Man, I love the internet and smart, kind people like you who share your knowledge. Same thing just happened to my 2000 xterra. After I watch this I went and looked and there was the small broken plastic button on the floor and all I had to do was find something that would push that button down. Thanks for the great video

Aware that this is an older post but this is for anyone that comes across this video for same reason as I, first off, thank you for posting this video, was very helpful with the actual visual aspect and location. For the actual cause of brake lights staying on and the OEM part for this, to further help anyone (if someone else already stated the same, apologies, no time to read all) it's a brake pedal stopper, part #46584-5P010. My Xterra is an 04, may be same for all first gen but can't say for sure. It's just a small rubber or polyurethane grommet type piece that can dry rot over time, it's flat with a smaller raised portion on the flat surface, usually pointed end, so that pressing into the hole, locking or "clicks" in place. Wanted to post a photo here but don't see where to do so, if even possible. Plan to post on my channel as I'm needing to replace this piece on my 04 Xterra. Thanks to your details, now I'm pretty sure I know where to go to install this piece. 👍

Thanks for the video. My '02 did this and killed the battery. Before I knew the issue, I bought a new battery and luckily my wife saw the brake lights were on with an hour of the replacement. I watched your video and superglue 2 nickles for each switch. Now it's fixed and my cruse control works again (hasn't worked in a year)!

Same thing just happened in my 03 Xterra. I ordered two stoppers (2/$4 on Amazon). Removed the fuse, started car, and holding down the brake pedal with my left hand centered and pressed the plug into the switch pin with my right hand, then gently released brake to pop the plug into place. It was easier doing it this way than trying to press the stopper into the hole because it's so small I kept dropping it before I could press it in. I did this for both the cruise control and the brake light switch pins/ stoppers. If you're not removing the dash, it has to mostly be done "by feel." Thanks for this helpful video!

There's little plastic pegs that go in those holes that break and fall out. Good idea replacing them with bolts that will never break. As others have commented my battery went dead because of this. Thanks to your video I know that the other switch is for the cruise control and will easily be able to fix that too, I'm actually glad the break light peg fell out now.

For those of us that use OEM parts to fix this problem, the simplicity of installing the replacement "Rubber Stopper" (Part # 46584-5P010) is so obvious that it escaped even me. It is virtually impossible to get your fingers into a position to install the replacement parts. On line information wasn't much of a help. THEN..it struck me! So simple! 1)Tie a piece of string to the new part. I used 80# test braided fishing line 2) Push down the brake pedal. 3) thread the string through the "Rubber Stopper" hole. 4) Pull the part into position with the string. Keep tension on the string (you can be sure the "Rubber Stopper" is in position by feeling it with your finger or visually) 5) Release the brake pedal, Keep tension on the string. 6) Pull back the brake pedal. The "Rubber Stopper" will snap into place. 7) cut off the string. DONE! I screwed around for more that an hour trying to use needle nose pliers, tape , glue, pins. whatever. The space is so tight nothing worked. then I hit on the string idea. In 30 seconds the part was installed. HINT: Be sure to give yourself plenty of string. I used a piece about 12 inches long. Good Luck!

Hey guys, turns out it’s the switch that is out in my 03 Xterra. Bought a new switch and plugged that into the wiring and it works! Only thing is, I cant figure out how to take the old switch out and put the new one in its place. What size socket do I need to take out the lock nut on the firewall side of the bracket? Mr. Malott, THANKS A MILL FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!! Just perfect. This is my dilemma this wk and in my dismay, I'm simply disconnecting my positive battery terminal temporally once parked (prophylaxis to drain of new battery) till tomorrow when I can get parts and troubleshoot. You've done the troubleshooting for me!! The part that fits in the hole is likely a plastic bolt that I might obtain from the dealership as a last-ditch effort....assumption based on recovered part on floor mat before discovering effect on brake lights. I will google Nissan schematics to find the part name for reference. Thanx so much for sharing this.

