At 75 yrs old , I've been riding Harleys for 60 years. Panheads , Knuckles , Shovels and Evolutions - used Kendal racing oil (Brad Penn recently )in all of them with great success. When I graduated to a Twin Can I used Mobil 1 20w50.

I was just going to comment about using kendall. Kendall literally can handle 200° more heat than the best mobile one has ever been able to produce and although mobile one is a better oil than it was just 10 years ago I wouldn't put that in anything I own. The Walmart super tech oil literally tests better than mobile one. The new Valvoline restore and protect may be a good ticket. But anything that will run in the primary, a timing chain in an engine is the most stresses you can put any kind of oil under. And 7590 gear oil actually flows better cold than does 50 weight motor oil

Good video guys. I always like hearing people’s real world experiences. When first deciding on the oil I wanted to run in my 2009 twin cam, I started researching professional independent oil test results. I found one extensive study that ran every motorcycle oil on the market through 20-25 different tests. You name the test and it was in there. Each oil earned a score of 1 (worst) through 10 (best) with decimals (example 9.2) for the category, and at the end all the categories were added together for the final score. In every test without exception, two oils always dominated the results: Mobil 1 V-Twin and Amsoil V-Twin, with Amsoil usually winning by one or two decimal points, but Mobil 1 did win and edge out Amsoil in a few tests. If Amsoil got a 9.8 score, then Mobil 1 got a 9.7. The results were that close. In the end when all categories were tallied, Amsoil took the top spot by two decimal points and Mobil 1 came in second place. The results were so close you really couldn’t go wrong with either oil, but those two oils did win by a significant margin over the other oil brands. I’ve run Mobil 1 V-Twin in all three holes for twelve years. Some years I’ve mixed in 20% Lucas Oil Stabilizer, and some years not, and have added one ounce of Motorkote hyper lubricant per quart of oil to all three holes for about ten years now, and have almost no wear to speak of. When draining all three compartments I have no metal fragments on the magnetic plugs. At 20,000 miles my mechanic had to pull the front head off to replace a broken exhaust bolt that had seized up and snapped while trying to remove the exhaust (they have a machine shop to repair). While the head was off he showed me the cylinder wall. He had never seen the original crosshatching in such good shape. Said it almost looked like new from the factory. I have tried Bel• Ray in the Primary and it seemed to work very nicely, and I understand that their transmission oil works very well too. For me Mobil 1 V-Twin has been a real winner, and knowing the test results I wouldn’t hesitate to run Amsoil as well. Flip a coin! Also, I never let my oil go over 3,000 miles before changing it. Buying new oil is a lot cheaper than buying new engines! Ride safe y’all from New Hampshire.

Thanks for your detailed comment. Very good to hear your positive experience. I've seen the same video testing. I would not be the least concerned running said oils in the appropriate temsp. What was NOT in the test was how the engine sounded running any of the oils. My experience has been that both of those oils, while they lubricate well, also tend to have more top end noise...and that is the only reason I do not run either of them. This has nothing to do with performance or lubrication, I just don't like that they don't quiet the top end sound as well as some other oils. Again, thanks for sharing your experience! KP

@@DKCustomProductsthanks for getting back on that Kevin. I appreciate your feedback. Great first name you have by the way, I’m a Kevin too! I remember you covering the top end noise in the video with these two oils, and since you do so many oil changes in a season and like to experiment, I’d encourage you to try this if you haven’t already. For one oil change run either the Mobil1 V-Twin or the Amsoil V-Twin and run with it 20% Lucas Oil Stabilizer in either the original or the synthetic blend. They both work fine with the synthetic oil. As you know the Lucas not only thickens the oil up a little bit but also makes the oil cling to metal. Since you have such a good ear for that top end noise, I would very curious to see if you felt that alone quieted that noise down. Take it into consideration, and your findings, pro or con, might even make for a good video. Again, thanks for getting back on that, and keep the rubber side down! God bless - KF

I recently learned that while Harley says Syn 3 in all 3 holes, you actually need a heavier Gear oil in the transmission. This is especially true if you suffer dreaded "5th Gear Whine". I agree that the Stealership is not necessarily your best source of maintenance information, since they would prefer you just buy a new bike every year.

