Question: With regards to marking a target, can I mark the target using a melee spell attack such as Green Flame Blade or Booming Blade? Also, when I make that opportunity attack against the marked target, can I use War Caster to cast a spell instead? Asking for a Hexblade.

Just as a reminder, "Mark", "Healing Surges", and "Cleaving Through Creatures" are optional rules from the DMG. Do not assume that they are active at your table; check with your DM first. Your DM may not even know these options even exist.

@@markturner1220 Problem is that they are not. They are mostly underwhelming if you know how to optimize basic low level spells.
@MissOnana
@MissOnana Жыл бұрын
@@markturner1220 They're really not thou, because most of those - healing surges aside - are for martial classes, which are just innately weaker than casters. Let me put it this way: At level five a barbarian gets two attacks and plus 2 damage to each attack. Thats at maximum - assuming they wield a greatsword, as the highest damage wpn that isn't magical - 4d6 + 4. Sorcerer and wizard at that level get fucking FIREBALL. Which is 8d6 in a 20ft radius. Letting a martial not waste damage on a target with 1 HP or punish enemies for not disengaging isn't asking that much, and is lowkey underwhelming.

I know I learned a few optional rules due to Spheres of Power/Might XD I remember just before I ended up switching to a Spherecaster I asked about using Overrun that I learned of while looking through that. Funny enough I used a rule I learned by looking into Spheres to avoid changing to a Spheres character (attempt to not die as I was boxed in, and the Gloomstalker had just doomed me. He was invisible because Gloomstalker, our NPC ally was down, and I had just gotten back up from Gloom giving me a healing pot so I had basically no health. As a Charisma character (Warlord type) I convinced the enemies to let us go... And then the Ranger decided to shoot them, so I had to overrun to try and flee. Needless to say I dropped and as a Wemic, Gloomstalker couldn't drag me away, let along both the barbarian and I while under attack. I bled out. Character got rezed in town but the trust was gone and he left)

Cleave is a great rule to implement in your game to help fix the "Melee characters don't have any AOE options" complaint you often hear. I played a very research/crafting focused campaign about a year ago. We were an all caster party with an artificer, a wizard, a Druid and a warlock. The way we did things was that we researched magic types and item crafting and then as a group we decided how the items should be shaped to perform the task we wanted (we’re all physicists so the shape was important) and then the artificer with proficiency in smith’s and tinkerer’s tools and the others helped imbue it with magic. The main quest line was that we had to get a specific sword to destroy a great evil. It turned out that we had to make the sword ourselves using a special magic forge. It was a lot of fun. Even more fun was our DM not realising that *of course* we’d make more magical weapons for ourselves once we had accès to the magical forge.

I do want to mention in regards to the cleave optional rule: The target your reducing to 0 hit points needs to be unharmed to perform a cleave on them, and then the second target your cleaving to continue cleaving also needs to be unharmed. This makes this mechanic only really useful for defeating like REALLY REALLY low HP minions. Like if you're a Paladin with a Halberd and you wanted to cleave a group of 7 HP goblins who are all within 10 feet of you, you can expend a spell slot for a Smite and cleave through all of them in one attack assuming none of them lost even 1 hit point before that.

@LorcanaTCGcast Жыл бұрын
@J D maybe for more realism? after all, a creature being near death =/= it being almost cleaved through already :) only at full HP it is safe to assume that lethal damage would be enough to cleave through them i would like it better if instead of cleaving through an injured enemy being impossible, it just reduces the damage of the attack by the creature's MAXIMUM hp - the way i see it, that would make the mechanic stronger AND more realistic
@JD-qq8fz

Like if the players are in a war, whether they’re just passing through or actively intending to participate, and there are so many enemies. For example, proficiency with Mason's Tools allows you to damage walls more efficiently, proficiency with Cartographer's tools provides you with additional insights from Int checks, and proficiency with Carpenter's tools allows you to build wooden structures more efficiently and notice woodwork that might compromise your Dexterity checks.

That pirate ship over there heading your way? Turn the boat sideways and fire those 8d10 bludgeoning damage cannons!

