Hi Terry, i am W7LTG name Francesca (YL) i new this old radio repair shop who pass on, Now i am in charge of the sales, lots old transceiver and transmitter (Swans and heathkits). Pick up Johnson viking 2 and it has been sitting in the shop over 40 years. i bought the viking very cheap. I did a full expedition look and like original condition. I did change the all filters caps. and got a good carrier over 110 walts no hum and its's grounded. modulation was not there at all. I replace most the caps for modulation section waiting for one more to come .02 600v. for the 807 tube. i have very low modulation current at 35ma. Someone has damage the 20k bias resistor and they add a bunch fixed resister. Thanks for telling about Allied Electronics and order the 20k 50w resistor. Modulation is low and clipping right now. i did replace the resistor the 2 100 ohms resistor they did double in value. will do further checking. Francesca W7LTG

This is a wonderful video about a classic Transmitter that I believe many new hams would love to see. I host a podcast that’s on yearly daily here on KZbin to try to encourage people to come into ham radio. Strangely enough, on QRZ, they have a trivia question regarding the Viking II. I thought it would be helpful for newer and even seasoned hams to see this wonderful presentation of how to tune this up. Great Transmitter and great video as well. I’ll be sure to credit your channel and put a link to it in my description section of my video. I really appreciate you taking the time and couldn’t together such a well organized video. All the best to you from Oregon, Larry de K7HN

Aloha and another great video. This was my first transmitter as a novice 40 years ago, It amazes me I ever made contacts with it only on CW. When I got my general I built the HW101 and did SSB. Sure wish I had kept it. Love watching all your videos learn something every time.

Holy crap...I haven't been to this channel in a while, one of my favorite tube and wine channels, and come to find these days the wine is being poured for you by itself at 0:30!! What's next stigmata!?

Wow that video brought tears to my eyes! It reminded me of when I had one back in 1962. Ran CW the whole time for years. Loved that transmitter along with my HQ170. Thanks for this great video! WB2CVE

Thanks for that tune up tutorial Terry. It is getting cold here now so have to get my HQ-140X finished. With it and the Viking II I should be able to warm the shop a bit. Thanks again, nice looking rig.

I keep my central Electronics 200v and 600L amp on to keep my shack warm. You've gotta get more BTUs and to get that you need MORE TUBE RIGS....lol

Nice Viking II for the price Terry. I recently picked one up with the vfo a 10 out of 10 for $75. I also got a Hammarlund SP-600 along with it for another $75..... wow! They both worked great... them the old caps showed their age on the viking II. Now its time to recap, restore.. then play again! 73 KD0COR Zach

Now there's a fine old boat anchor! There was one in my high school's shack (WA3BAR), almost 40 years ago. Yes, the aroma....even my SB101 smells nice.

You've done a nice job Terry, although the real magic I saw was Marcia pouring the Wine. Those radios have so many dials , its cool you know how to use them like the back of your hand - very cool. Good find

wow! That was very well done. I have had two Valiants and did not think the vfos were acceptable, so if iI could muster the strength to move the DX-100 a foot or two and lift the Viking II up (if I had one) it would thinkit would do great with a dds vfo!

Can you explain what you're doing with the coupling control? I see you're sorta rocking it back and forth, the manual says to return the "final" for a dip, I'm a bit lost on this. Thanks!

Ima curious if that Johnson can transmit on the 15/20 mc band. Great video series by the way. Kind regards, Eric Dee.

How does the main tuning dial get so squeaky like that?
@d-labelectronics5 жыл бұрын
Its a roller inductor, metal on metal contact. A little lube and it quiets right down. TD

It looked like junk, but. Ken W5FLV SK, put an ART-13 Modulation transformer into his VK2. This modulated both the screen and plate. He sounded like a BC-610! K5LYT
@jakeblues36765 жыл бұрын
Like be the Civil Defense Sticker!!
@siscok5lyt5 жыл бұрын
Don't role the inductor, with the plate voltage ON. This will pit the coil, due to arching. I move mine a little, then key it to see, if I am closer to the dip. Once, the sweet spot is found, record the dial settings. I never realized I needed one, until I owned one! K5LYT
@NebukedNezzer6 жыл бұрын
there are some NEEDED mods to make the viking 1 and 2 modulate correctly and not cook the 807s. many of the published ham mods are way to extreme and poor design. I could elaborate but you can dope it out or ask if you are interested.

they do NOT have great audio.they splatter 32khz wide at the half power points. don't put it on the air till its corrected or get LID complaints.
