I had a GM who used an X card... and in a similar manner, it never got used. If you tried, you got peer pressured into accepting a slightly toned down version of what happened (if you were lucky). We tried talking to this guy so many times about issues we were having with certain content (nothing nearly as bad as this last story), and he would promise to keep it in mind and tone things down... only to start testing limits slowly until it ramped back up into uncomfortable territory. The X-card was always on the table... but it was always uncomfortable to use. We, uh, grew up eventually. My partner and I, plus the two players we brought into that group, realized how... unsetting the guy's behaviour was, and after a long group chat, we decided to step away from the game.

Oh, I DID have a creep at my table - it was in my second group. He was a kid, younger than me (but not too young, as he kept musing fondly on the time he visited the "window district" - i.e. the red light district - of Amsterdam). His characters were ALWAYS after anything even remotely female looking, whether it be a friend, an enemy or a wall. Yes, a wall - the GM had jokingly put a female posterior sticking out of a castle wall (he was kind of weird himself) and the first thing creep's rogue had done was drop trou and go to town on that innocent wall. We had to drag him away by the ankles, still sans breeches. A while later, we got to a locked door, we turned to the rogue to do his job and... gone. We backtracked, and sure enough there he was, pants around his ankles, working on the damn wall. From then on we had to keep an eye on him constantly, because the very second we got distracted... you guessed it, he rushed off to "pay his homages" to his brick-and-mortar paramour. Another time, we were playing Deadlands, and he chose to play a priest. A CATHOLIC priest. Now, in Deadlands religious characters have incredible magical powers, as long as they stick to the tenets of their faith; so, what does he do? In the very first FIVE MINUTES of the campaign he declares that he's making a beeline for the town brothel and "leaving his mark" on every single girl in there. We reminded him of a catholic priest's vow of FREAKIN' CHASTITY, but no. He had his way with twenty or so ladies of the night, and we had to lug along a completely useless character. He was even worse as a GM: aside from forgetting every single detail of the settings he was using, he tried to have all of us players go berserk after every female, and whined when we didn't. Once our characters were tailing a NPC, who had got inside an inn. We got the room in front of our target, and creep said: "The innkeeper likes you, and offers you a prostitute each." We said no thanks. "He says he'll give them to you half price!" still no. "He's going to offer them to you for free!" Nnnnope. So what he did? He had ALL the prostitutes in town form a line for our target's room, in order, I suppose, to show us what we were missing. Poor mr. Target ended up banging every single one of those ladies. On the plus side, he conceded that we wouldn't have any problem following the target the following day, since he was sleepless, sore, tired and dehydrated. ...We were kind of forgiving with him, because 1) he was young, and 2) he clearly had the worst case of blue balls since the invention of bowling. Dude was obsessed! Then again, none of us was female, thankfully...

They're looking for you. They've got survivor guilt, so they're just going to take you into the bush and teach your a lesson about the crime of heresy.

You know, these stories always astound me. I started playing D&D in 1978. The only gaming group I ever played in that included anything sexual was a one-shot where to players were dating, so their characters were fooling around, too. I cannot count the number of different groups I've played in. Am I just lucky that I've never had this gross sexy stuff going on in games where I have played or run? Is this stuff really that common? Is this a newer phenomenon?

I don't think it's a newer phenomenon, but I also don't think it's terribly common. I've been playing for a couple of decades, including the dreaded and awkward high school years, and only gone so far as the fade-to-black once. The player, distinctly unsatisfied with his nympho sexbomb only getting made fun of by the other players, the characters, and the NPCs without the payoff, lost interest in trying to get her in bed anyone he could and the rest of the game proceeded normally. But stories of this sort of degeneracy go back to just about the dawn of D&D.

The neckbeards were out in force today. At least the first and third stories didn't go on forever - the weirdos were eliminated quickly. (Why does it always have to be catgirls? Have the minds of a generation been corrupted by bizarre anime?) As for the second, the DM was into the weird sexual stuff way too much, but he provided an easy out. Why didn't the OP use the X card??? It seems like this DM might have backed off if the OP had used that card. That said, the fact that this DM used the X card in the first place could have been seen as an indication that there would be questionable stuff in this game, but I think having some sort of signal like this is not a bad idea. It isn't only sexual stuff that can make people extremely uncomfortable. People sometimes have severe phobias, such as a fear of spiders or snakes, that could be triggered in a game. The lesson in these stories and the countless others like them is that it is important to set boundaries when joining a game, to communicate those boundaries clearly, to not join a game if those boundaries are incompatible with the other people there, and to leave a game immediately if those boundaries are crossed.

Wanting to use the X-Card system is, in and of itself, a warning sign. If you're so mentally fragile that you're incapacitated by the description of things encountered while adventuring, so lacking in self-awareness that you can't mention them ahead of time, and so weak that you can't manage it long enough to ask the GM to stop, maybe RPGs just aren't for you.

