Thank you for watching today's Dragonlance Setting episode. What do you think about the evolution of magic on Krynn? Leave a comment below.

Always preferred the idea of the 3 Pantheons granting magic to an extent (I say Pantheons cause some prayed to Paladine, Gilean & Takhisis for magic instead of the 3 gods of magic), and always found that the problem with bringing in too many things like 'Wild Magic' and the like, was that it all eventually spiralled out of control and the world ceased to be as 'grounded' in the reality of Krynn. Dunno if I explained this well-enough that said, loved this video, as always you hit the point on the head Adam, frankly at this point I don't know what this franchise would do without you keeping it alive.

I like this. There was a throw away line in the War of Souls trilogy that mentioned Draconians retained their magic while everyone else lost theirs. If this meant that Krynn dragons had their own source of magic or that Takahisis just wasn't stealing it is unclear. It must be pointed out though that the alien dragon high lords were collecting native dragon skulls to fuel their magics which lends more to dragon magic but then, Takahisis was stealing this too from the high lords. There is also another sorta magic source in the dead souls themselves. Dalamar was taking magic directly from the dead, which I guess is the same as what the Gods do. This necromancy was better demonstrated in the Minotaur Wars. Any, love these videos.

It should be noted that the Vanished Moon appendix is no longer considered canon. It was largely written by a fan and not edited properly, so they removed it in the paperback version. More accurate portrayals of magic can be found in the later game books by Sovereign Press/Margaret Weis Productions. I highly recommend Towers of High Sorcery.

I still prefer the original dragonlance concept , thought having 3 gods of magic was cool , even better than the realms 1 god ,it fit the struggle of good,evil and neutrality better.the 5th age kinds made them irrelavant

Agreed. Pile 5e mechanics on top of that (essentially every class having the option to be an arcane caster) and it looses the original flavor.

So Raistlin basically disrupted the cycle and killed all life when it was only the hourglass constellation? It's difficult to believe he didn't know how it worked or the futility of what he was attempting. He's my favorite character. Please make this make sense!

It’s not supposed to. In the Legends trilogy he was so focused on overthrowing the gods he never thought about the consequences of doing so. If you haven’t read the legends you really should!

Hello. I was working on a subclass for the Wizard Class with 5e. I never remembering reading about this. "Lunitari (loo-nuh-tah-ree) is the goddess of neutral magic, and is sponsor to the Order of the Red Robes. She is known to be a trickster by creating illusions to confuse people to amuse and entertain herself." Does anyone ever remember reading anything about her being a trickster? The DragonLance campaign and the Fandom page agree. Thanks for reading.
@DLSaga Жыл бұрын
The first mention of anything of this sort was from AD&D 2e Tales of the Lance boxed set: Lunitari is a vivacious young woman with a mischievous streak. It seems from that line, WotC extrapolated to trickster.

@@DLSaga Thanks for the feedback, and work citation! Lunitari is the daughter of Gilean, which it is said that she was born fully formed from his thoughts. She has neither brothers nor sisters, but two ambitious cousins in Solinari and Nuitari. You would think she would be more about Knowledge than the White Moon. But she could have his suppressed personality.

As a Member can I get the novels at a discount? I read them years ago but want to re-read from The Twins Chronicles to the current book (I think Dragons of Summer Flame was the last I read but I did read the War of Souls books) Just trying to figure out the best way to get the books even if they’re used
@DLSaga2 жыл бұрын
I do not sell the novels, so you would have to look elsewhere for those. I would suggest first, the library if you have one in your community. Second, check prices between Amazon and eBay for the novels you would like to get used or the lowest cost. Best of luck to you, I’m having a blast revisiting them.

hello. I'm going to be running a Dragonlance 5e campaign soon that has spell casters. At what spell level (goes from 1-9) should spell caster go take the test, or be considered renegades? I'm thinking when they get 3rd level spells, and they are doing high profile spells like fireball, they will be a high profile magic users. level 5 spells will surely be seen as renegades! Any advice would be appreciated.
@travisdonaldstanley64202 жыл бұрын
Bards, Arcane Trickers, Eldridge Knight, and Artificer might get by without taking the test if they pick spells that are low profile. Bards go up to level 9 so that is questionable.
@travisdonaldstanley64202 жыл бұрын
A sorcerer who gets their powers from innate abilities will need to stand tall in front of the order if they wish to survive. the Order of Robes will want to study them and see how they have such amazing magical abilities. Warlocks are fine. they get their lower from a patron or titan, or something.
@DLSaga2 жыл бұрын
3rd level is the cutoff. After that, they order will come looking for them.
@DLSaga2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how faithful you want to be to Dragonlance and what era you are playing in. During the War of the Lance era, there are no sorcerers. Everyone gets magic from the three gods of magic and anyone who is above 3rd level is hunted.
@travisdonaldstanley64202 жыл бұрын
@@DLSaga Thanks for the feedback! It would be 150 PC. So, Age of Might. The Order of Robes would be strong and have a wide reach.

