Hello Tom, want to add (correct) a couple of points in your video. Speaking as a long time working filmmaker it is not a good idea to leave the camera in Auto White Balance. The user should either set it to the appropriate lighting condition (sunny, cloudy etc) or set a manual white balance, this prevents headaches later in post in colour correction. Unless you're shooting entirely the Phantom, filmmakers will usually use more than one camera (which will be set to 1 region mostly). Leaving the camera in NTSC does NOT help PAL timelines.. As you will mix frame rates. Though this can be done (e.g in FCPX) it does alter playback speed of the video.... This is not good practice unless it's deliberate.
@TomsTechTime8 жыл бұрын
+FCPWHAT As mentioned before: I always use the AWB with the Phantom series and never had any problems. And don't tell me I'm not experienced enough. Next to that I'm using several Canon DSLRs, a Panasonic MFT camera and a Blackmagic Production Camera. Even though I'm in a PAL country, I have them all set to NTSC with 29.976fps. I film everything with either 24fps (cinelike productions) or 30fps (everything else). At the ground, when filming in NTSC, I use safe shutter speeds and know my gear very well and know how to avoid flickering. I do not present any official rules, I talk about my personal favorite settings. And yes, they work. And no, most users like to capture aerials only, while only some combine them with normal camera shots.
@DirkGently19728 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, DO NOT use NTSC 30fps in European regions if you intend to share your content on commercial TVs over HDMI. For Europe/Australia and much of South East Asia stick with either PAL 24fps or 25fps. The 24fps frame rate is what you would expect in a typical movie theatre, whereas the 25fps is what you would actually get on your broadcast television channel (I.e. 25fps Progressive of 50Hz Interlaced). In PAL regions, simply stick with 24/25 fps :)

If you use auto balance you don't know anything about video... it makes no sense if you shoot in Log and then use AW... realy, you are telling a lot of things that are wrong...
@esgee38298 жыл бұрын
Try panning to/from the sun with Auto WB and see what happens. Also, try capturing fireworks at night with auto WB. You'll have wasted your time if cinematography is important to you as you'll have images where color temp and tint will be changing throughout your clip. So, if and only if lighting is relatively constant throughout your clip should you consider Auto WB if cinematography is important to you.

What is mode 4:2:0 or 4:0:0 for UHD and FullHD? What is 8-bit or 10-bit color?
@UrbexWonderland8 жыл бұрын
As a cinematographer looking to buy a Phantom 4, the first thing that hit me is why you would suggest to set the camera to NTSC and 30fps. That is very misleading as not everyone will want to shoot at that frame rate and it will be dependent on the project and possibly inter-cutting other camera footage with the Phantom footage. For instance I have shot some material on my Sony XDCAM in 25fps, I would also shoot the Phantom material in 25fps. Also shooting in NTSC mode in a European country may mean you may get a flickering / strobing effect on street lamps, traffic lights etc. This is due to the frequency of the oscillations of alternating current (AC) in an electric power grid. its 50hz for Europe and 60hz for the US and some other regions. You should amend your description to take these factors into account. Color setting will depend on how much post production work the footage will go through. D-LOG is great for those looking to bring their own look to the footage in the way of color grading. For a finished look which needs no post production, you would choose one of the other modes.

if you know everything about this stuff: Can you make a video about it? I did read thousand different things about fps and all that stuff..
@al35mm8 жыл бұрын
+Arkitekture Yes I agree with you there. 24FPS is more cinematic too. TBH I don't think Tom really knows a great deal what he is talking about here. His advice about leaving WB on auto was a big negative for me - set WB to the conditions and then it is fixed. There's nothing worse than watching footage taken on a camera set to auto, hunting about and switching setting half way through a shot. Even worse trying to edit such footage. Set it and stick with it. If the light changes while filming, fix it in post. In fact, post is everything now days - use the camera to catch the light, then do the film work in post, and providing you got things pretty spot on while shooting, you should be able to make everything good in the final - but not if it was set to auto, and was constantly changing!

I personally love the zebra stripes. Yes, the histogram shows you if you are over exposed but it does not show you what part of the image is blown out like the zebra stripes does. Sometimes its okay to overexpose something that you don't need detail in, like the sun. And exposing for zebras is like exposing to the right of the histogram which we know gives us more detail in the shadows.
@TomsTechTime8 жыл бұрын
+Jonas Hesselmark Use whatever you like better. If the zebra works best for you: use it. I'm using the Histogram. Others might not like both of them. It depends on your personal preferences. Stay tuned and thanks for the feedback!

Hi Jonas! I fully agree with you regarding the use of zebra stripes. I wrote a post on Phantom pilots yesterday March 15, 2017. After a day has not commented on this post. I see that both zebra stripes and historgram discussed some general. Now I have sent a mail to DJI headquarter, so maybe one day there is an improvement. Are you from Sweden? Auto White Balance can cause the color temperature to change through the video recording. For example, if viewing a sunny area and then rotating to view a cloudy or shaded area. Setting the White Balance to a fixed setting such as Sunny or Custom will guarantee that the WB does not drift or change throughout a recording.
@Benidron8 жыл бұрын
+Logan Boyd it is the other way around, if you set white balance to Sunny, if you rotate to shadows, everything will look blueish, and no solution for that at all. Leaving it automatically, It will change increasing the kelvin degress, filming your footage much closer to real scene.

-2 on the contrast while in D-log is actually a bad idea, as I found out today. D-Log already maxes out the dynamic range on the sensor, and lowering the contrast will only pull whites down to a light grey, and will pull blacks up to a dark grey. Try it out for yourself. Point the camera at the sun, and switch between 0, -1, and -2 while in D-Log. The sun should be complete white, and you'll see the top of the histogram get pulled down, thus lowing dynamic range.

