I remember this series very fondly, especially as a huge Mario fan myself. Now, this series definitely doesn't peak to the likes of the classic 2D entries (especially Super Mario World, in my opinion) and I do think it's a tad "stale" nowadays, but I still greatly enjoyed it for being simple "pick up and play" games that was rarely the case for some of the other 2D sidescrollers and even then, this series did introduce one of my absolute favorite power ups in the franchise: Gold Flower.

This has to be the definitive retrospective on these games, well done. The first 2 are best sellers and totally deserve their sucess imo. Let's not forget that back when the DS one first dropped, it indeed had the novelty of a 2D Mario platformer with a 3D aesthetic, as after the 3D games and various spinoffs I always wanted to see something like that. And kudos for endorsing Yoshi's Island as a mainline Mario platformer at the start. The Gigaleak straight up confirmed it was titled "Super Mario Bros 5" during development. And the GBA did technically get an original Mario platformer... sort of. The port of SMB 3 (Mario Advance 4) has e-reader support, which inlcudes 33 brand new unlockable levels, plus 5 recreated SMB1 stages, in a game mode called World e. Said original SMB1 has 32 levels so this counts as a full game I guess. Anyway, since the e-reader didn't catch on overall, the feature was scrapped in Europe and only 1/3d of the level cards came out in North America (11 out of the 33 new ones and 1 out of the 5 SMB1 ones. Japan did get all the levels). And the ROM even has evidence that more stages were planned at some point, based on found unused data. Fortunately, all of the 38 e-reader exclusive levels have since been added to the port in future rereleases, such as the Wii U VC and more recently in the GBA's NSO service. So with the latter, one can now experience the "real" Lost Levels of 2D Mario history.

I think the Wii installment was my first taste of that series? it was fun to see mario back in 2D, I mean I liked the 3D games but having started with the original the 2D stuff was more my jam. I'll definitely concede that the sequels didn't do too much to mix up the formula, so I'm definitely happy that they're mixing it up a little more with SMB Wonder coming this year, it really looks to shake up the NSMB formula and add a lot more new stuff. another fantastic entry in the 'complete history' series!!

First, thank you for making this fantastic retrospective video. As someone around the same age as yourself, I am incredibly happy to hear an opinion being voiced that doesn't criticize the "New Super Mario Bros." series into the ground. 99% of people I hear talk about the series have nothing but disparaging things to say about it and I find it endlessly tiresome. I am a 2D Mario addict with over 4,250 hours (you read that correctly. NOT a typo) in Mario Maker 2. Easily, my favourite mode in that game is "New Super Mario Bros. U". I play those levels before any of the other modes. It is about the physics. Simply put, the movement physics of Mario in the "New Super Mario Bros. U" game mode are the most perfect in the entire series. I like them much better than even the beloved "Super Mario World" physics or the "Super Mario 3" physics. For me, it is gaming perfection. As for the series of 5 games brandished with the "New" moniker, I 100% agree with you that "New Super Luigi Bros. U" is the best of the best. Luigi's physics are even better than Mario's and the game is sheer bliss in my eyes. I will disagree on one point however... I personally find "New Super Luigi Bros. U" to be EASIER than "New Super Mario Bros. U" or actually all of the other games in the series, including the Golden Coin one. Maybe it is because I 100% every game I play. I find getting all the Star Coins and Secret Exits in "New Super Luigi Bros. U" easier than the other games, because the levels are short enough that I can often just power through and take damage using my 2 hit points from the squirrel suit and still get to the flag. It is wonderful, honestly. I also disagree about the Acorn Power-Up. I LOVE it! It is easily my favourite power-up in any Mario game. It is so useful when trying to get up to a high ledge or fly over annoying enemies. I am a squirrel suit expert and it makes the levels a lot of fun. I like it a lot more than the propeller because of the gliding. While the propeller can help you reach high ledges, it is useless for flying distances and avoiding enemies. I also like it better than the Tanooki suit, which is more similar to the acorn, but I find less useful. I know you'll disagree, but for me the "New Super Mario Bros." series got BETTER with every entry. "New Super Mario Bros. U" is my second favourite and "New Super Mario Bros. 2" is my third. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I see each game as a refinement on the previous entry. That doesn't mean I don't love the first game or the Wii entry, but I do feel like the games just kept getting better and better as they further refined the physics and game play. Where other people see the same game over and over again, I see the superb little adjustments each game had over its predecessor. I am excited for "Super Mario Bros. Wonder", but I have to admit I am more than a little disappointed to never get another "New Super Mario Bros." game. For me the physics and art-style were perfection. I am sure Wonder will be a great Mario game, but I don't see it beating out "New Super Luigi Bros. U" or "New Super Mario Bros. U" in terms of sheer awesomeness for me. It is just like how I feel about the 2D 3D World mode in "Super Mario Maker 2". It is good. It is fun. It doesn't touch how great the "New Super Mario Bros. U" physics and art style are. Also, just a small correction about the description of "New Super Luigi Bros. U": The Boss Fights and Over-world Map are identical to "New Super Mario Bros. U", but all of the levels are completely new. They do incorporate the same themes as the "New Super Mario Bros. U" levels in the same map locations, but the levels aren't just redesigns, they are built from the ground up NEW levels that incorporate the same assets. They are brilliant, in my opinion. Thanks again and I am sorry for writing such a long reply. Keep up the great work!
@slopesgameroom Жыл бұрын

