What I love about g14 and kotm is that godzilla struggles against the mutos so seeing him fell down after the fight did make you worried but made the ending impactful. For godzilla kotm, godzilla struggled against ghidorah in Antarctica and failed to beat him when he is superchared and got constanly wrecked by ghidorah in which he needed mothras help and the humans which helped godzilla FINALLY beat ghidorah. So seeing him actually become king of the monsters felt impactful.

I like the new wave of realization that fans took on the Anguirus and Gigan scene. Back then most people thought he ran in to Gigan because he was just dumb and didnt realize he had a whole buzzsaw in his stomach, but if you like actually watch the movie, Godzilla was suffering from the combo of the towers beams and Ghidorahs assault, and Anguirus was trying his hardest to run to his aid. Gigan was always blocking him, so he was just standing on the sidelines. After time passes, Anguirus couldn't bear to see his friend dying while he stood there doing nothing, and runs foward regardless of the consequences, and got his head cut open in the process. It really shows how hopeless the fight was at that point Glad you clarified that

It honestly came across as Anguirus doing a charge to impale Gigan with his head spikes. Gigan thinking quickly turns back, so anguirus only took the saw blade. He seemed to have taken a calculated risk and failed. If it was regular human battle it be like if someone with a spear charge only person to sidestep stabbing their opponent.

Finally, I found someone else who understands! This movie is the reason Anguirus is my favourite kaiju second to Godzilla himself and I think Monsterverse Godzilla desperately needs a dynamic like this in the next film preferably a newborn Anguirus that Godzilla bonds with due to his late predecessor's bond ( KoTM Easter egg would then be given context)
@ZillaTheTegu

Exactly! Its why Angy is such a great friend to Godzilla. He knew he couldnt beat Gigan, he knew trying to take on that buzz saw would just end in pain... and he did it anyway to try to help his friend.

I’m also fairly certain Gigan side stepped JUST enough to get Angie where it hurt. Anguirus was just charging forward and Gigan stopped him and got a kick out of seeing him bleed. If you look closely, you actually can see Gigan actually puts himself in front of Anguirus’ path

7:30 You're right on the nose with that one. Godzilla is still a living creature who can bleed and I think his "King of the Monsters" title only worsens the idea that he is unstoppable, he can't be defeated (it feels like a curse more than anything now). This gives newer fans the impression that he can never lose or rather is not supposed to, giving us people who complain when he does. It's also seems like that's the only thing he has going for him since the last two Monsterverse entries didn't give him the same treatment he received in 2014 and 2019. 10:05 This is why I and many others love Gigan so much. He was a true menace that used brutal weaponry to defeat Godzilla and is one of his worse match ups yet. A close combat fighter that uses long blades? Godzilla can't block any of that with his tiny arms. I really hope we get Gigan in the Monsterverse soon and that they do him justice by giving us one of the most gory fight scenes Legendary Godzilla has ever faced.
@DMan1954
@DMan1954 3 ай бұрын
Yeah. They dropped the ball with Godzilla imo. The Alpha concept is so furry core at this point it’s embarrassing. The “King” status almost doesn’t even matter because they treat him like a “God” who can do no wrong and will always win in the end. They need to learn how to raise the stakes. That starts with stronger screenplays and more risks taken with Godzilla. They need him to get brutalized before the final battle so that it means something. If we aren’t worried Godzilla will lose, they have written a bad fight scene.

This has always been one of my favorite Godzilla movies, for pretty much all the reasons you have pointed out. Its what cements Godzilla as the King of the Monsters for me. Not because he is the most powerful, but because of his fighting spirit and determination. Even in the face of impossible odds, Godzilla will never give up. Godzilla will take on any challenge with everything he has. He doesnt back down or give in. Godzilla is king because of his unbreakable will.

This film was always in my top 5. Always though, why his partner(don’t know how to spell his name) was used when I knew even as a kid, was not going to be much, if any help at all. Poor little guy, always giving his all, never a coward, but never getting a win by himself. Realizing that how much of a beatdown G gets too, it sets up G making a Rocky like comeback, gives you that definitive to stand up and cheer, to say, “yeah, now you’re really gonna get it!!” Take that you big robot chicken! Great movie!

Yeah, I very much dislike when stories have Godzilla defeat an enemy in the past and have said enemy come back in the present to fight him as it takes away the tension, especially in the latest Monsterverse installments as much as I like them. King Ghidorah was understandable as it was established that they were unique and ancient rivals to one another and that the events of KOTM was their proper rematch but for Kong and Skar King, felt very lackluster and not completely satisfying on Godzilla's end. To be fair, Kong has the advantage since this was a rematch built up for 60 years after the original King Kong vs Godzilla came out but terms of in-universe, they don't have any real buildup and I don't even need to bring up Skar King; he deserves to have a lot more menace and stakes as the villain.
@DMan1954
@DMan1954 3 ай бұрын
The goofy part is, The MonsterVerse is so over reliant on that trope, that every single primary Godzilla enemy is an ancient rival he’s already faced. The only Kaiju he fights for the first time are ones like Scylla. Ironically, if you count the comics and novelizations as canon, even Scylla and Tiamat are enemies he’s already defeated. The MonsterVerse is allergic to having compelling stakes for Godzilla.
@treyrex5987
@treyrex5987 3 ай бұрын
@@DMan1954 Oh yeah! I completely agree that the Monsterverse really does lack giving Godzilla some proper tension to his battles or just his character's story in general. The whole ancient rivalry thing has been going on for years and it really needs to stop for the next film. I'll give the Mutos and Muto Prime some credit as they technically aren't ancient enemy to Godzilla like Ghidorah or Skar King and are more so predators/prey of his species as a whole but I can see the gaps in logic in that idea and it really is just my personal headcanon to justify at least them not being "ancient rivals". Everybody else is fair game though, lol. 😆