Hey guys, just subscribed today because I'm going to switch over to external breather. I've run Syn 3 when my 2012 FLHTK was under warranty. I switched to Mobile1 20-50 in all 3 holes, had top end clatter. Switched to Amsoil with no problem. Tried RedLine, loved the ShockProof in the trans. When I used RL Primary Fluid I experienced an awful noise like the compensator was trash. I drained and install Amsoil 20-50 and the noise went away, get this while draining the RL my garage smelled like I took a poop. Maybe bad oil. I'm back with Amsoil, but staying with Shockproof in the trans. I'm going Spectro in all holes next. Just my $.02...

Weekend warrior here. Use the Mobile 1 oils in the engine and primary with one caveat that I add Lucas additive to the engine. Since it sits all week and sometimes two, the lucas helps keep the top lubricated during start ups. For the transmission, use a Mobile gear oil as that seems to give me less clunkier shifts.

I finally decided to go with Syn 3 in the motor and I did try the Harley gear oil in the transmission and the primary. I figured that if I stick with the oil that Harley recommends I can't go wrong. So far after almost 5000 miles I haven't had any issues with my transmission and primary. The transmission actually does seem less clanky.

I have researched oil analysis reports and test after test on all the oils and it seems like nothing beats Amsoil. I run their 20w-50 in the motor and their Primary fluid in my primary. Just seeing this video so I’ll add this comment I seen a test between H-D Syn-3 oil versus Amsoil they did a spinning steel balls test in their oils and brought the temperature of the oil to highest extreme temperature. They showed at that temperature a engine would of exploded. So they shut down both testing machines inspected the steel balls for scuff marks. The steel balls in Harley oil showed strong visible scuff marks and the balls in Amsoil showed a faint scuff mark. Harley doesn’t make their oil, Amsoil does. That convinced me to go with Amsoil

I think Kevin is right, the key is decent oil from one of several brands changed on time. Because of DK's comments on oil temps even in twin cooled like mine (my M8 can hit 254 deg F on super hot days), I'm with Amsoil engine, Amsoil Trans, Amsoil Primary. The latter two are specific formulations and work fine. Amsoil has been shown to stand up to high temps (at least for a while). I don't trust Harley's smaller or different oil pump on the twin cooled vs regular M8 to install an oil cooler, so I'm just going to change to the reusable higher flow filter for now (just post warranty on my bike). At 4000 oil miles plus, the top end start up clatter seems more pronounced even with Amsoil. I always change at or before 5 k miles. I use HD Lucas Stabilizer at 20% engine only and that quiets the engine clatter at startup dramatically due, most likely, to film coating. Red Line's high moly formulation does the same. I have the oil test kit and will test at next change.

I know this is a year old as I am viewing it. I ride a 2012 RK 103” TC. I run Lucas in the crankcase. And redline in the transmission. I am in the N.E. Area. I ditched the Syn 3 a long time ago due to my opinion that it poured like water and wondered how it could maintain lubrication. I do have the top end clatter the dealer did try redline with a a set of lifters. But I never found the noise to quiet. Those are just my thoughts. But what it comes down to is like you said as long as it’s lubricated with proper application.

You are running some good oil. Most of the time the source of the top end clatter is the rocker arm shaft ticking against the rocker box bolts. There is an inexpensive solution that you can see at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/rocker-lockers-for-harley-davidson-twin-cam-motors-dk-rl-tc.htm

I've always use HD Syn3 in the motor/ primary and Red Line w/ shock proof in the trans in my 2010 Ultra Limited since new except 1 time I won a amsoil oil change package and had the top end rattle like you described and the Red Line really helped on shifting. I now have 97K+ miles. On the wife's 2018 Tri Glide I've been using Syn3 in the motor and the NEW HD heavy gear oil in the Trans/Primary after the HD update for the fluid transfer with the little hose.... been shifting great for her.

Been running Syn 3 since 2002. Bike has served me well thus far. I have about 64000 miles on the bike. In 2015 when I worked at a dealership I had them change my pushrods from quick connect to solid. When they had the top end opened up the tech said it was clean. Additionally, when I switched from Conventional to Syn 3 my oil temperature dropped significantly. Finally, the only noise that I pay attention to is the rumble from my exhaust.

