This person must still be fairly young. All we can really do is hope that they eventually realize that what they're doing is wrong and isn't going to help them at all in the long run. They just seem to be in that "I want to draw and I want to be good at it *right now*" phase. I remember being in a similar situation when I was young, I saw all these amazing artists on DeviantArt and thought "I want to be like them", but I was so young at the time, I didn't realize how much time and effort those people put into getting their art to look that good. It's easy to get discouraged when you see so many other artists that seem to be a thousand steps ahead of you, but you have to focus on your own art and your own journey. It's not a competition, you should draw because you have a passion for it, not because you want to get something out of it. DJ is obviously still far too stubborn to admit to what they're doing, but hopefully with enough time and enough people trying to help them understand, they'll stop tracing and just practice their own art instead.

@heartsandtarts2 жыл бұрын
Here are some simple ways of determining if someone is tracing! 1: There are parts of the image that are drawn noticeably different 2: Their line work is unstably shaky, which alludes to the idea that the ‘artist’ in question’s hands were trembly and inexperienced 3: Their use of color theory is severely lacking/non existent. Artists at that point should already have a grasp on colors, so they would be less likely to use black and white to shade a drawing 4: They use an AIRBRUSH to completely RUIN the drawing when it was BAD enough 5: They have very little spacial awareness, when adding their own elements to their traced drawing it looks awkward and noticeably misplaced. For example, the green raccoon tail they added in themselves, as well as the tail in their other drawing disappearing when it should have been drawn behind their legs, as WELL as the lack of stomach in their other drawing when they forgot to trace that part in the original piece. 6: Their response to being called out is severely immature. They tend to shift the blame whenever possible These are all very tell-tale signs to look out for. Of course if a tracer is clever, they are able to mask these signs. When that occurs the original drawings they trace would need to be present to compare both drawings. There are many tracers of various age groups, so be very careful!

Thanks for this hearts!
@Parrotcat2 жыл бұрын
Id like to disagree on 2! My hands are naturally shaky and Ive been an artist for many years. Shaky lines dont equal tracing, in my case my lines even get less shaky when i trace my own paper drawing digitally. And shaky lines can just be a stylistic choice as well. I really like more "messy" artstyles.
@heartsandtarts2 жыл бұрын
@@Parrotcat This is where I also disagree. My hand is shaky as well, as I am usually medicated and caffeinated when I draw. That’s why I edit my brushes to have a certain amount of stabilization in them, that way when I draw it self corrects and has smoother transitions. If experienced artists use shakiness as a stylistic choice, often times you’ll see the line art still has intention. The strokes weren’t made absentmindedly, they were guided by an experienced hand. You’ll be able to see that quite easily, there’s also the fact that it has a consistency throughout the artwork and looks pleasing.
@bruhdoublebruh69342 жыл бұрын
The inconsistency of their art style was the dead give away for me
@Parrotcat2 жыл бұрын
@@heartsandtarts I didnt at all talk about the situation in the video! Ofc there is a difference between unintentional shakiness and intentional shakiness. I made my comment because I dont want someone who (probably) isnt an artist themself and cant tell that difference, to now think all shaky lines = traced or inexperienced I too often use a stabiliser, I intentionally choose how much shakiness i want my art to have and adjust it accordingly. But tracing is very much possible on paper as well, though it happens less.

I will say that as a young kid just starting out art, I traced a lot, but I never posted any traced work. Thinking back, it actually helped me understand anatomy and shapes fairly well before I used those skills to help me with my original work in art classes. So I’m more on the side where tracing isn’t “bad” unless you post it and claim it as your own work when someone else put the effort into it.

I'd be a complete liar if i said I have never traced before, because I used to when I was 11. Since then however I have grown to find my own style and I'm very proud of where I am today. I have learned from my mistakes and haven't traced since then. Its good for practice so long as you don't post and claim the artwork is yours, that can be very damaging. With this wake up call I imagine this person will learn to steer away from tracing people's art without completely dissuading them from continuing to draw, because they seem to be quite young and just starting out on youtube. I'm hoping they take this on board, stop what they're doing and make their own way through. Interesting how they seem to be tracing art associated with warrior cats. Someone suggested Cheeteh Z's art was traced by them in the comments, kind of why this is so personal to me (as part of the fandom) I think the practice will do them good, but the fact they are tracing and claiming it is their own is not okay, I hope they learn this before it's too late

2:06 just a note here, most artists are extremely uncomfortable with people tracing other people's art and as someone who has had someone trace my art before and even credit me, it made me extremely uncomfortable. a good rule of thumb is to not trace people. if you need help with anatomy, studying and referencing actual images of animals and muscle structure is the best bet you have, instead of tracing other people's art, who have already grasped anatomy and since stylized it.

in my opinion, tracing other people's artwork is completely fine if you just never post it online. I used to do this in the past, and sometimes still do when I need to figure out a difficult pose. Also, the cat drawing they traced is supposed t to be Spottedleaf from warriors: into the wild. (im obsessed with warrior cats lol) Its obvious they traced since first they have differant art styles for each art they made.. well, not made but copied. When I do speedpaints I show me doing the lineart and coloring, and i do not cut out anything besides me drawing the base art. the reason i cut out drawing the guide lines is because I dont want to make the actual process of the drawing to long, but i also want to make it so my veiwers dont have to skip to the end (because i dont my subscribers or veiwers think my art videos are long and "boring" XD) thank you for exposing this person. i dont think its right to steal artwork, not give credit and lie all at once. its cheating, and when your cought, its probably very embarresing.