I have mixed feelings about the "circuit' of magical energy. On the one hand, the whole "gods gaining power through worship thing" was very much a Forgotten Realms thing, and I'm a little annoyed to see it also used in Krynn. On the other hand, it's kind of interesting, and it gives a new dimension to Takhisis' machinations and explains why she wanted to be the only deity worshipped in Krynn. But, jumping back onto the first hand, the Queen of Darkness never needed that kind of motivation; she wanted to rule the mortals because that was what the Evil Gods had wanted to do since the beginning of time. And Takhisis herself embodied the Goldy Power of Control; enslaving people was who she was. Also, this now makes the gods' collective decision to remove themselves from the world after the Cataclysm seem kind of dumb; they were weakening themselves by giving the mortals no more reasons to worship them.

I stopped reading the novels after Legends so my knowledge of the Modern Magic of Krynn is nonexistent. Having just finished rereading The Legend of Huma for the 20th or so time in my 44 year old life, as much as I truly love that particular Dragonlance novel, it had always confused and baffled me that renegade mages who were not loyal to any of the 3 colored orders of magic were so much stronger. Galen Dracos evil mad renegade/leader of the forces of Tahkisis. Magius, childhood friend of Huma, and renegade of no allegiance to anyone but himself. Each of the Orders of Red, White, and Black have a head/leader. Yet, none could stop or come close to the power of these two renegades.. It literally wasn't even close. Conceptually, I understand that the orders place restrictions on their members, but it seemed to be a 5-10+ level or greater difference in the novel. 3 Renegades vs 12 Regulars and the result was a tie. Was it dramatization? Was it artistic license? Did this actually happen in a module and the DM just took liberties to make the main villain formidable?
@DLSaga3 жыл бұрын
It was ultimately artistic license as I understand it, that and being granted power directly from Takhisis rather than going through her son Nuitari. Renegades are not bound or limited to accepted norms, so those outside the orders are able to try new and dangerous things. That's my head cannon anyway.
@travisdonaldstanley64202 жыл бұрын
perhaps the renegades were unconstrained with magic in comparison to the Order of Robes. Sometimes the gods will imbue mortals with awesome power if they see potential. Huma was like a level 20 Fighter. look at Raistlin during the Age of Dispair. He was really strong. Granted, there was another factor. I haven't read Huma in Over 20 years.

So, I thought that magic on Krynn was strengthened via the phases of the moon (red, White and Black)

The Tinker Gnomes have learned how to build a porthole without using magic and the stargate looks allot like cern. Mina is simply a clone made by Takhisis to present the appearance of her death. Takhisis is not dead, she traveled to Asgard and stole the Sword of Odin. All the Planar Gods are unilaterally displeased with Krynn and its accomplices. This is because Dragon DNA is becoming too common among half breeds. Additionally Dragon-type magical items are far too common. After a 2000 Trial, the Planar Gods as the grand jury, convict the accomplices of Krynn for crimes against Nature and The Multiverse. This will dawn the 6th Age in Krynn. The Age of Light.

While I love Dragonlance lore, I was never a fan of the idea that all magic comes from the gods (in some way). Divine magic is for a cleric. This idea also made no sense as wizards were still casting spells during the time of darkness. The Towers of High sorcery supplement described it best - the magic of creation suffuses the world, and this is the power that wizards tap into.
@DLSaga5 ай бұрын
That’s fair. After the first cataclysm, the gods never left which is why magic worked for the Wizards of High Sorcery. After the second cataclysm when the gods did leave, they had to discover sorcery, the inherent magic of Krynn. So it makes sense to me, even if I don’t really like the age of mortals as much as the age of Despair.
@geraldwaldrop45985 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply! It’s nice to see you active on a video that I only realized was a couple years old after I added my comment. Lol Yeah, the age of despair and time of darkness really capture my interest. I am planning my next campaign in Dragonlance during this time. About 50 years prior to the war of the lance. I,like the idea that, since it’s been centuries, many generations since they disappeared, most people have forgotten about gods (except in a few myths) let alone having faith - save for a few like the elves, dwarves, and the knights of Solamnia, with strong, lasting traditions. The Orders of High Sorcery have no need for divine reverence either. They have respect for and traditions based on the moons as they still empower types of magic. But only ancient tales associate the moons with gods.