Now running TriboDyn. I had been using Amsoil before my stage 2 and liked it very much. However, I noticed a temp increase after the swap, so I decided to give full-syn TriboDyn 20-50 V-twin m/c oil a try. Runs quieter and is about 6 degrees cooler than my Amsoil temps. An added bonus is increased fuel mileage at an average of 48+ mpg without hammering. BTW, keep your oil level about halfway on the dipstick as the service manul states for the best fuel mileage. TriboDyn has a unique blue color too. A University study showed that it outperformed all other oils, and I am now a believer. The price is about the same at $19.95 a quart. Hope this helps someone.

I have had the same EVO from new since 92 with 62k on it and have used/tried a lot of oils but will only tell you of the three that made an impression on me. AMSoil 20w50. seemed to run cooler with more valve train noise, then 4 years ago something change in the oil that a group of us have encountered. After highway speeds in 100 heat, the oil pressure drops to zero at isle. This only happened with AMS oil. VR1,engine was quitter ,oil temp and performance the same as AMS oil but no loss of oil pressure. Schaefers 20w50 7000 race oil. Oil pressure good and right about 2700 rpm the engine is ungodly quite. Oil temps run between 200 and 220 depending on conditions on all the oils. . Lately I switched to a Hubb reuseable mesh oil filter and have gained 5 psi- 25 psi at cruising speeds that's higher then it came from the factory.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 29 күн бұрын
I had similar experience with Amsoil...seem to lubricate fine, but very noisy valve train...so I did not continue using. Never experienced the drop in oil pressure. ACK! 😱 I like the VR1 ok also. My experience with Schaefers was very good also...almost enough to get me to switch from Redline....it may even be better than Redline, but I guess I may be in a bit of a rut there. lol Yes, reusable oil filters not only filter better, but they put less parasitic drag on the engine. I started with Amsoil 3 hole, then started doing my own work on my Fat Boy, stayed with Amsoil with moderate blow-by using DK Catch Cans. Then got my Road Glide in 2023, the Blow-by was excessive…should have taken it back but discovered the issue after two months of riding. Chris at Cycle Solutions put RedLine 20W-60 in my crank case and I haven’t looked back because it reduced my Blow-By. Changed to RedLine ⚙️ for my trans and discovered the bike has the migration issue where transmission oil is sucked into the primary…I never noticed it before using same oil. Just installed an Evolution Industries Stage 1 clutch pack, which calls for ATF Type F. Still have Pepto Bismol coming through the clutch adjuster. Waiting on heads from JET Johnson Engine Technology, so can’t give a review of the new oiling set up. SilverBAK has DK Custom Catch Cans on T-Man Air Cleaner, and NICECNC Trans Top Cover. You guys did a great, non opinionated video. Good advice. My feelings- just use a good quality branded oil and make your own judgement. All the brands you listed are fine. A good 20w50 engine oil or 75w140 in the Transmission and primary is fine. (Gear oil is measured differently so the numbers aren't apples to apples. 75w140 is about the viscosity of 20w50 engine oil.) I've used Mobil 1 gear oil in primaries and transmissions of my Harleys and Buells for 15 years. no issues. ATF is fine in Primary. I've even used Shell Rotella or Mobil 1 diesel oil in engine before. I use it in my Japanese single cylinders. Everything you said is good advice.

it all comes down to changing it on reg intervals i use redline 20w-50 v twin im at 150 hp and redline works great with heat with redline the hotter the motor gets the more oil pressure it holds but i still change it at 2500 miles

I use Lucas Oil Full Synthetic engine oil and HD Syn3 for primary for my 2016 Sportster Roadster with 10k miles, and happy with it, engine runs cool about 180deg with oil cooler. Now I am trying Redline for both engine and Primary. Time will tell..

Shell rotella t6 synthetic. All 3 holes. Also run it in my victory vision, semis, pickup trucks, tractors, generators, pretty much everything.

Don’t forget Drag Specialties oil. I don’t know who makes it for them but I have never had an oil related issue with it.