@@slopesgameroom That's exactly what I've just been doing! I usually play the game on my Wii U because they forgot to map the twirl and acorn boost to L for the Switch port (it is mapped to R and ZR only) and I exclusively use the "claw" grip when playing 2D Mario. I hold run all the time and twirl/boost with my left index finger. I now have a controller I like that I can map buttons to, so I just switched L & ZL with R & ZR. I am on my way to 100% the game on Switch now after having played all this time on the Wii U. I have been loving the games as much as ever. The Luigi levels continue to be some of the most fun I have ever had in Mario.

19:54 To date I still think SMG2 is the best super mario game so far. Surpassing even Super Mario Bros 3. I did enjoy Odyssey a lot, though. And yes, I loved the first New Super Mario Bros. the best. Even today, without the "finally! we're playing a brand new Mario platformer" hype; the amazing music, the fun mechanics like rotating rooms and mini mushroom puzzles, and the cool, original bosses are still engraved in my mind and I look back at it with a smile. 31:10 Ring Fit did THAT well? LET'S GOOOO! I'm sad I just finished Story mode and its two Extra modes. 32:15 I loved that gesture you did, pretty much what I feel using those terms. Really, we should use the word new only when referring to the real meaning of the word - while "new", in quotations, when talking about the Mario series named that. I know this is for the funny content, but I mean for normal conversations... or just call it Old or Newish. =P Thanks for another magnificent episode! I love that even in a series I know just well, I still learned about a new game: That slot machine one. Seriously, thanks a lot for making this series.

Wow the timing of this upload is impeccable because I just started playing the first one again for the first time on hardware in a good decade. I do agree that all the entries are **technically** good but I'm still pretty firm on my stance that the first two are really all you need. There's no entry before NSMBDS that was like NSMBDS and NSMBWII added absolute loads to the first game's formula as well as having introducing incredibly fun controls my simply just waggling and tilting the Wiimote. The other 2 are paid DLC at best, so I can't blame anyone for talking shit after Wonder shows up and shows actual effort put in compared to previous 2d entries.

Just to give you some perspective Mr DJ Slope (by the way, I love your channel and watch/replay a lot of your content as well as your buddy Larry Bundy Jr... wish he'd come back and make content again...) while the "New" in "New Super Mario Bros" does sound odd to us in the West, there's a logical explanation to why Hiroyuki Kimura ran with it as the title. In Japanese, you always put the "most important parts" or "focus" of the sentence at the beginning. As you stated here 9:08 he felt it was the perfect time, with a new system to introduce the "New" entry. Announcing to their largest install base (Japan) NEW Super Mario Bros is essentially using a catch phase informing the consumer "This is new, you should buy it" in Japan. And hey, even 17 years later, the "stupidness" of the name still makes people talk about it so... you can't say it didn't work lol.