The first story is a rare example of how you're supposed to handle that sort of player. Well done to her for that one. And yes, yes he was a creep - the time to announce you're into it for getting your rocks off is before agreeing to a game. As a GM, before getting to the point where he'd declared it, I'd already have put a bit of work into a rough framework for the early campaign. Discovering he just wanted to ERP with a waifu would have rendered that a waste of time. The second story... the poster herself is throwing out a couple of red flags (androphobe, announces character's sexuality without any apparent need), but while I just wouldn't invite her back... _holy fuck_ that GM is a Communist parade. Why did it take her that long to realize it? For that matter, why did the other players tolerate that shit? Another example of why this "X card" nonsense is an idiotic idea. The kind of shy people who supposedly need a tool to communicate are the last ones to ever use it because everybody can intuitively recognize that the entire concept is actually the opposite of effective communication. Having a "stop all discussion and placate me right now and I don't ever owe you any explanation, even to clarify the problem" button is an inherently unreasonable fiat to invoke. Anybody with a functioning brain can see that and meek people will be the least willing to ever push the button. I'm entirely convinced that the concept was actually designed by the kind of blue haired grievance fetishists who believe that throwing hair trigger screaming tantrums is "empowered" in order to normalize and spread their own immature behavior. 2nd story. OP, you expressed a belief that all men are like this and all it takes is a glance to trigger them. This is wrong. Most people do not behave in such a manner. If you are encountering a lot of such people it means that you are doing something that draws the bad apples of society. I had to learn this lesson the hard way myself. I'm autistic, and in my younger years had to deal with many bullies. The problem, it turned out, wasn't that everyone around me was cruel. It was that my own overly serious nature and lack of humor was signaling all the bad apples to come pick on the easy target. It took over half my life to understand and fix this. Since developing a sense of humor the negative interactions have vanished. I am NOT excusing the actions of the bad apples, just telling you that they aren't the norm and altering your own behavior can impact the type of people that seek you out. I don't know what you personally may need to change, a good therapist may help you figure it out. But if you can identify what draws the unwelcome attention and change it you'll have fewer bad interactions and gradually feel better about people as a whole. I can promise from experience that this will make you so much happier about life. I wish you well.

A good point, though one that a lot of YT will jump on. The phrase "like they have a right to persue me" gives the impression that OP reacts negatively to any attention from men. The line between acceptable and not isn't interest, because men are not (nor is anyone) mind readers. It's if they won't take a simple "I'm not interested.". It reminds me of people who will say "I have a boyfriend/SO" when someone so much as greets them. I could be wrong of course, but the odds aren't exactly one-sided to me.

@@SetzerII exactly right. Creeps and bullies are always out there, looking for signals that identify their preferred victims. They are responsible for their own behavior. We, meanwhile, are responsible for the signals we produce, both consciously and subconsciously. This doesn't mean that those accosted are "asking for it" but it does mean that we have options for taking back control in our lives. If successful, then the undesirables disperse back into the crowds. When that happens you'll realize there were never as many of them as you thought. There just seemed like more because they were clustering around you. It's a very freeing thought, realizing that most people aren't out to get you. Always remember that how we present ourselves sends a message about who we are to other people, which they in turn use to determine if/how they'll interact with us. If you don't like the attention you're getting then take an honest look at the messages you're sending and make adjustments. Because, as you said, people aren't mind readers.

I'll be honest it feels like op never spoke up to the dm and only continued to interact with the game. The problem is that by continuing to interact in the game, even though her character turned down the advances and creepy stuff, she was encouraging the behavior. I hate saying this because it sounds victim blamey but OP needed to say out of character "This is not okay" and if the DM kept going on, leave. Honestly if she was so bothered by this she should have just left, I know it can be very hard and people will sometimes put up with crap just for companionship but when something makes you uncomfortable you need to leave to protect yourself. Ok, so that kind of in-game flirting is really dumb, and the specific way the DM did it was just weird. That said, she never said no until the end. Only yes means yes, but only no means no. While the DM in the aroace story is 100% in the wrong and a mega creep the fact that OP not only didn't complain or touch the X but also kept going along with seduction attempts really doesn't help the situation. My breaking point on this was telling the female dwarf she would sleep with them after all the other creepy shit the DM had done. JUST BLOODY REFUSE!

Second... Look, I've been out for a long time and don't give a damn about your orientation, or your PC's. I have never given PCs time to get in naughty RP. The GM is a creep, and should have no table. While the X-card is a blazing red flag to me, but it should have been used in this case. The player who wanted to move on from the orgy was the hero of the game. Creep... Yeah. Kicked, reported to the VTT's admins, and maybe a restraining order. SOs are NOT welcome at my table, and there should be an open season on them. All of these games have the same problem- people who don't know how to be adults. 1st Commandment- thou shalt not creep or perv at this table. I've had one- he got invited to leave. There was a bad one in my college club the year after I graduated- he'd grabbed a young lady after a session. It went... badly for him.