I RP through Cleaving rules from the DM standpoint to speed up through low- to mid-level mods. My players get 'frustrated' when the BBEG has a mob guards and when we first started (~5yrs ago) they got disheartened having to chew through a mob while the BBEG taunted them just by his presence. I also apply real world physics you see in action samurai type games with gore all over the place - players don't gain anything cuz they are adventurers, but your average mob bad guy isn't used to fighting over gore, so they count as difficult terrain. Happy Cleaving everyone :)

Just to fix something you said, you said that with the cleaving rule if a creature has 1 HP and you crit your excess damage goes to the next creature but cleaving only works with undamaged creatures so you night want to fix that or specify you meant a really weak creature that only has 1 HP max.

I actually had a DM who thought the Cleaving Through Enemies rule was a 'weird rule' and didn't want to include it in his game because of that. And he absolutely refused to let us use it in a situation where we were surrounded by 30+ enemies. No I don't play with that DM anymore.

In the history of the game. It IS a weird rule. Not letting you do it against a wave of 30 enemies seems ok. Realistically I'd accept it against enemies actually in your threat range and low hp mobs though to speed up the game.

Well, Rule As Written, it is kind of weird, since it specifically mentions the target being "undamaged." If it was at full health and you kill it in a single blow, it is valid to continue on, but if the target is missing 1 hp, it apparently isn't.

Cleave states that the creature needs to be "Undamaged" and reduced to 0. So it won't help with getting more damage out of a 1 Hp enemy and carrying it over to another. But it does mean you can throw more low HP minions at your players and watch the barbarian or paladin cleave through 3-4 kobolds in one swing.

Cleave's fundamental problem which has existed since 3e is if you're chewing through popcorn enemies that you can 1-2 shot, they're almost certainly not a serious threat either, so you may as well use that feat for something better.

My favorite thing people might forget is Tasha's Customize Your Origin. It essentially let's you exchange any ability score bonus, proficiency etc. from your race with another comparable one. So you could exchange an Elf's Longsword proficiency to get Halberd proficiency, if you wanted to, but most importantly, you could play a dwarf wizard, for example, without losing out on the intelligence bonus that you wouldn't be able to get without Tasha's. This kind of adjusts the pre Tasha's races to how the were designed post Tasha, which is fantastic and makes a lot of race/ class combinations viable. I assume most people already know about this, but if you don't, this is a game changer. You can also use it on DnD Beyond, even if you don't have access to Tasha's.

From what I've noticed most folks don't pay attention to crafting, tools, or other unique item interactions because combat is more of the focus. I've had people look at me funny when I go to spike a door, cook food for the party, or even maintain their equipment. (Cobblers Tools can be of a big help.) In one campaign I was playing a Limitanei (Fighter) and took a ton of proficiencies a garrisoned board guard would reasonably have. Capentry, Cooking, Medicine, and so on. He'd wake up early every morning to cook food for the party, maintain weapons and gear, and shore up the camp a little for our return. The extra benefits from this saved us a few times. Hell, we camped so often in the same place that the DM go tired of me messing with thr shelters that he ruled them permanent, well maintain homesteads. So i got to work on walls and fortifications after xD

There's a really interesting aspect to the crafting rules that has immense roleplay potential. Crafting a magic item requires a "formula" and "materials", but there's no specifications on what those are. That sounds like the writers being lazy, but it's actually incredible foresight, in my opinion. Yes, your players can gather the horn of a corrupted unicorn, a branch from a thousand-year-old elm tree, and mountain copper struck by lightning to make a wand, but you don't _have_ to limit it to just making a new item. Suppose one player's character has a particular attachment to a certain piece of equipment. Let's say it's an heirloom sword. Well, what if the "formula" for a Sun Blade or a Holy Avenger called for taking a weapon with a particular sentimental attachment or history, slaying a particular monster with it, and then going to a sacred place with a piece of that monster to make an offering? What if their special sword, that has a great personal significance to their character, by being used as a material for the weapon they're "crafting" actually _became_ their new magic sword? Don't you think a personal quest to imbue magic into a weapon that was already important to the character sounds pretty awesome?

I may have misunderstood what you were saying in the section about mark, but I thought you were saying you could make multiple reactions as long as they were on different turns and for a second I blacked out thinking I'd been playing wrong for 10 years... looked it up, if you take a reaction at any time you can't do another until the start of your next turn. @@MageLeaderInc 🤔🤔😯 I see... Mark says you can only get one opportunity attack per turn but you don't use your reaction so each TURN you could potentially do an opportunity attack. So you need to have enemies that are taking different turns (i.e. different enemy types or your DM is ignoring the suggestion to have identical enemies go on the same turn) and they also move out of your reach... situational, but good!
