I feel that the case related to YG is just the beginning to unveil (more of) the dark side of K-Pop industry. The progress is so quick, so let's see what else will be revealed in a year. EDIT. What makes K-Pop unique is, it's fully supported by the government, even to the funding. It's a cultural strategy and one of the backbones of their GDP. If there's a serious issue regarding to the idols mental health & abuse that lead them to use drugs, then it's a national problem. [Possibly] they don't use drugs for fun, but they use it as a cry for help. To survive. As an Asian, drugs and even weed are strictly prohibited in many countries. No matter how 'conservative' you think it is, that's the fact. South Korea has a death penalty for drug trafficking even though no one has been executed since 1997. That makes it a huge problem and whomever is involved must try hard to clean up the mess. If there are more similar cases in the future, the government certainly needs to review the creative labour protection policies. So even though these misfortunes happened, there's still hope for a better K-Pop industry if the citizens use this opportunity to speak up. PS. I studied creative industries and I've always been curious about K-Pop industry, that's why I focus on that aspect. Just my two cents 😊

Based on the suicide rate of South Korea as the 10th in the world, there's a need for the government to step up their laws on mental health. If they want to push KPOP as source of economic impact, they need to pass laws specifically for KPOP industry. They in house trainees basically at their young age 13 to 20s, debuted them at the young age. It must be a necessary requirements that part of their contract must include the Physical and Mental Health Management. These laws must be a standard form for the entertainment companies to follow. It's saddening that talents are wasted because of poor management and dirty tactics of the monsters behind the companies.

I'm Korean and I've researched some Korean articles regarding this issue. What I've learned is that YG's organizational structure itself was the problem in the first place. Yanggeun, the biggest shareholder of YG had all the power and did not delegate tasks enough to his employees. The culture was too authoritative, more rigid than any other SK Jaebeuls (big corporates) and all the YG artists could do for their future was to find favor with this one man in the company, Yang PD. Everybody was under this cut-throat competition only to earn YG's attention and make a debut. YG is well known for his eye for finding gems but the company system was too much dependent on him and very inhumane. Regarding this, I've found a YT channel of an ex-YG trainee, MAYDONI, explaining why she had to quit it. YG's company reputation among the industry employees has been very bad for these reasons regardless of their artists' popularity. You can find the reviews on job sites like Job Planet, a Korean Glassdoor-like service. Although this cannot justify the drug usage prevalent among their artists, we can get some understanding of the background and what has cornered them with that much intensity. I think this issue should not be considered just as a criminal case since it's talking about the culture behind this, deeply ingrained in many organizations in SK.

Depression is an illness and there are drugs used to treat that illness. Like in the Park Bom situation, SK society bashed her when what she was taking was necessary for her condition. So until SK society is able to wrap their minds around the fact that sometimes proper treatment of depression will involve some type of drug this is going to continue. The mental health discussion NEEDS to be had. SK has a stigma against ALL drugs even those necessary for treatment, which means ppl will move in secrecy and get their hands on whatever they can to cope which would be illegal or recreational substances. That’s why SK has an issue with alcoholism as well, ppl aren’t getting the proper treatment because it’s taboo. Edit: This goes for other types of mental illness, not just depression. Please don’t think “a good environment” will cure mental illnesses, that’s a very harmful thought process. Some people do not produce the right amount of chemicals in their brain to function “normally.” Thank you all for the love, remember to be respectful as this is a sensitive topic & something that many people struggle with. 💜

He's not okay. The life of an idol is hard, there is no soothing or compassion. Idols need to work all the time and get no time to see their family or to take a few days off. Dating is illegal, driving a car (in YG Ent.) is illegal. There's no freedom. Bobby even mentioned that they can't go out, even to buy groceries, without asking permission. It's no wonder he turned to drugs (Let's also not forget he didn't even take them, he thought about it, but didn't do it). And I understand that people are mad at him, because he's supposed to be a role model, but he's only human after all. He has so much weight on his shoulders, sooner or later you break. I hope Hanbin seeks help and revovers from the toxic Kpop environment.

20:23 saying that taking drugs is a personal choice and depression shouldn't be an excuse, is like saying that suicide is a personal choice. Both are forms of escapism (if done for that motive and not because they want to experience new things).🤔Yes, both of them are in the end a personal choice, but there are many external factors that have major influence on this. So I disagree with you. Mental health should be taken into account.

