When I was at Texas Christian University I had a sociology course where the professor (an Asian-American male) defined "White Privilege" as not having more advantages in life, rather having fewer disadvantages/discriminations in life. Essentially, in our country's history, Caucasians (with few exceptions) have not faced the multiple generations oppression that most People Of Color (particularly African Americans) have faced, resulting in fewer disadvantages for them today. Sure, if you're a wealthy Caucasian, you are better off than all other economic/social classes in the U.S., but if you're a middle class Caucasian, you still have better chances to succeed in life because you don't have the systemic disadvantages that African, Asian, Hispanic, & Native Americans at the same economic/social class level have. Finally, when a non-Caucasian does become successful in the U.S., it isn't because of "Reverse Discrimination" as some Caucasians argue, rather it's because they have managed to overcome the disadvantages that they faced that many of their Caucasian counterparts didn't have to face.

That is a fascinating take on this - the word "privilege" suggests an advancement, and advantage, if you may. In this particular instance, white privilege also manages to control public opinion, it shapes the narrative, it determines the outcome. We know more about Dana White's history of humanity than we do about the physical abuse. That means, whatever you see or hear about him after his positives have been shared/told, should negate your negative judgement of him. To your point Jesse, when you decide who to elevate, you automatically decide who to relegate. Saying someone has fewer disadvantages automatically suggests those disadvantages are shifted elsewhere.

ESPN had 2 stories from the state of Mississippi. 1st Brett Farve with the help of the Mississippi state government stole money from the public assistance programs to build a soccer stadium for his daugther on the campus of his college in which he is an alumi. ESPN reports the story that Brett Farve donated money to his own foundation as a show of apology. 2. Deion Sanders is leaving Jackson State and was considered a sell out and a bunch of other things it was reported on ESPN for a whole week. The Brett Farve report was on a Saturday early in the morning and was not brought up again.

@@Chad4401 by its very definition we couldn't be racist scholar. We should like the negative portrayals of us? We should like or accept when the media states we're scary when those incarcerating us ate Caucasian males! They're interpreting the laws which are not equal. Were we that bad, would not the crime rate be higher according to the lies spread? So lately every show or movie portrays a gay person and children who exactly are the Target audience? What is Disney and Hollywood really conveying. It's been way past hilarious to see a man in a dress yet no new storyline has been introduced and the more famous the black actors, the more they show up with that tired ass dress on. When they refuse, they're crazy. Sir that's an agenda. Black men can't be strong for you depict them as scary. That's a you problem but to get-along and work you negate women and sell your morals and we're expected to be gracious in this alleged land-of-equality. Hughley once again raises the issue of the use of the term Black on Black crime, that for some reason many high profile Black people, see as an offensive term. He points out that it was created by a member of the media. It is said to have been first expressed, by a Black Journalist, but who really knows when and who first uttered any phrase. It is by no means any more offensive than is many of the terms, Black people use. It basically expresses the reality that us killing on another at the rate we do, in our already precarious state of existence, is a crying shame. That is if one views it from the perspective of us. Thus It is ironic, that the Black intellectuals who started this inexplicable denunciation of this phrase, are also the ones who have propagated the term "seeing ourselves through the - 'White Gaze' " - meaning to see ourselves through Whites peoples eyes. This is another way of charging people with practicing "respectability politics". Michael Eric Dyson has lead this charge, and he also seemingly functions as a self appointed spokesperson for Hip-Hop. How is saying Black on Black crime any different than saying, "we're headed for self destruction"? Hip-Hop said this in the 80's. Did Dyson or anyone else say we shouldn't say that, then? Hughley's comparison of Black celebrities with White elites is like comparing apples, in terms of the media coverage they get. No one cares about a White Elite, while celebrities are idolized.

Well yeah your points are all valid and true, but DL social order in every civilization known to mankind was constructed and regulated by the few who had the wealth or power to influence others. In fact, small tribes gave up their independence to join the constructs of civilization over 30,000 years ago. The Shaman became the chief, and the chief became the god-king, the eventually became generals, then priest, and finally rich the lords. Today we have the rich execs, elected officials, and soon the influencers. Point I’m making is, social control is both necessary for stability(no society can meet the needs of every individual), and it’s intrusive; it brings the greatest amount of societal good, while inflicting the greatest evils. But no matter how good, or bad, it comes at the cost of personal freedoms. Civilians needs a narrative to follow, because humans need order to escape a state of nature(which we did for a very long time, evidence is clear on which we all prefer). So yeah, wealthy people control everything, but if not those who’s risen to the ranks, then who? I think the goal should be focusing on changing who gets access to upward mobility, not curving up mobility all together.
@andreroy8141
@andreroy8141 Жыл бұрын
You Sir are trying to justify Elitism! That's just stupidity at its highest. Just because rich white men owned slaves, because they had the wealth and power to do so. Does mean society should just except that as a normal part of life. Just because they can look back at historical evidence of there being enslavement. DL is calling out hypocrisy. We all should be calling out hypocrisy in every level of society. All towards the goal of. When you know better! You do Better! You seem to be trying to justify just because something goes on. Then we should just except it as a part The Privilege of Rich. You know like children working as young as 7 or 56 hour work weeks. Get real.
@marcglenn
@marcglenn Жыл бұрын
@@andreroy8141 I’m specifically speaking to what I said, his point about control of the media. Of course the media is a tool used by the wealthy and the established, and of course they spread their own narratives. You’re talking about the principles of right and wrong. I’m not justifying anything, I’m simply pointing to the inevitability that their will be elites. Should the people hold them accountable? Absolutely; check and balance is key, but someone has to hold societal control, that can’t be ignored. I agree with his overall take on Dana White, but I think being critical of the entire structure of social control, is dangerous, and most importantly ineffective.
@andreroy8141

@@marcglenn Then take the stance of not only controlling our own media, but supporting and spending our advertising dollars there. That's why most of the time.
