In this video, I show you how I would wire an LED or Incandescent brake light circuit with two different style brake switches. One is a hydraulic switch, and one attaches to the brake pedal. Whether you have a hotrod, car, truck, motorcycle, ATV, dirt bike, side by side, or go cart, this basic brake light circuit will get you started with some rear lights. There are many different methods of wiring brake lights and brake light switches, but I prefer to wire them using a relay, because I feel like it is a safest method of wiring the circuit. Below is a list of the relays, brake switches, fuses, the incandescent and LED 1157-style bulbs, 1157 style bulb sockets, and a few other things that I used to make the circuit work properly.
Items used in the turn signal circuit (You may not need to buy in these quantities, but I did.)
🔗 5 Pack of 5-pin Bosch Style Relays - amzn.to/2OfiwXT
🔗 10 Pack of Fuse holders - amzn.to/3cU4CoD
🔗 Hydraulic Brake Switch - amzn.to/3jZnW5u
🔗 Brake Pedal Light Switch - amzn.to/3ze6aSN
🔗 4 Pack of LED Bulbs (1157 style) amzn.to/3gcNV8G
🔗 6 Pack of 1157 Bulb Sockets - amzn.to/3jtztJU
🔗 Universal Fuse Panel - amzn.to/3z0CFDI
🔗 10 Pack of 1157 NON-LED Bulbs (old style bulbs) - amzn.to/3a1Wa4N

I'm redoing a Honda super cub and this will make things so much easier. It's a 6 volt system and the conversion to 12 volt is very pricey. Now, I'll leave the 6 volt setup, not use the charging, and just run a 12 volt battery to all my lights. An 8 AH will run more than long enough for led turn signals and a small led headlight. Thanks for this tutorial, it's really well done.

the way i understand the mechanical brake switch construction (in this case the nc spst design) is as such - the button is a nylon post on a spring, the spring is housed in the narrower end of the switch, the post passes thru a divider, on the opposite end of that nylon post, in the wide end of the switch, is an un-wired contact point, a copper washer. when you brake the switch is at rest and that washer is pulled (due to the spring expanding) against the dividing wall which makes up the spring housing, on the face of this divider is a split copper washer, each half of which serves as a contact point for a single wire post on the wide end... or at least thats how id build one... but theres more than 1 way to skin a cat.

@WiringRescue

First, I’d determine what the two switches do and decide whether you need both of them or not. If you don’t, then just stop using one of them and wire it as described in the video. If you do need that second switch for something, like making an automatic stickshift transmission work or something, then you’ll need to sort that out separately. Either way, I’m cheering for you and glad to see you found the video helpful!

Painless Wiring makes a simple kit to do this job. Turn signals and brake lights wired the proper way and not running the brake signal through the tail lamp filaments. You can run 4 relays, one for each signal light and feed the brake light signal through the normally closed contacts of the rear light relays. Feed from flasher on 87, brake signal feed on 87a, output to light on 30

Sadly it is gone. I had gotten to a point where I had to invest a lot of money to make it pass a state inspection, and the car + the time it would take was not worth it to me. It would have been a deeply bad financial investment. However, it has sold a couple times since then and it is now in the hands of the grandson of a woman who had it in the 1980’s. So it seems to be in good hands. I also started a different channel specifically for my car projects, because this one has unintentionally ended up as a wiring channel. @WiringRescue

Most motorcycles have two brake switches. One for the hand brake and one for the foot brake. Sometimes springs are missing or worn out on the foot brake causing the switch to activate. If you unplug each switch, you can determine which switch is causing the brake light to turn on. Once you know which one, then you can test the switch with an ohmmeter or test light to see if it is working properly. Good luck and let me know how it works out!

Hi! Excellent video! You do an amazing job of explaining how to do this wiring job. I have a 1956 Ford Victoria Car. The current tail light wiring is as follows. There is a black wire that goes from passenger taillight, T’s off to the license plate light, goes to driver side tail light then to the headlight switch. All 3 lights turn on with the headlight switch. There is a green line on driver side taillight that activates the turn signal. There is a ted line on the passenger side taillight that activates the turn signal on it. My question is what am i missing to make the brake lights turn on? It’s missing those wires. I converted the front brakes to disc and will be using a pressure switch like you used to activate the brake lights. Hopefully i gave you all info you need to give me a solution. Thank you very much in advance! Eddie

@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddie! Check out this video - it may help make sense of what I’m about to say - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6DCmmxmZpuiZ5I Your turn signals and brake lights likely share the same wires. I don’t have a wiring diagram for your car handy, but I would bet that your brake lights go through your turn signal switch. So you just need to find those wires under the dash (if they still exist) and connect your hydraulic brake switch into them. Definitely check out the video I linked to, because it shows exactly what you’re after! Thanks for watching and good luck with the 56 Ford! It sounds like a car I would love!

@10:10 if you dont mind my ask. why did you use two Flasher Relays? could you not have used a single flasher relay for the Left+Right signal + the Hazzard lights or does the Hazzard require its own flasher. I initially thought the hazard switch was daisy-chaining the two LR bulbs together and using the same flasher till I noticed the second in use. Excellent video btw very useful esp as I'm wiring/wired my entire chassis & engine.
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
Generally hazards are available for use all the time, even when the car is off. Turn signals are only available for use when the ignition switch is turned on. Because of this design, many cars use two flashers, one for turn signals and the other for hazards. It’s possible to do it with one flasher, but you’ll either have turn signals that work with the car off, or hazards that only work with a key on.

Hello, just to be correct- the relay is not actually necessary, it's just there for safety. I am using a unimax switch that can handle way more than 12 volts. I am assuming the white and yellow wires would be spliced instead to remove the relay. Thanks!
@WiringRescue

You are totally correct that it’s used for safety. Imagine if you have 4 brake light bulbs that each draw 2.5 amps when lit and you are not using a relay. The brake light switch may only be rated for 7 amps. So when the 4 bulbs light up, 10 amps go through the switch, which can only handle 7 amps, and now your switch is broken, melted, or on fire. That’s why I prefer using relays for things. It allows a low amperage rating switch to control a larger load in a safe manner. :)

Generally people use two filament bulbs for something like that. Each filiment is a different wattage, so you would use the lower wattage filament for the low-light and the higher wattage for the brighter brake lights.

My hydraulic brake switch has two screws instead of the flat spade type. Does it matter which wire goes to either screw
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
It should not matter which wire goes to each terminal. It will work either was if you have it connected to a relay.

So what would you have to do to change a normally closed brake light switch to a normally open brake light switch? Different master requires the different switch. That is the reason for the change.

Actually the easier installation of a brake light switch might be to trip the microswitch arm (NO or NC) with the brake caliper cassette at the wheel. Can you think of a good way to hold it in the proper orientation (??zip ties??)?

hi jeramy, why is that when i press on the brakes, the turn signal does not flash on either side
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 4 ай бұрын
It’s tough to diagnose things over the internet. My best guess is that the brakes are sending power to your light bulbs, and making them light up. So when you turn your turn signals on, they cannot make the bulb flash because the bulbs are already getting power 100% of the time from the brake switch. The turn signal wants the bulb to lose power intermittently and it can’t because your brakes are feeding it the power when the turn signal is pulsing off.

You can ignore that second flasher on the top. It was left over from something else I was trying. If you want to wire hazards and turn signals, check this out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/op_Lfqtjm9OIo6s. You can add the brake circuit to that and it all should work really well.