As a kid I remember renting the vhs for this movie at my local blockbuster. I remember being so scared that Godzilla was getting beat up so and possibly die I started to cry. This movie was a tough watch for me as a kid. Now as an adult I get to watch it just for fun. I don’t care what anyone says I love this movie. Gigan is one of the most unique interesting looking kaijus ever. I just love how he looks, I like his FW design as well but I prefer the showa design better. Not to mention he made Godzilla bleed before Mecha-Godzilla came and made Godzilla bleed harder. Man, did he had one sick twisted personality. And you’re so right about what you said about Godzilla being slightly op in the monsterverse. Because there is never a sense of danger that he could lose or die. Having an unbeatable protagonist can be boring while I know others like it. I prefer when a protagonist loses and gets beat up because it shows they are not invincible. That’s why I hope in the next Monsterverse film since it is going to be more focused on Godzilla, that Godzilla loses badly to a titan so that way he comes back stronger to have a rematch. I was hoping that Godzilla would fight Shimo the first time in GxK, lose and gives him a reason to evolve to have another rematch but it never happened. Anyway, great job on this video.

I hate it when protagonists receive help to overcome their obstacles. Watching them fail and work to achieve success is immediately engaging and more rewarding when they have to work for victory. I love seeing them get their ass kicked in the beginning and actually overcome them on their own in the end. This applies to all characters really regardless of their morality. It was just as haunting to see Michael win in Halloween Kills just as much as it was amazing to see Batman finally overcome Bane in the end.

I was just thinking about how Godzilla is WAY too OP in GxK, he disposes of kaiju in like a minute in that movie, and then you supercharge him on top of that? At least he struggled with the Mutos and Ghidorah, and then Mechagodzilla whooped his ASS all over Hong Kong. Hopefully the next one introduces a believable threat for him.

To be fair? Mechagodzilla always gets the upper hand initially on Godzilla, in canon. But I couldn't agree more as to this is one of the reasons I dislike the newer Monsterverse movies; Godzilla is so OP in those movies. I watched this one as a child for the first time, and even though it was the edited English dub it still made a strong impression on me for the reasons you mentioned here. That and it also made me a huge fan of Gigan. Sure, it's really low budget and relied on stock footage, and it was Kaiju Wrestling Federation by then, but Toho did it better than Legendary Pictures because they weren't talking down to their audience the way the MV movies appear to be doing. IMO, anyway.

Thank you for mentioning Akira Ikifube's score - no question, one of the greatest of any genre (serious, I'd stack it with John Williams and way above Goldsmith). It absolutely elevates this film from a puppet show to high art. The scene where Godzilla rises Hulk Hogan- like from near-death to kick ass is one of the most inspiring in cinematic history (seriously!). Consider also: when the monsters fight, they actually fight. That fight goes on. They are not interrupted every 5 seconds by human plotline - something the modern series could definitely learn from (don't ever talk to me about 2014. . .).

As a kid during the Showa era, I can tell you that I always worried when I saw the three-headed demon arrive on the scene. However, I always knew the KING of ALL MONSTERS the Big G would come through in the end! Yeah, I don't mind the big fella taking a few lumps, however, I would have seriously stopped watching the Monsterverse had they allowed Kong to defeat Godzilla...simply because of all the arguments I had being a Godzilla fan during my childhood and hearing how "Kong defeated or killed Godzilla" in their epic 1962 clash! No matter that Big G beat Kong from pillar to post for 90 percent of the battle, but because they tumbled off the mountain and Kong had to come up for air while G swam away like the aquatic/amphibious creature he is, most took it that Kong won. Not so! So yes, there is the ire of a grade school version of myself and yes even though I'm pushing 60 with a terrifying medical test in a few days that may mean my last Godzilla film was Minus One, I still carry a grudge from that childhood drama defending Godzilla against the scores of Kong fans LOL. Seriuously, another solid video D Man!

Not that I disagree with the thesis, as far as it goes, but Godzilla got mulched pretty badly in his final fight against Hedorah, too. Which preceded this, and has a fairly strong science-fiction driven plot, plus darker themes and imagery reminiscent of G55 at times. At one point Godzilla is writhing in an acid-filled grave in the depths of night, screaming in despair and impotently shooting his breath weapon while the Smog Monster chuckles! He's only saved by distraction. But I'll grant that he isn't blasted down to the point where he's being mocked as he lays defeated. Still, this was one of the very first films (maybe the first one) I ever saw in an actual theater. (After my first film ever at a drive-thru: Godzilla vs Megalon!)

