Iron Kingdoms has its own (neglected) RPG, but they came out with a 5th Edition D&D version anyway. This isn't the first time, so how does this one compare to the 3rd edition version and is it worth getting? What have they done to the timeline and the world?!?

What a great review! I own Pretty much every book of the iron Kingdoms RPG and the unleashed RPG. I didn’t back the kick starter because I’m not a 5e Fan, even though the settings is one of my favorite settings to Gaiman. Part of me still wants to buy it. But I think I’ll just keep to the core 2d6 System. Which I feel is far superior to fifth edition. What a shame privateer press decided to go this route. I honestly feel they keep making the wrong choices.

I don't know if it was the wrong move, I think they were hoping to jump on the fame of D&D 5E, but I agree their 2d6 system is probably the best RPG system I have played, and I have have played over 20 different RPG systems.

Not sure if you're still paying attention to an old comment section, but figured I'd mention it anyway, since it wasn't mentioned elsewhere, but the infernal invasion wasn't made up for the RPG, but had in fact been part of the wargame already. The only progression new to the RPG we've really got is how the invasion ended.

This is exactly the review I was looking for most of the others were shamelessly biased by it being 5e. Some only reviewed the physical product quality. I wanted to know how it did in regards to 5e and presenting the Iron kingdoms. I'll now just use the setting of the 3rd edition and the rules of this one.

One thing I wanted to point out after I read the kickstarter material on Essences, Races, and Background attribute bonuses: you either get your racial bonus, or your Essence + Background bonus, not all 3. You still gain all of the special rules from all 3, just not attributes.

So the Infernal invasion was a big deal in the War game and they ran a tournament to determine the actual outcome of the setting which is why the Claiming is so prevalent in Requiem. This RPG is also kinda their soft launch to restart their War game as well.

I love the 5e version. I absolutely loved the 3.5 version also. I have not played the 2d6 system yet but may consider it at some point. I prefer d&d as i am old school. Mind you i will heavily modify the 5e version with other 3rd party materials. 5e is a great base system to build upon. Simple yet elegant but allows room for lots of crunch to be added if one wishes. I am not sure how the 2d6 system would hold up in dungeon crawling scenarios. Iron Kingdoms began as a 3.5 setting. It is the roots of the game. I am glad they came back to the d&d fold. Hoping they will collaborate with Kobold Press since Wizards is a sinking ship and they have worked with Wolfgang Baur in the past

As always, a well balanced review. I wish I had previous experience with Iron Kingdoms, but never had the opportunity. I think I would play the 'real' version vice the 5E version, but everyone's tastes vary.

I agree with you totally. I loved their own game system. I think it needed a few tweaks, but overall I loved it more than D&D 5e. That's saying something considering I've played D&D since 1st edition (except for 4th edition - we won't mention that mess). I so much loved the spell point system that IKRPG uses over memorization. Never liked memorization in D&D. Makes no sense that these highly intelligent spellcasters just forget how to cast a spell they've known for years.

In the 3.0 setting, guns had a full round action reload. You had to have 6 guns to use them in combat.

I think the original 3.5 IK is still the best version of the game. I didn't mind the house system but it was too identical to the miniatures game. Since it sounds like you still need the D&D 5e PHB for IK:R so this IK is a no buy.

Not a great deal, probably a good way to start, you just miss out on a lot. It's like a... soft reboot.

As a player, new to the setting, only introduced via the Requiem kickstarter, not at all. As a DM however, new to the setting, you'll want to look into and/or invest into previous resource book for lore and expanded histories.

This was too disorganized. You interrupt your too many times to offer a critique here and there. Another problem with your criticisms they are often subjective not functional. Your are ignoring or lacking a substantive understanding the lore in this review.