I don't exactly get the ignorance that New Super Mario Bros. as a series was ever seen as bad, I thought it was just going to be a throwaway thing in your video but I do feel like it gets brought up so many times in too short of a time and even telling the viewers "stop hating this game" when I don't ever think hate was ever a useful word to describe why this series had so much distaste. It's also just ignorant and confusing to be already using these words with the original DS game, the one that was always referred to as a well-beloved and well respected Mario platformer at the time and even to this day I think it still holds a place in everyone who grew up playing it. TL;DR There wasn't really hate so much as tiredness over the "New" games becoming too mainstay in the series and not enough innovation for each entry. Keep in mind this is NINTENDO we're talking about here so it just feels really weird how future entries in the "New" series harkened back so much to past titles and reiterating on what already exists without so much as changing the art style or adding new playable characters or giving Mario new wacky abilities. It made each future entry really hard to stand out and you notice this even more when you look at U and 2 which not only released on the same exact year but were borderline the same as their prior game console entries with ham-fisted new mechanics and ideas that feel like would've been cooler had they had a higher presence. Mario as a franchise was always about innovation, and making each new experience and game feel totally new and fresh. No two games played too alike one another. So it wasn't common to see Nintendo do this to their star franchise, and again it just didn't *feel* like them at all. It created a rather stagnant and unmoving series for a few years given the 3D entries weren't exactly being released on a regular basis either (over the lifespan of the New series existing we go from Galaxy to Galaxy 2 more or less before getting new 3D entries and as well with Super Mario Maker on top of the soon-to-be Super Mario Bros. Wonder). Still, New Super Mario Bros. was an outstanding entry and was always a game I think was worth going back to as I feel like it also just had the most vibrant and charming aesthetic to it. Something that, again, felt rather stagnant in future entries as they repeated level aesthetics and creating music compositions that felt weaker and less extravagant (or, once again, too derivative of previous entries).
@darinherrick9224 Жыл бұрын
The reason I've never gotten into the Mario series is difficulty. I used to think it's me, but New Super Mario on Wii? NO ONE of the four players could get past the second world. It's just too hard. I'm stuck on the second world of Mario 3 as well. These Mario games are just too hard.
@NateRD90 Жыл бұрын
Nintendo's biggest mistake was not packaging all 4 games together, with all modes and DLC in one game on the Switch, and adding multiplayer for NSMB1 and 2, and instead doing a lazy and inferior port of the Wii U entry.

The Gameboy Color is not incorrectly spelled, they spelled the word like that because it was aimed at the USA market above the UK. Also the 'u' doesn't make any sense to squish in, neither does the letter c belong, words in English would be more logical if they used correct sounds of letters, for example you wouldn't spell letters as 'leccers' so why not spell color as 'kolor'? English spelling and grammar could have been much more accurate than it is, like the word spelling should be replaced by 'wording'.

I would like to share something I think is very exciting and interesting if anyone gladly and respectfully accepts. Sorry, but thinking about Mario like this also has me thinking about one of my biggest wishes.

@@slopesgameroom All right, sure. So something I think is very exciting and interesting is new Mario characters. I really wish there were some. New characters I wish were no longer imaginary and were in the Mario series are powerful mages, named Kiemonte, Sunari, Neyla, Xavior, Gerodi, and Jalrez.

@@slopesgameroom Kiemonte is the mage leader and ruler of a mysterious land distant from the Mushroom Kingdom. He is wise, mature, and kind and cares deeply about the land and the other, fellow mages. He is the new tallest even surpassing Waluigi, Pauline, and Rosalina's heights. I used to imagine Kiemonte being like a male version of Rosalina.

@@slopesgameroom Sunari is the dancing mage, assistant of Kiemonte, and fraternal twin sister of Neyla. Sunari is kind and friendly with an eager demeanor. She does her best using her powers to help those in need.

@@slopesgameroom Neyla is Kiemonte's other mage assistant and the slightly younger sister of Sunari. Neyla is also the mind mage with an eager demeanor. As one of the mage residents of the land, she helps them with the use of her powers.

The "New" mario games are far worse than the "3D Land/World" and 3D games (64, sunshine, galaxy 1&2, odyssey) the only mario game I've ever hated was NSMBU Deluxe

Ugh, that woman who clearly has never played a video game in her life presenting Mario Bros Wii is so cringey. What was Nintendo thinking???
