Jermaine Jackson is incredibly talented. He's probably the most talented. There is no other Jackson who has produced a multiplatinum record (Whitney Houston) for anyone other than himself. Whitney's anthem rendition was top flight on vocal power, but Marvin's was next level song stylist. If you know you know...Whitney sang it, Marvin styled it.

Anytime that you can make a classic out of the National Anthem, you really are something special. And both Marvin and Whitney was something special. But Marvin Gaye made the National Anthem funky, but yet traditional at the same time! Marvin had the entire audience at The Forum rocking towards the end of his rendition. A classic performance!

Marvin's version was groovy but not many people came back to it after he sung it , unlike Whitney's her version became so popular that the record label was pushed to release it as a single. That single sold 750,000 copies in less than a week and was #1 on the charts.
@paytonbf1
@paytonbf1 2 жыл бұрын
@@mariahyohannes and part of why Whitney’s version was so popular, is because America was at war, and the country was feeling patriotic at that time. Marvin’s version, however, was very unique and funky, and only Marvin Gaye could sing the Star Spangled Banner the way that he sung it. And no one has sung it better, therefore, I’m rolling with Marvin Gaye’s version. But to each his or her own!
@mariahyohannes

@@paytonbf1 Whitney's version became a global hit, people in America were demanding it be released as a single. How are people in America feeling patriotic for a country they don't live in? Once again when Marvin sung his nobody cared to hear it after he sung it.

@@mariahyohannes that’s not true. I actually have an article that was written a few years ago on ESPN, in regards to how Marvin Gaye really mesmerized those that were in attendance when he sang his version, and how folks wanted to keep hearing it at the All Star game after parties. I’ve never seen any in-depth articles that have been written about Whitney’s version versus Marvin Gaye’s version. And I’m not saying that Whitney’s version wasn’t great. Her version was much more traditional, where as Marvin’s version was very innovative, funky, and special. If I can find that article about Marvin Gaye’s impact in 1983, I’ll link it here. Otherwise, I’d advise you to try to find the ESPN article on Google. You’ll then see why folks are still talking about Marvin’s version to this very day. And by the way, I love Whitney Houston. It was touched and not remembered. Whitney performed hers and literally had ppl from all over the world demanding it be released or they have a copy of it. The record company released it and it became a number one hit, the first time any artist in history has ever done it. And the only time. It sold over 750k in 8 days. Eventually selling over 2 million. Beyonce and Lady Gaga said their versions they sang was inspired by Whitney’s. Marvin was the man but his is not better. A couple things make Marvin's better than Whitney's 1. It was LIVE. Obviously she couldn't help the fact that the NFL at that time time mandated that the anthem performance be lip synced so it's no fault of her own but Marvin's was live and electric in the moment. 2. Marvin did what he always did. He "Marvinized" the song. It had his unique spin to it with the groove AND the profound/spiritual as he sang "thy star spangled banner" and invoked The Lord's name.

Here's why Marvin's is so awesome. Prior to him, the national anthem was just a run through and every one sounded boring. Then Marvin Gaye put his " Marvin Gaye" on it. More importantly, and you can listen for yourself, he slowed it down to where the audience can actually ponder the true meaning of the words. He literally asked you: " Sayyyyyy. . .can you seeeeeeeee. . .BY THE DAWN'SSSSSS earlyyyy liiiiight. . ." He draws out the words. It wasn't done before and hasn't been since. He put that track below and got your attention. It made us listen. It was the curve ball of all curve balls because it had failure written all over it. Then those threer notes that preceded his first word. After hearing that track and you thinking, "WTF", those three notes shock back into, " whoa, it's the Star Spangled Banner". Then he starts telling you slowly about what happened. Love Whitney, but Marvin's version is #2. Jimi is #1.

Stop it, to me it was wack off beat like hell all over the place. Withney Houston was way better. Dl hughley likes Marvin's Gaye better cause it was sang in a black way not how its normally sang and if you like it because of that ok but he did not sing it better than withney.

@@monk3070 First, "off beat like hell"...that phrase, as it pertains to this topic, speaks to the lack of credibility of your "musical ear". If you don't like the way he sang it, that's perfectly fine, you are entitled to your opinion, but Marvin was not off beat...that is not opinion, that is fact. Second, your claim that "DL hughley likes Marvin's Gaye better cause it was sang in a black way..." is an assumption an your part, as he didn't say that in this interview. Know what they say about assumptions right? Third, what is "in a black way"? That is a rhetorical question. I'm not really interested in your answer. There is more I could say, but let's agree to disagree on this, as the answer to "who sang it better", only generates opinions.

So here’s a bit if history. When Whitney and her musical director, Rickey Minor were trying to plan how they would do the anthem. It was Whitney who took inspiration from Marvin Gayes rendition. However she wanted to add space in it to give her time to flourish the melodic lines into the song. To add some flavor. I love Marvin Gaye but the entire planet has spoken. Whitney’s is the most memorable and better. And why are we even considering anything what DL Hugely has to say. He’s not a singer. He’s not even a real comedian.
