It's the little bit near the end that makes me smile. "For a while Protag skimmed through his sheet and mine in order to try and find some loopholes. But came out empty handed." Poor jackass wanted another cheap victory for his character, he was even sure he could survive all that, and wasn't counting on getting one-shotted like the dumbass he was. OP didn't mention if Protag was upset about losing his OP Mary Sue character, but it's clear he did. May Protag only find games with killer DMs and other That Guys until he learns to be a better player and, more importantly, a better person.

Campaign could likely easily be modified to fulfill their fallen kings wishes. The Campaign ended because protag was embarrassed he lost and refused to let dm continue. Edit: nah dm was worse he chose protag every moment while saying no to everyone else,the game had to end because he never planned to let anyone else play.

I once played a campaign where the GM had decided that one of us should have been the main character. He was always praised by all the NPCs, nothing he did went wrong, he got the spotlight 24/7. The main difference between our MC and Protag was... that the MC player apparently did NOT want to be the MC - so he quit the campaign. The GM literally spitballed the rest of the campaign. It was kind of weird.

I like your not-MC a lot better than I like your DM just from that. Some GMs forget there's a difference between a TTRPG and a novel or anime. Few bits of linear media can pull off the multiple protagonists bit effectively, so when they work with what they know, such DMs choose one player and focus the story around them. Like, dude, if you want to run that sort of game, run a solo game with the other guy or write a novel. Unless the other players are complete doormats, they're not going to sit idly by and let themselves be treated like side-characters in their own story.

I mainly blame the DM, for letting it all turn into 'The Protag Show'. If Protag had shown some regard for his fellow players, it COULD have gone OK, but not sharing important info is entirely on him. His end was both well-deserved and epic, though. :)

There are ways of making a "king character" or "ruler character" work as a party, the party can be his loyal subjects that are his right hand men and women that help him run the kingdom and make key decisions to advance the kingdom, heck there used to be an entire campaign setting in old 2nd edition AD&D that was based around playing this sort of game called Birthright, so it can work, but in this instance, it was not going to work, the "ruler character" was way too ego driven and had no interest in involving the party into any of the game outside of their use as pawns in his personal character building adventure.

His hand was forced. It was already determined how damage the barrels of gunpowder dealt. He would have lost face in front of all the other players if he suddenly changed his mind in the main character's favor (a lot more than he already had lost with his cowardly cowtowing).

Yo, I have a question. I don't play d&d. I play a lot of different systems but I tend to steer clear of d20 Fantasy setting based systems like d&d and Pathfinder though I do play them from time to time if someone in the group invites me to one. I'm sure this is just a minority of people and I acknowledge that a lot of my experience with direct d&d and Pathfinder are from stuff like this. But. What is up with Paladin players!? Is there something about the class that attracts people like this or what? Rouges a get for the brooding cool guy I guess but?? I don't understand the paladin thing Also that's what protag gets for being "secret plans guy." Of course if you don't tell anyone you have a plan all set up there's a chance everyone else will not help you, do the thing you want to do. Op probably should have left the game before it all turned into insanity but also protag sucked. And shame on dm for making a single player character the driving point of the story to the point that you actually just can't continue the story without them

Late reply, but to answer your question it has a number of things based on what I've seen in D&D 5e regarding why Paladins attract so many non-broody that guys is because... 1. Paladins are powerful: Divine Smite alone makes Paladin's able to deal an additional bit of damage any time they want so long as they have spell resources. This combined with being able to heal as a class feature (themselves or others) starting with heavy armor, and access to a spell list of their own, the Paladin is said to be the strongest melee focused class, and arguably the second strongest class in the game (right behind Wizard, which is absurdly powerful if one studies it too much) so it attracts snobby power gamers who only care about strong hits and don't care about the Paladin Oath tenants, which ironically state if they fail to obey, they're supposed to their powers or become an Oathbreaker depending on the DM's ruling. But alas some DMs like this one are too spineless to enforce that. 2. Paladins are often the "I'm a holy warrior, I follow an oath, therefore I am ALWAYS right." kind of mentality. Like a scumbag who opts to become a cop not because he's passionate about protecting and serving, but because he feels like he can have the legal and moral high ground over anyone he desires when he wants his way. Except here he can get that rush without having to attend an irl police academy. In fact, in past editions of D&D, a Paladin HAD to be "Lawful Good" no exceptions. It's different now sure (Oathbreaker comes to mind), but still, that didn't mean the player behind the Lawful Good character wasn't behaving. I personally won't let someone play a Paladin unless they understand they must follow at least some kind of tenants, or risk becoming an Oath Breaker (if they're evil) or reclass into Fighter (if they're good), but thankfully every paladin I had at my tables as a DM and a player I never met one who was an entitled butthead, let alone as much as this guy.

I will say though that it was good thinking on the poster the 1st stories part to pretty much hoist that idiot with his own Petard! I start to wonder which p*** protagonist off More. Is character being killed in such a humiliating way. Dying while acting like a hypocritical hero pretty much admitting in his attempt at trying to act like hes the hero that hes a piece of s*** hiding behind the hero label. Is ordered at the poster pretty much Tell ended the story in such a cool way were he pretty much walked away looking like a bad a** from an explosion that did not hurt him while his idiot hero character died A humiliating death. I'm starting to think I read a manga Where the protagonist was in the poster's position and Bruce sherlock ended up becoming the true main character the story when the so called hero attended to vanquish him because hes the hero and anybody who stands against them are noisome is the villain dies in the most humiliating fashion. I think I also remember that said hero came back in a very humiliating manner As a mere annoyance Since he lost all of his overpowered ability, Turns out hes not as talented as he believed he was he just ended up All-powerful because of pure luck and now that you've lost all that he really has no real power I think this was to make fun of those few stories where the bad a** dies gets reincarnated and decides to hide as a useless lay about While they still have access to their powerful b******* abilities. But one thing that is factored in Is that they had to work hard for those abilities in their previous life one in this case the hero was such a loser who is used to having a written hand to them that they didn't remember how those abilities functioned. So when they were brought back as a useless nobody. They ended up being a useless nobody with the irony being that they were useless nobody with they got all those abilities that were handed to them in the previous life. Think of it as what happens when the hero dies and get reincarnated with their memory sealed And now there are nobody again To make way for new heroes or such. Only in this case the loser hero doesn't have his memories sealed so he still has his over inflated ego In a his mouth is writing checks he can't cash. Nightingale compared to team rocket that would be insulting the team rocket have a pedestal you can't just label any Body as, Plus technically they are not evil so that's what makes it hard to label ineffective jerk as villains as team rockets. They have to be jerks with a heart of gold in order to be able to have that label Like the actual team rocket

There are a few ones where these guys are the main character and the story bends over backwards to try to make them Right just like the dm did with whiny protagonist. And those ones bore me because it is honestly I'm easily annoyed by the edgelord They have to always be right portagonist. I mean what I like about shield heroes that's what he is still a bit of an edge Lord it was good that he Became less and less this as the story really goes to town on him Continuing to act this way Not really getting him too far ahead like He was believing, Basically hes learning that sometimes it's better to have a mix of the edgelord and the straight hero There are times where being edgelord is beneficial and there are times when being the edge Lord will bring you a lot more problems than you actually want brought on you. Me I'm a fan of these type of heroes honestly. You can be heroic and pragmatic at the same time people keep forgetting and assuming you can only be one