On the one hand... yes, that's absolutely correct. That kind of thing is why I wouldn't have invited her back after maybe the first, definitely not after the second session. On the other hand... with ERP, you're not looking for the -victims- involved people telling you "No, stop that" to stop. You're looking for their enthusiastic participation. If they're not actively into it, you're being a creep. It's really common for people, especially weak people and/or people from certain cultures, to be all but unable to directly refuse something, especially in that sort of setting.

I hate how people say their characters are "a-sexual" because they're too scared to say they don't want to RP romantic stuff. If someone's not okay with that, don't bother trying to make up a bullshit excuse, just don't play with them. This story is a prime example. The "eating the vomit" thing clearly turned OP off from romantic RP with this DM (at well it should; that's disgusting), so she not only said her character was "a-sexual" but even used a redundant, nonexistent term like "a-romantic" to make sure her point got across. She should have just stopped playing with this little shit, but she was clearly too scared to just leave. However, I will say that complimenting someone on their new haircut isn't a red flag, it's just being nice. Additionally, if that Filipino girl was fine with using the term "colored", telling her not to say it, even though it fit the time period, because it made someone else uncomfortable, was sacrificing her fun and immersion for the sake of another player's enjoyment; they should have found a compromise, instead.

This might depend much moreso on where you live. In certain cities here in America if you so much as look at someone while being a woman, that indicates to them that you’re fair game to them to run up and start harassing you for your number. My wife literally lived in a major city for 2 weeks on a program and had some weirdo in the subway hitting on her and getting all up in her face twice in her short time there. It’s bullshit when you consider that you may not actually be able to SEE a qualifiable difference between a cat-caller and a regular social interaction coming from a man until you’ve had time to get home and remove yourself from the situation.

Story 1: dude was upfront with what he wanted so I cannot say it is a horror story, per se. Some people like ERP and romantic drama, so meh? 🤷 it is a horror story if he tried to pull it during game without asking, but he asked and sought consent. Weird guy, but not a creep. Story 2: the x card makes anything the dm tried and was not called on implied consent. The fact op did trade sexual favors for magic arrows makes it full willing concent that opened up the door to ERP. The op also flirts with npc's on the regular, so from the dm's point of view, he probably thought she was into romantic/erp. This is really only a horror story if the dm can read minds as the OP says she is not out to him and is partaking is sexual role play (flirting with npc's and participating in an orgy). Dm asks to fade to black or not too; consent is in full play, and OP was given npc's to interact with sexually because she had in the past. Seems like the dm was giving the people what they wanted; there was a male character that tried to impregnate everything female who was a PC too. Not a fan of this sort of sexualized content, but it appears to be above board as far as concent. Creepy stuff from 2nd story worth mentioning: Furbulgs prior to 5e were 12 foot tall Irish Giants, so the "orgy damage" is cringe. The perverted squirrel is pure anime refrence; always bad. The dwarf hitting on a bound prisoner is not consent, even if the prisoner says "yes." These are really bad for most games, but the dm took no for an answer and there was an x card. Third story: classic "nice guy" story. That is annoyingly common.

Totally agree, I thought those parts of each story stood out and sounded off as well. 2nd story in particular, they plainly say dm has a get out of jail free card in the form of a paper you can touch to stop anything no questions asked but they refused to use it, even as they were pulling their hair out mentally, yet that's somehow dm's fault. I wouldn't personally go that far in that direction in any game as this dm did, even if I had consent, but that's just me and other tables are allowed to go as far as they all agree to. The fact that op keeps hopping back and forth between "my character feels no physical attraction" and "I will offer my body for literally any upgrade to my characters" is a weird double standard imo.

Um. No. If you're going to be creating those kinds of situations, you need to be able to pay attention to people's actual comfort levels. Just because someone plays along doesn't mean they're actually comfortable. Even moreso if you're a guy presenting these scenarios to female players. That main story 100% reads like a male DM creepily pushing sexual content on a female player, who plays along awkwardly because she doesn't want to rock the boat/lose friends by setting boundaries.

The dm did not have this context, and the OP says she willingly entered into sexual content (the orgy) and routinely flirted with npc's to get things she wanted in game. From the outside looking in, it seems like she is into sexual themes in her game as she is instigating some of these social encounters. I will point out that everything anyone actually points out they are uncomfortable the dm stops. I mean, I am not going to hold the fact the dm is not a mind reader against him as OP is explicitly not communicating her discomfort in a lot of these situations.