Re GxK, I don't think we're supposed to be worried about Godzilla at all, but rather about Kong. Still, ScarK has Shimu this time, who (we're told) singlehandedly nearly destroyed the Earth by causing an ice age, is larger than Godzilla (despite occasional scaling glitches {wry g}), and might have even solo'd King Ghidora. It's more a case of will Kong be able to help G deal with this problem -- because after all the _character_ focus is on Kong.

Gigan usually attempts to flee before his ally can. In Godzilla vs Gigan he failed because he was blasted out the sky and he eventually fled once King Ghidorah did. However in Godzilla vs Megalon he did successfully leave Megalon to the non existent mercy of Godzilla and Jet Jaguar. MechaGodzilla was ordered to retreat and was under the complete control of the Simians while Ghidorah has always retreated from possible fatal fights with the exception of Destroy All Monsters, but the Kilaaks weren't the brightest at using Ghidorah compared to other aliens. Showa Gigan's record speaks for itself, but at least he can take a hit from Showa Godzilla unlike his Final Wars incarnation who had to "battle" FW Godzilla. Too bad he was killed by Zone Fighter in the 1973 show. At least Megalon survived the showa series.

Don´t get me wrong final wars gigan is cool but he is really weak and got defaeted by godzilla in a few seconds so if monsterverse giagn will be a thing make him an actual evil threat. also i think they NEED to make gigan connected to the mutos because gigan being a cyborg muto doesn´t just make design wise sense but also in the way that godzilla already almost died to the normal mutos making gigan also an emotional villain for godzilla

Good video. I think you are missing the concept of Fighting Spirit, Tokkon/Toushi. It's a concept in Japanese Puroresu(pro wrestling). Looking at it that way, it is FAR from contrived. Japanese wrestling legends powered through bloody batterings and won during the 60s and 70s. Guys like Antonio Inoki and Rikidozan probably influenced Godzilla's comeback. It isn't random or contrived to me. It's fighting spirit.

I disagree with some of this. Godzilla king of the monsters 2019, godzilla is roundly beaten by ghidorah in boston until mothra steps in. I have no problem with godzilla beating kong as it felt like kong was the under dog (which he was). Godzilla was exhausted from his fight with kong so its no suprise that mechagodzilla had an advantage. The fact that mecha godzilla was able to hold its own easily against kong and godzilla combined (albeit both where drained) shows how big of a threat he was. I 100% agree about Godzilla x Kong making no sense however. Scar king was a poorly written antagonist. Kong could have probably solod him 1v1 if the fight had been allowed to continue uninterrupted. And the existence of shemo baffles me. She is bigger and potentially stronger than Godzilla. She was able to easily rag doll him off of her multiple times in the brazil fight and mostly shrug off his attacks....

I disagree with your assessment of godzillas power in KOTM and Godzillavs Kong. First he almost got defeated by the oxygen destroyer. Later he almost got defeated by King Ghidorah. Only the power up by Mothra and the distraction by the Russell family allowed Godzilla the chance to make a come back. In Godzilla vs Kong, Kong was the underdog so it is understandable that Godzilla would wipe the floor with him. Mechagodzilla trashing Godzilla after shows that,even though powerful, he can be defeated. I agree with your views on Godzilla x Kong however.
@DMan1954
@DMan1954 3 ай бұрын
My point was specifically about Godzilla in the Battle of Boston onward. Not pre-powerup. Godzilla doesn't struggle as much as he should until Ghidorah drops him from the atmosphere. The entire point of the movie was to sell you on the idea of both monsters fighting and one potentially winning over the other. They failed on the concept because audiences never believed Godzilla would lose. Underdog aside. Kong needed to trash Godzilla in Hong Kong for that premise to work. He could still lose, but ditch the 3 minute beam chase for 3 minutes of Kong destroying Godzilla and MAYBE I would agree they pulled it off

He struggles toward the end of the Boston fight. That isn’t nearly enough. Godzilla should have outright lost to Ghidorah in his first two fights to raise the stakes to the max. Instead, Ghidorah is overwhelmed and retreats in Antarctica and then nearly defeated at sea.

6 times he lost?
@Fang1st
@Fang1st 3 ай бұрын
@@Dreadd11 Guess it depends on what we count as a loss, like monster fights only or against humans, and what eras and such. Let's just say the main three eras, Showa, Heisei and Millennium, and we can include vs humans. So 1954, lost to the Oxygen Destroyer bomb, King Kong Vs Godzilla he loses, Lost to Mothra afterwards, becomes a hero and wins the rest of the era. Never loses in Heisei, unless we count 'needs help to win' or 'lost first fight then wins second fight' kinds of things. I won't include those since they are debatable and Godzilla 'does' win in the end, since I want to keep it as overall wins and loses. Millennium he loses in GMK, and while it can be considered a tie in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and S.O.S. Godzilla is forced to retreat or carried back to the ocean, so I'll count that as a loss for him. So overall, Godzilla loses 6 times in the first three eras, yes. Might have missed something, but I think everything I didn't include is debatable for Godzilla having won.
