They blamed OP because they were a bunch of kids who got roped into playing with one of their friends little brother. My guess is the main players were 15 year olds since OP says they were 12, I could be wrong but it's a safe guess. Clearly they weren't too pleased with having a 'little kid' with them from the start and were being as hostile as they could to drive him away as quickly as possible. I can also assume they are kids and lack experience because I personally take EVERY opportunity to describe Hellhounds and I know most DMs do too. The look of infernal beasts just set such a scene tone it's incredible and I doubt any seasoned DM would knock the option to draw upon that. Certainly seems like a 3.5 and/or Pathfinder 1e game following a much more 'rule of cool' thing aswell being that the entire cast seemed like edgy clowns way more than they should have been and the types of gear and how the DM ruled things. Overall this would be a pretty poor introduction for ANYONE getting into D&D.

I wouldn't call them hostile until the end. Just inexperience in how to introduce a new player. They expected too much and explain too little.

The edition was a point of contention in the original post as well. As it turns out, warlocks DID exist at the time. Whether or not DM had the book(s) for it is another story though.
@suruthebeast40652 жыл бұрын
@@TheMightyBattleSquid It does seem so but the timing is off. If the years presented are accurate, i'm not assuming they are but IF they are, then this story took place in 2007, one year before any official Warlock race existed as there was never an official Warlock in 3.5 edition, plenty of homebrews but nothing set in stone. So my guess was he heard something about the 4e Warlock and thought it was cool. Unless they were playing 4e but on the flip side of that the 'Witch' concept being a familiar based character was scrapped from 4e on and familiars took a back seat role with wizards as a class, useful for sure but no class NEEDS a familiar as he described it post 3.5. In the end it's jumbled mess of confusion and without having been there I don't have the context I need to discover anymore. Though with this now on my brain in hindsight, i'm wondering if just maybe (MAYBE) this dude made up the story for online clout because some of the discrepencies while possible are a bit strange... but again I wasn't there so I can't for sure say anything... tons of my d&d stories (horror or not) are hard to believe unless you were there such as my fighter in PF2E fist fighting a pit fiend 1v1.

Third story: Ripping up (or otherwise destroying) character sheets after a character died used to be a more common thing back in the 80ties/90ties, especially in the (then more common) groups that were focused more on hack and slay dungeon crawling than storytelling. We used to do that in one of my old groups, too, but it was a ritual we mutually agreed upon and more of a running joke (but it was connected with a rule that a player should not reuse a character (or an identically built clone) after they died in the game). Pushing that onto players unilaterally as a DM would not be OK for me. That guy generally seemed to be on a powertrip and enjoy intimidating his players. Also the "smiting" players for asking questions is the dumbest thing you could do as a DM, since players asking the right questions is basically how they engage with your plot (unless your plot and settings are so dull and devoid of any detail that there can't possibly be anything worthwhile to find out that you haven't just said in your 3 sentences of description ;-) ).

He plays a character that is the best type of chaotic random and makes everyone laugh. He couldve had the other players take their turns while op was catching up, and then, in a coup de grace, he could have just...not TPK'd them because op "took too long." He's the dm, if he saw they were doing rough he could have just not summoned more hellhounds that the others didnt know were planned to happen. The other players arent clean though, because THEY ALREADY KNEW IT WAS A HELLHOUND AND THEY KNEW WHAT THE SCENE LOOKED LIKE and yet didnt elaborate for dm.

Re: Adding new players: I find it best to have a potential new player (PNP) join for their first session as an observer so that they can get a proper feel for how _your_ game runs. Then join for a session or two but run various NPCs given to them by the DM -- for example as the Party makes it's way back to town after a dungeon slog, the PNP can run the tavern owner who will have their own secrets / have "quest information" to impart to the group. Now that they are familiar with the group the they can roll up a character that will fit in. Example NPCs to run: The bartender who is also a fence. The Potion Seller who is extra-planer in exile. The city guard who is on the take. The drunken and abusive bar patron who is the son of a high-ranking Lord. The Street urchin who is a wererat.

If there's a new player wanting to join my group, I do what you suggested, A one shot unrelated to the campaign to see how they are and if they would fit in the group. Just throwing a new player in a campaign where characters are fully established and mesh well together without them knowing the group dynamics or what would be expected of them is a bad idea. Mid campaign is no time to be introducing a new player to the group. It works for shows like Critical role with guest characters cause they are either friends of the cast, have played with them before, and know what is going on when they join the table. If the group likes the new player and are willing to have them join the campaign (after all it is the GROUP that decides, not one player) then the new player can watch for one session, or join during a downtime session so they can get the exposition they need or ask any questions to become part of the party, not just "This is new player, they are playing a class.... okay you're fighting a dragon annnnnnnnd GO!" That's no use for player or group. Never do this.

My negative introduction to TTRPGs is more of a hindsight thing. Me assuming their way of playing the game was 'normal' when it was actually just really toxic. VERY "player VS DM". Loads of house rules that made certain classes worse, or just plain bad. And a lot of bullying from other players now that I think about it. The final straw for me was the way another player viewed my character, which was essentially Jevil from Deltarune as a halfling wild magic sorcerer. He would always complain about how annoying the character was, even though nobody else seemed to have any problem with it. He would tell the guards at any gate/establishment that I was trouble, and to keep a close eye on me, even though I never committed any real crime. He would take items from me, which I was helpless to prevent. And would blame me for things that were simply beyond my control. The DM at the time would go on record saying how interesting my character was, and asked if he could use him as an NPC at some point, to which I agreed, so I know it's not 100% my fault. Either way, after the fifth week of walking in to, "Not THIS bastard again!" as the first thing I hear, I had enough, and just stopped showing up. "Well, it WAS your fault. You shouldn't have made such an annoying character. If you're spoiling the fun for someone else, then you are the problem." There. I said it myself so you don't have to.

All so that they can sadistically and cruelly mess with him and ruin his experience with DnD. In fact whenever we start wondering why people just don't leave these nightmare scenarios, they all always say the same thing "If you're wondering why I just didn't leave the group it was because it was the only gaming group in my area" that meer fact should give other players an idea that 'hey let's make every new player's experience the best one they'll have so that they stick with this game and make every other newbie fall in love with it the same way they did.' Stories like this should be the exception or not exist for such a niche market. But I guess that's what get gate kept the most, its like veteran DnD players don't want the game to be more popular than it is so that it remains justtheirs..
