This is like a new world to me. Really nice seeing this vintage piece of Americana.

Great video Terry! I didn’t realize you have so many videos about Viking II transmitters I could have saved you from my emails. Thanks for posting them..

A properly working AM transmitter is really nice to listen to. I remember back around 1978 or so listening to it in my friends shack and it sounded like they were right in the same room with us. Greetings from Arizona. K8MB.

Great video, Terry! I bet there are tons of guys like me...whose memories you jog with every repair! You take some fairly daunting-looking tasks, and make them way easier to understand just by your calm, matter-of-fact approach. Thank you! Also, it's nice to see the old Allied name come back to life, and see that they appear to be respecting the old reputation by offering some excellent customer service. I kinda wondered, but now have a bit more confidence using them again. :-)

By the way, thanks for suggesting the Realistic DX-160. The one I found is working like a champ....with headphones, at least! Now, I just need to find a matching speaker (Obviously, I could use a number of things, but I prefer a match). Great call on your part, though! Thanks again!

Aloha Terry another great video. The Viking two was my first transmitter 40 years ago. I only used it on cw and I sure wish I still had it. Mahalo for sharing all knowledge with us.

Man oh man, the hours I used to spend browsing through the Allied Electronics catalogs when they came in the mail.

Interesting bit where all those resistors are out-of-tolerance. I don't see this problem in guitar amps!
@cobrasvt3474 жыл бұрын
I too have bought some resistors that were open also. Looked completely fine no visible damage physically. Kinda strange.

What is the large wax covered capacitor underneath the oil filled filter cap? I noticed it in this video and in another one of your Viking II videos. In transmitters that have supposedly been recapped, why hasn't that capacitor been replaced? I'm about to fix the audio in my Viking II, following this video, and I'm curious if that big wax capacitor needs to be replaced.

Yes, it was replaced before leaving the shop. That is a .5uf @600vdc cap

That's great that Allied did that for you. I wonder why the VR is open like that. Where are they manufactured my question.

Great video. Hey, could you do a video on how to make one of the newer lollipop microphones work on boat anchors like the Viking?
@ojjenkins71106 жыл бұрын
Get rid of the pre amp in the base. Those were put in for impedance matching to lower Z circuits. The Rochelle salt element needs a meg or over load for proper matching into the audio of older rigs with hi Z inputs.

Brilliant video Terry. Do you have a Patreon page? This type of information is something that I would like to contribute to so that you keep them coming. Thanks againfor the quality content.

Hello Paul, I do appreciate it sir. I do not have the Patreon page, Instead, some have been sending donations to my PayPal direct. That is n6tlu@comcast.net. Any amount helps me to offset some of the shop operations. I have 5 more Viking 2's, plus a B&W 5100B to troubleshoot. Videos in the works! Thanks, TD

Thank you Terry, this was fun and informative to watch. Interesting to see the open resistors, out of spec is one thing but open is another. What’s really going on, do they just cook themselves to death or when the caps go bad, they just open.

How do i get started in ham radio operating. They seem so cool

Check to see if there is a local ham club in your area. They would be the best source of info. Good luck

Is it not plausible to clean up the corrosion in the middle? seems like it's just bad connections?

Best to replace the damaged component. My luck if I didnt, would be a boomerang repair.

Grid current no more than 6 mills. Plate 230 mils. Mod is ok at 50 mils. Once loaded up re peak the grid with the oscillator buffer and grid looking at the grid current. I cut my teeth on a Viking II. If there is a red line on the meter that is for mod current peaks. OJ KØOJ