I had the same problem on a 2001 Nissan Maxima . the part that broke is this 46584-5P010 (Rubber-Stopper) for the 2001 maxima. its very common thing that happens, I did a temp hack until I got the part. with a penny and double stick foam tape.
@dmalott09082 жыл бұрын
Yeah, happened in my Infiniti as well. You'd think they would use a more permanent feature for this than plastic/rubber. Honestly I'm not sure why there needs to be a hole in the plate for the button on the switch anyway.
@300ZCR8ZEE5 жыл бұрын
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but if you put plastic or metal bolts in the holes then make sure the bolts are very short about half inch in lenth. Otherwise if the bolts are to long you can't slide the pin back in on the brake pedal .I think the right size door panel plastic fasteners work best though.
@dmalott09085 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice! I showed the bolt I used, but didn't mention it needed to be a short one for the reason you mention. I think someone mentioned early on it was originally a rubber stopper that plugs that hole, but I was unaware of this at the time. I would recommend replacing with that unless you can't find one. Thanks for the feedback.

No, if the bushing fell out and left a hole that's the issue, not the switch. If you have a bad switch, unplug it first and then unscrew it. The wires will twist as you unscrew making it difficult or impossible to unscrew if still connected.

Many Nissan dealers keep the pedal stop pad (which is what the part is called) in stock. Dorman HELP! parts used to have them, as well, but I'm not sure if they still do? In a bind, you have to so what you need to do, but I would rather just use the correct part than rigging something up. Those pads will usually last well over 100,000 miles. I just replaced the original on my 03 Frontier and it has 230,000 miles on it.

Not sure it's a good idea to be adding bolts where none existed...to do what ? You didn't really mention what that intention was. If the switch tested electrically good when you pulled it out and pushed the spring-loaded button, then the spring inside the switch is probably getting weaker, meaning time to mechanically adjust the position in or out of the whole switch in the brake pedal assembly, by adjusting the big nut that threads the switch into the brake pedal....wouldn't even need to remove or unplug anything...just adjust the nut til the brake light goes out.... But thanks for the video...I'm having the same issue just today....so this should save a little sweat out in this 90° summer sun ! 😱

Thanks for the good feedback Jeff. Actually, the original stoppers are plastic/rubber and they totally disintegrated which is why I found an alternate solution to fill the hole. @@dmalott0908 ...thanks for your feedback too ! 🙂...it wasn't clear that there were rubber or nylon "stoppers" (another vid called them grommets) that the switch buttons push against...now I understand your bolt idea. This design hasn't changed in probably 75 years...every car I've ever seen had that little plate on the top end of the brake pedal pushing on the switch... ...but what HAS changed is Nissan putting holes in that plate and putting those "stoppers" in the holes for the button to contact...WHY ? Every pedal assembly I've had to do this to was just a solid steel plate that switch pushed on, I wonder why Nissan thought it necessary to add holes and stoppers, it just needlessly adds another variable and another piece to break and replace. 🙄 I haven't gotten under there and looked yet, but I wonder if another option besides adding bolts or finding stoppers is just to cut a piece of sheet aluminum or nylon, etc the same size as that plate, pull out the stoppers if still there so that it's just s flat plate with holes, and attach the added plate by wrapping with electrical tape around the whole plate assembly ?...maybe more work than just replacing the stoppers I guess...but would put the design back to that 75 year old, unbreakable "solid" contact plate with no holes ?

I don't have the factory part number, but this is what I found you can likely pick up at a local parts store or order online. Dorman part number is # 74015. Picture of the part if you follow the link below. bit.ly/2EDhwWR

Sorry, not sure what's causing that issue.

It was the plastic buttons that were in the two holes, they are cheap looking very small button shape plastic pieces, the two holes were your problem missing/fell out the plastic buttons. you installed bolts, that's all you needed to do the first place one hole is for the Brake they other cut out for cruise... Easiest test is to turn key on, emergency brake fully depressed without foot on brake see if shifter moves, it should if you didn't have anything in those holes.. Found this simple test on youtube, cause Daughters 2003 Xterra cruise control just stopped working, found one of the buttons..

2000 xterra .... WTF kinda engineering is that? sure was easier than weaseling the switch out though. luckily i had some small hole caps in my plumbing parts box, it just snapped right in. Finding bits of the plastic plug on the floormat was a giveaway.

Excellent idea. Hadn't thought of that, but just about anything will work it seems. As long as it plugs the hole.

Every vid shows a truck with automatic transmission. Those plugs fall out of 5-speed models too and the extra pedal makes for even tighter working conditions. Easier than bolts is Super Glue a coin or two over the hole in the brake pedal lever. Everything on my '03 Frontier XE has been a bitch to replace except wheels, battery and windshield wipers. Will trade this pos in on a real truck next week. With a clutch, there isn't enough room for my feet which sometimes results in accelerator pedal being pushed while pushing brake pedal. No more Nissan junk for me EVER!
