this band singlehandedly convinced me to actually sit down and learn Yiddish, if only to understand the lyrics and be able to sing along. It's quite rare to find such catchy and loveable songs nowadays that also carry such a strong political message. Love it.

I speak Arabic and German, so I can even understand some of the semitic words, as Hebrew and Arabic share some root words, plus I understand almost all the Germanic words, but I want to sit down someday and learn Yiddish for real; it's one of my favourite languages; it sounds like melodic German Yiddish music is so beautiful; something about reaches very deep into me like no other music

As a native German speaker, It's amazing how I can basically understand everything. The transliteration to the Latin alphabet looks a bit wonky at times, but it's pretty easy to get the gist of things.

Yiddish is related to German but it's a separate language. Saying Yiddish is German is a bit like saying Catalonian is Spanish, Kurdish is Persian or Swedish is Danish. There is a large number of similarities and some mutual understanding but it's still two different things.

@salsicha5305 4 жыл бұрын
I see your point but to be fair Yiddish is almost mutually intelligible with German, I don’t speak Yiddish but I (german speaker) get what they are saying just fine, it’s another language, yes, but it’s pretty understandable to mix the two if you don’t speak or know either

Rares-Alexandru Ionascu I mean, not really, especially if you’re talking Plattdeutsch, the ease a German speaker has with Yiddish is way bigger than a portuguese speaker with Spanish, and they don’t sound as similar as Plattdeutsch and Yiddish

I agree, although Yiddish and German are closer than Persian and Kurdish and the other examples you named. Yiddish is basically just medieval German, listen to medieval(Mittelhochdeutsch) poems and compare them to yiddish, THAT is the same thing. This is because the jewish diaspora from Germany started in medieval times, the jews preserved medieval German.

This song (only Yiddish version) came up on my workers song playlist on spotify. And firstly I wasn't 100 % convinced. Then I listend to it another time. And the more often I listened to it the more I loved it. And I am a German native, and I made it a challenge for me to try to understand everything that the song says. And it forced me to just stop whatever I was doing and focus 100 % on the song and that was actually a very interesting experience. And now I see this version on KZbin. And the video is fecking great!

Transcendent. Bittersweet, stinging, and Defiantly Joyful. I cry everytime I hear Yiddish, the mameloshen, the mother tongue of my ancestors. Would it please the wastelands to know that love? Many places, Yiddish is ridiculed. "Gee, you sure talk German funny." Sadly, when Chava Alberstein recently performed in Israel, as was reported in the Forward, singing in Yiddish, she was laughed off the stage. Es pas nisht! (This will not do. It is improper). For Tikkun ha-Olam, Zay a Mensch! Love.

Bismarck was referring to the Catholic blacks, i.e. the centrists, not the anarchists. As an anarcho-capitalist can never join a fascist (because the fascist will resist the anarcho-capitalist's philosophy of self-interest which contradict with the his statist ideals and the anarcho-capitalist shall resist the fascist's restrictions on immigration which contradict his philosophy of the pursuit of wealth through open borders and a meritocratic society), an anarcho-communist can never join a Marxist-Leninist, lest the Marxist-LEninist see his police officers hit with molotovs and the anarcho-communist's local organisations destroyed by the vanguard party.

As a german, that yiddish sounds like some 19th century german. You understand most of it, but it's really weird :)

In the state's there's this newish TV channel on Cable called Link TV. They have a music show and this would be perfect for it. Plus, the breaks in Democracy Now have musical numbers and they're looking for music that goes with story themes. It would be perfect to see this next to the stuff on Wisconsin.