I am sorry, but the recommendation to shoot D-Log is just misleading... People recommend using LOG profiles without understanding fully how they work or, as it is the case with Phantom, how they DON'T work. First of all, let me start by saying: DJI's D-Log is not a true Log profile despite it's name. It may look like it, but it isn't. It is basically a simulation of how Log profiles look. Log profiles offer more dynamic range, but in case of Phantom camera it does not, it just artificially lowers the contrast during the processing, which does nothing but breaks zebras (overexposure indication): you may have highlights completely burnt but it will almost never show that with zebra on the screen. You will get the same by taking any other profile and lowering the contrast and saturation in post - it's exactly that. Secondly, even if it was a true Log profile and if it offered wider dynamic range, you would need at least a 4:2:2 codec to get any kind of benefit out of it. Phantom uses low-bitrate (60Mb/s) 4:2:0 8bit codec, which is not suited for shooting Log. You will lose a ton of detail and get banding in smooth gradients, because there is just not enough data out there to grade Log efficiently. So, basically, by shooting Log with Phantom you only degrade the quality of your video without reaping any kind of benefit whatsoever. I would strongly suggest doing some research before shooting it or recommending others to do that, because right now it just feels as if people see "Log" in settings and go immediately "Oh, pro's shoot Log, so I have to do it too!" Shoot None - it's the most neutral profile in this case.

Did you mention that if you use D-Log, you can apply a LUT in post and instantly have a gorgeous look to your movie. I would also mention (as some others have) that leaving white balance on Auto can cause all sorts of problems with the P4 changing settings by itself. You really want to set that to custom. I also like the zebra stripes so I can see what's lost in the highlights. Thanks.
@aaronboyer8837 жыл бұрын
what do you mean by applying a LUT afterwards?
@meteoroz7 жыл бұрын
If you use D-Log, you get a really flat looking video with a lot of room for colour correction. In a program like Final Cut Pro using a variety of utilities you can apply what's called a LUT or Look Up Table which remaps the colours correctly while keeping all the detail. You can download DJI specific LUTs from their website. They usually have an extension of .CUBE

Hi Tom! First off, awesome video! Second off, I'm curious, how do you find the compression and aliasing of the camera on the Phantom 4? I'm coming from a phantom 2 and GoPro Hero Black 4, and the Hero Black 4 at 4k looks AMAZING. No aliasing, really good compression to my eye, etc. Now I've also bought a Phantom 4 for stability reasons and for the intelligent modes, and I must say I'm quite disappointed with the aliasing/moire/compression of the Phantom 4 camera. I have everything set like you say, and I find things like trees to be a bit too soft and muddy, so when I go to add sharpening in Premiere it looks even worse. I wanted to get your opinion on all this, and any advice you may have for sharpening images in post. Thanks!
@Filmersblog8 жыл бұрын
I have the same experience as you do. After shooting some 6 occasions since I bought the Phantom 4 2 weeks ago and the initial excitement wore off, I started becoming more critical and noticed quite some artefacts. Most notably the tree-leaves look like mush (instead of crisp green leaves the trees grow seaweed...)and I was getting some serious purple and green fringing (chromatic aberration) at the beach the other day. I'm afraid we have to learn to live with it until the next Phantom -or competitor- arrives on the scene... Or buy a more expensive model and be able to put different lenses on the drone. Although this guy from Neumann films did some tests with the Phantom 4 and found it was hardly a difference from the Zenmuse X5...
@DJWeekly8 жыл бұрын
+Filmersblog it's true. I used the x5 recently and it looks the same, compression-wise. Pretty disappointing. Perhaps the x5r is better (I would hope so!) but I don't have $6,000 right now for the basic package. So yes we'll have to just wait and hope that DJI figures this out, or something better comes along. :/ For now, I've had to change how I shoot to make the Phantom 4 look good. I shoot closer to things now, or make sure there is something of interest in the foreground close to camera (between 6' and 20') instead of just shooting only trees from a very high distance. It's the only way I've found to be semi-happy with my p4 footage.
@Filmersblog8 жыл бұрын
What about chromatic aberration- have you seen a lot of that with your Phantom? I never noticed it until my beach-shoot a few days ago. Flying low over the waves, the surf turns purple/magenta at times- really visible. And shooting from up high along the beach pointed semi-downward, I was following one of those little carts with sails on them and I noticed the sand was showing slight green and magenta tints. It was partly cloudy and the light on the beach was changing from sunny to overcast in the same shot. Maybe that did it. Plus the fact that I was shooting in auto WB probably didn't help much...

+natserog The are two settings on the Phantom 4 that allow you to shoot in 4K. The first of which is UHD 4096x2160 which gives you the wider aspect ratio but only allows 24 and 25fps. I just updated new DJI GO app April 13, 2016. I thought when I did that all custom settings would be lost. It looks like some where saved? is that something new? thanks!!

I upgraded the firmware to P4 drone then New Update for Remote. Restarted all, the drone flys and watching on my screen and then after 30 seconds it goes back to Main Menu Phantom 4 white screen and I have to hit camera again. Then it works and goes back to main menu Phantom 4. Do you have any ideas what the Updates did wrong, or do I have to change any settings. Your help will be so helpful. Hope you understand.

Ok, I'm exhausted for shoveling snow off of our 360ft drive way so bear with me. I would like to know IF/HOW to change Video Settings to allow One Video File Per Flight. I keep getting Two Video files about 9:15 minutes in then it starts a new file on micro SD card. I know I can just drop them in the timeline on Cyberlink PD software but just seeing if there can be juts one video file per flight/landing/shutoff? Thanks
