GoPros for some time and one of the downside for me is the short battery life when recording in 4k or even in 1080p. Also the GoPro batteries tend to swell up even if you don’t use them overtime which makes them difficult to remove from the camera. I notice that you recorded in 1080p with the Osmo and the footage was not that sharp in the low light areas of your drive. It would be nice if you can record some footage in 4k and report hows the battery life. Thanks.

For my use it is enough. If you would have had a hero 11 or 12 the decision would not be so easy. @@motorcycleadventures So for 60P, it records 60 frame per second, means that it take 10 more frames than the 50P, that's why the file becomes larger than the 50P files. It's normal that the 50p video is less smooth than the 60p files. If you don't need to consider the file size, 60p is recommended for better quality and smoothness

I am playing right now with the gps remote and the wireless mic2. Since I am recording for myself, the mic will be in the tank bag for engine noise. The remote is great, can be easily velcroed to the handle bar or the mirror stem (it has 2 velcro straps in the box, one long and one short) and it shows the status of the camera (sleep/recording). It has a small battery true, but in a 10 minute break it charges at least half. Downside is that after 30 minutes of sleep (the state where you use snapshot to start recording), the camera shuts down completely so it disconnects from the remote and you need to start the camera manually to establish a connection again. The mic is problematic, every time the camera goes into sleep mode, it disconnects and when you use the snapshot function to start recording, it reconnects to the camera anywhere from instant to even 14 seconds, which sucks. In short, if DJI makes it so the remote and the mic remain constantly connected even when the camera sleeps, even if it consumes a bit more battery and they allow to disable the GPS function on the remote, to save battery (who records GPS data in the video anyway ... ) this could be a great combination. And PLS PLS PLS record in 4 k ... it's a shame to not use the camera at its full potential :)

A bit „whashy“ video quality on the sides, often in the middle, too, in the forest. Basically almost as good as your Old GoPro, almost, in low-light. Audio is ok, a bit muddy, but I think that‘s because of all the necessary damping foams and helmet placement, that‘s needed. Not really different than before. Windnoise can become an issue, almost went beyond acceptable level on your nice forest back road. Stabilization is fine. I suggest you try an 90° angled microphone plug. That way it doesn‘t stick out so far and you can switch the camera on/off with your left hand. Ah, you‘ve done it. Ah, nooo, pls. Really? You use an adaptor to connect two connectors? Pls. get it to a fine electrician and solder the cable to a 90° connector please, it‘s long enough to cut it and do it properly.

I'm one of those who change bikes almost every season. I like to try different bikes. But now I think I will try to settle down and keep my latest purchase next few years. DJI cameras are more appealing to me than GoPro, because they are bit cheaper and I think that Gopro microphone adapter is hideous brain fart and overpriced. Many people also complain about freezing and other issues with them. Probably going to buy DJI Osmo action 3 or 4 soon.

I use external power for my GoPros. The external power gives my GoPro 10 hours of record time and they don't or heat.

I also got a Osmo 4 and whith your setup i did not think the microphone sound was so good actually it was "overmodulated" and that is because you have the microphone right in front of you mouth you should have it way from direct in front of you mouth i have the microphone on the right side almost under the side protection in the helmet then the sound is perfeckt even if you screem or talk high, and almost no wind noice even in 150 km/h also the microphon i use is a sheap one from Ebay who cost 4 dollar and it have a perfect sound.

mmm Pavlin Your comparison should have changed screens? Isn't it? In the same shooting conditions, in the same situation, same lighting conditions, same landscape photography, shoot with both cameras at the same time OLD Vs NEW, and change screens at the editing. I got the impression, and maybe it's wrong, that the performance level of the new camera drops compared to your old GoPro 7. It's a matter of depth of field (a less sensitive CCD detector requires a wider aperture), it's a matter of color separation (lens quality, but also the quality of the CCD detector), and it's a matter of exposure speed (smearing of the landscape that passes quickly at the edges of the screen). This is not an easy decision.

You missed the whole point of the video! As I said I am not a tech channel and this is not a comparison video. It is to show you the current setup. Thanks for taking the time, anyway!

@@motorcycleadventures OK You are right, as always. For yours advice channel, as the advice for the new camera, and setup, it came out understandable and clear. Then you go out for a series of outdoor shots, and inspect the technical view of the on/off button, and the matter of the connector, THEN you refer to the quality of the image. Am I'm wrong? Pvlin, recently you separated your content into two channels, in the travel channel, if the quality is less good, it's going to be negatively subject. Isn't it? You are currently not before another trip, the landscape shots on your old GoPro are of a very high standard, so I thought, all the advantages of the new camera are clear, OK all the advantages, BUT... and that's why I'm sharing. But maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for all you do and share on your channel. Great channel.

As I said in the video, it is hard for me to believe that the new DJI will have worse video quality than the old GoPro. Don't forget that video quality depend on the moment conditions. The footage that you think is better, might been shot in better lightening. There are hundreds of videos on KZbin that compare it with GoPro 12 one next to another and you cannot see much of a difference.

@@motorcycleadventures The discussion is for a good purpose. You claim that the new camera is no worse. I'm used to seeing your quality, compared to your video, there is a difference for the worse and it's a noticeable difference. This is noticeable in the viewing experience when you photograph a landscape, and especially a landscape in motion, and I explained in professional terms (lens quality, color separation quality, exposure speed, etc...). I do not refer to the claims of different marketers. I refer to my knowledge and experience in photography. For taking shots in the studio, the change as you claim does not exist, and I said it is not relevant (even if there is a decrease in quality), it does not interfere with the experience in the studio. In landscape photography, during trips, your demonstration proved that there is a difference. You explain that it is related to the intensity of the light, correct? In the light before sunset and after sunrise the colors are better, but the quality is measured not only in colors. A viewing experience is very important for the travel channel.

You can stop the camera with voice commands - "stop recording" and "shut down" as well as "start recording" and "take photo".

I had the same issues with my GoPro 9 & 10. Moved to DJI Osmo Action 4, and will NOT be going back to GoPro. The amount of footage I lost on some decent trips is not funny.

Had a bloke I knew break his neck due to his helmet cam digging in and twisting his neck. He is now in a wheelchair. Apparently something similar happened to M.Schumacker, but don't know if that is true. Bottom line is helmet cams are dangerous, noisy and make you look like tit.

There are simpler set with sound and charging at the same time on action cameras with usb C port. Just need splitter (usb C male 90 ° to mini jack 3.5 mm/usb C female). When I film while driving the motorcycle I always connect the camera to the motorcycle USB port with a spiral cable. 🫡👍