While I do believe depression isn’t an excuse for drug use, it is such a big reason for it. If people want to fix the drug problem you need to fix the mental health problem. People who regularly do drugs, do it for two reasons. 1 addiction, which is a mental health disorder and 2 they want an escape. If you have never had depression you will never understand the type of helpless low you can get. So much that an escape is all you need whether that be drugs or suicide. It also doesn’t make you a bad person it just means you made a mistake because you thought there was nothing left. Along with his depression, I think BI was under so much stress to make songs and that’s why he thought of LSD because of artists like John Lennon and The Beatles who took LSD and where considered genius’s. He was a young kid under stress who wanted an escape and get songs done but I also know how drugs look to Koreans so I’m not sure he is gonna recover from this sadly

Well it's kinda hard when you think you know the artist (considering the entire point of kpop is to be "close" and "know" the artist) and suddenly people are saying things that go against what you know, and you don't know what's true. The media lies but the media could be telling the truth and you "know" your artist to be truthful but they could be lying. So many people would just default to what they know. Theres been situations like the media calling Michael Jackson a pedophile. They made a whole but thing about it, but then you find out people were just paid off to say that shit cause he burned a couple bridges with people. That's why it's hard to put faith in media. Plus when it comes down to it everyone wants to believe the person they put their faith into if they actually did do something bad had a good reason to do it. B.I said it was cause he was going through some stuff and we dont know if that was true or not or if he just wanted to do it (which is pretty typical in the states so a lot of international fans probably didnt even bat an eye considering a good chunk of them tried or did something with drugs) but if you love someone you're gonna give them the benefit of the doubt.

@@itamochivargas6233 to answer your question about b.i said he's thru some stuff. Back in 2016, Yg shipped iKON to japan after they made their debut in 2015. And they're doing non-stop tours in japan, most of the time they do it by themself on their time there, and b.i, as leader, i'm sure at some point he's being pressured to make hits and handling his team at the same time hence the drug allegation. I think that's why, as a person who follow their activities.

Everything I said was just a statement of personal experience (not saying it applies to everyone) most of the other people ik in the kpop community didnt really see it as a big of a deal as Korean community did. I also never once stated it wasn't his fault. I feel you probably didnt read everything I wrote and just skimmed it. The point of what I wrote was trying to explain why fans like to give their idols the benefit of the doubt. I never said B.I shouldn't take responsibility for his actions either. It'll still be the same family just under a different name. Y'all are making me feel so very sad for y'all. Think of it this way. Some women change their names when they get married right? But they're the same person just with a different last name. Changing the name will help the company on a psychological level with promotions and such. Right now everyone thinks drugs, prostitution etc as soon as they hear YG. It's unfortunate but this is a fact. You don't want this type of automatic thought attached to any artist. For example BP. You don't want people to automatically have the thought prostitution when one of the girls say they're from YG. It's a subconscious thing and can change the way they are treated even though the person doing it is unaware they are being discriminating. Yes it is YG himself that has the actual accusation but a lot of people especially non-kpop western fans will only hear prostitution and side-eye many artists in the company and maybe even in kpop itself. Stuff like this isn't unusual within the western music industry either but people will still put on airs so they can feel superior.

Also, “Depression isn’t a good enough reason to take drugs”??? Wow I’m honestly baffled by this statement. Many of these artists do not see their parents for YEARS, they can’t have relationships, they can’t even get proper vacations, sooo lonely, such a lonely sad life. How do you expect them to cope? DKDK, you know what, I urge you to please do this exercise, mention the things you do to de-stress and see if idols like ikon have the freedom or time to do those things. “Depression is not a good enough reason to take drugs”?? Jonghyun killed himself because of the pain this lifestyle caused him. Depression and more. Does it have to get to that stage before you all come to your senses?? “Korea is a drug-free, anti-drug country and we take pride in that” Honestly, what is there to be proud of??? Your insanely high suicide rates or the fact that those of you who managed to be alive are some of the most unhappy people on earth? Anti-drug my foot. Y’all are playing yourselves.

Sure, drug is one of the way to cope but at the end, its a choice. You can choose not to do drug. I'm not blaming people who did took it, hanbin is one of my fav idols, but to make it all about depression is kind of shallow here. They knew its illegal when they took it, so they should've accept the consequences following their choices.

@@agreatsad It's not just depression, it's also their mental health. Not everyone can be as strong when they're depress and can easily make poor choices in life. To the point of even ending their life. So saying that it's shallow is a bit heartless don't you think. First of all depression is a form of mental illness and can even lead to suicide as we have seen in many cases. Some people are weakened by this and would find an escape and unfortunately some goes to drugs others commit suicide. Shallow is not a word I would use to explain this situation.

The whole situation with seunghoon I understand. Not only are the higher ups that could have controlled seunghoon from saying anything but I really doubt he would have come out publicly and said anything. Personally I wouldn’t not expose a friend of mine like that. Especially in a situation where both of us were to be in the public eye, their career could go on a downturn AND become hated. I’d rather try to help them out and try to get them not to do drugs again. I have a question. Let’s say DKDKTV were to reach a level of exposure and become a REALLY big KZbin channel. Would either of you rat out the other if you were to find out the other is doing drugs?? Pretty sure you wouldn’t. Wether it be from a business stand point or friendship stand point. You’d probably try to get the other to stop. Or maybe wouldn’t even care.
