Re: The last story: Isn't it fascinating that "historical accuracy" only ever gets brought up in D&D as an excuse to defend being a complete smeghead? I mean, it's never cool historically accurate stuff like "This village's economy depends on harvesting a specific kind of sea snail to make purple dye for fabrics" or "the monks drew knights doing battle with rabbits in the margins of their manuscripts as a way of venting their frustration with the little pests ruining the monastery garden." No, it's always to justify misogyny and racism. The average D&D world has tabaxi, tieflings, and tortles walking around as everyday citizens; civilization is under constant threat from marauding dragons and undead hordes; any piece of random furniture could secretly be a ravenous shape-shifting horror waiting to devour you, and spellcasters invoke the primordial elements and divine miracles on an hourly basis; but life was nonstop trauma and abuse for gays, women, and brown people a thousand years ago on Earth (which D&D this world clearly isn't but never mind that now), so I have to go out of my way to treat your characters with that kind of pointless cruelty at every turn because "hIsToRiCaL aCcuRaCy."

Not gonna lie, it's kinda a fear of mine that I'll one day run into my old bullies during a game of D&D. I don't know if any of them would ever be interested in D&D, but it's still a bit of a concern of mine. The bullying luckily never led to a broken arm or anything and mostly remained verbal, but one bully did harass me so much to the point that I tried to slap him out of instinctive self-defense. I literally blacked out as he was yelling insults at me in front of nearly the entire school and my body just moved on its own to strike back at him before falling to my knees, sobbing and screaming that I hated him. REALLY hope I don't run into that bully in D&D (or in general), especially since that incident actually got him expelled...

@@SilverTemplar Not as outlandish as your confidence in common sense and self preservation would lead you to think. I should know, I used to get swarmed a lot at school and one time it was so bad I pulled a fire extinguisher off the wall in the hallway and started swinging. There was a distinctive lack of police involvement and the way the incident was downplayed to my mother was so jaw-dropping I'd have been too stunned to pipe up with the truth even if I hadn't been shamed into silence and didn't have a vested interest in the incident just going away. Incidentally this story is also a lesson for those who tell their kids to just toughen up in the face of bullies, laying them out on their asses and putting genuine fear for their lives into them does even less than saying "acting more normal" does. And even beyond personal experience it's hard not to have heard of a lot of schools that have covered up things like sex crimes to save face.
@SilverTemplarАй бұрын
@@JustAPasserby-e6z Ripping a fire extinguisher off the wall isn't on the same level of a literal broken bone. I went to school way back in the day where teachers would encourage the jocks to bully the other kids. To foster a "you're a badass, be mean and win" attitude. Even then, if some kid broke another kid's arm the parents would get involved and it would cause a shit storm. The uncomfortable truth is there's an "acceptable level" of bullying that can go on, that the staff can and will ignore. This is not to say that any bullying is acceptable ofc, but I mean through the lens of douche bag coaches trying to win a state tourney or an AP teacher proud of their student that's in college classes or whatever position of "merit" that the school offers. However, that's not an unlimited threshold. Eventually other parents are going to notice, and there's going to be actual doctors involved. It's not just some kid being a hooligan and swinging a fire extinguisher around.

Seriously, this interaction right here fits perfectly enough for a "very special episode" on the matter. I don't *think* I did much more damage than deep bruising, they were able to stand back up on their own power by the time school staff got involved, but you decided for yourself the injuries couldn't possibly be that serious.