Yeah it is 100% ok to mimic someone's art style. If DJ Swag freehanded the original artwork, it would still be in their own style, but you could probably still tell who they're inspired by. The reason why this would be okay is that, one of the artists understand more things than the other. 4:04 as an example. When you see the original piece, it is pretty clear that the artist understands lighting, perspective, and line weight. The traced one feels like everything was put down haphazardly. There doesn't seem to be any understanding of line weight or coloring. You can trace all you want, but your art will eventually turn into something new as you learn art principles. It should also be noted that professional artists do this all the time as well. They study from others, learning from people who have a better understanding of those principles. Of course, they don't claim it as their own and freehand rather than trace.

I have a question about tracing, let's say I trace someone's art and put it on KZbin but do not clame it as my own/credit the original artist, is that okay?

I trace for practicing my art, not for copying and submitting it as my own!! That would be just mean. If I ever show my traced art, I make sure to say I traced it, and give credits. Ty for making this video Leamon!

I’m a bit late to this but I used(still do lol-) to trace using images and drawing them on paper but I never claimed them as my own! It was my way to practice and get the idea of the shape of what these characters looked like.

Tracing is valid if you are starting out but if you claim it to be your own that’s crappy. And the person can’t say it’s heavy referencing it not you can tell Don’t post something if it’s traced unless it’s your old art i traced a lot it helps young artists realize they can do this they can be an artist that they can draw lines on a paper it builds confidence but eventually you will need to start drawing on your own your own I love how you shared your experience with tracing when you were younger because all artist can relate to this

It’s so sad that people are tracing hard-working artist’s art. I hope one day, DJ will realize this and start doing their own drawings to find their true art style.

What I did with art while I was learning was I looked at other people's styles, took some snippets out of some, made some of my own stuff, and mixed it up to create my own style that I am currently very happy with. I think sometimes there are things I can improve on, but you build up those skills over time. Practice makes perfect, so if you keep trying, you'll get it some day!

I have different art styles, I would sometimes draw warrior cats with cartoony eyes, and then sometimes I would try drawing warrior cats with realistic eyes. And I post them on Tik tok and I’m scared if people will think it’s traced.

Tbh I used to trace things when I was younger, but it was only ever bases for characters because I could never get the proportions right. I also had a friend of mine who would fill on trace art like, Color it exactly how that person had done aswell, then she would show me and try to pass it off as her own. I had seen her art style before and I knew that she had traced it, but she wouldn’t admit that she did. I disowned her long ago because she just became too toxic.

I'd absolutely hate if someone traced any of my art which is quite unlikely since I don't post art anywhere. but where you said you can tell it's traced by how well the drawing is compared to the accessories is is so true and that is a definite way to know it's traced but my main problem is if I ever posted art I'm good at art in my opinion, but I just can't draw accessories and other stuff like that and I feel that if people don't think about it, people like me who aren't really good at drawing accessories could be falsely accused of tracing. Btw I love your videos, and art it looks so good.

What I’ve been saying to DJ is don’t trace just practice!
@pinkusdean11782 жыл бұрын
I started drawing by holding paper to my TV and tracing paused scenes from my mlp dvd. When I started digital art I did just grab a couple imgs from Google and traced them aswell. It's understandable to trace especially at a young age. But the main thing is if you're gonna do it then don't post it, keep it private and as a learning experience Vs claiming it as original work. Even when credited alot of artists still feel uncomfortable with their art being traced at all. If it's not a learning material (some artists create traceable materials and pose sheets) then you're best to just keep it private and practice.

The thing I did was, use body bases but, I always said, it was not my art, and actually the bases have helped me draw really better. But stealing the art and tracing it then saying it’s there own, that’s just wrong. Best way is to practice. But don’t steal.

Hey leamon! (sorry if I spelled wrong) I was wondering if you could make a video on how to know if another jammer might be using you for items. It happened to me when I was playing. I gave them many many, chests and we did a fashion show after hurt before we started my bud was in my den so I went there.. I get a jag saying, “WHY DID YOU LEAVE?!” And respond with just a “.” Because I didn’t know what to do. Then they say “say goodbye” and I try to respond but they unbuddied me and their other friend who also gave stuff to them! I immediately friended the other jammer, who was their bud and told them. She had unfriended them too and screamed at me when I tried to talk to her. Please make a video to inform about how jammers can use you, I don’t want other jammers to go through that

Yeah looking at the art they’re probably a young kid who thought no one would notice. But traced art always has a certain look to it, that bizarre gap in quality and lack of consistency between different elements of the drawing that throws you off immediately. Like I said I think this person is really young and the community shouldn’t be too harsh. Don’t dislike bomb, don’t send hate comments, just let them know that they won’t be allowed to participate in competitions and such with traced art

I started drawing by tracing but i never claimed it as my own, And i get very upset when someone traces my drawing. I was at a summer camp and i went to go talk to someone from a diffrent cabin i had left my sketchbook open on my bed but when i came back the girl who had a bed right next to me was copying my drawing looking back and forth to make sure it was exact. I wouldnt have minded if she had asked me first but i was very mad at her when she did it without permission and she kept the drawing that she made and wrote "By (Insert girls name) " and didnt credit me at all.

I used to trace from elementary to 8th grade. It was my friend who eventually told me how wrong tracing was and asked if I posted any of it, I had said no cause it wasn’t really my art I had been tracing just to learn anatomy now I can draw with out tracing. (Well I still draw over irl animals. Mainly when I’m struggling with a pose)
