I DNF’d too. My rear bike gear cable broke in Pembroke. I made it as far as Narberth with only my two front gears but was never going to make it up those hills with only the front gears so I had to quit while I was ahead. Gutted. Will be back next year.

If it's any consolation your Tenby recce - tips video helped me during the swim especially the one to head towards the life boat station and the gap in the houses it really helped me to keep calm during all the confusion, thank you👍 hope you feel better soon. This was a hard video for me to watch as I was also a DNF last week in Tenby. My problem was just speed on the bike, I didn't make the cutoff, but it's weird and encouraging to hear you having a lot of the same emotions and thoughts that I've been having over the last week. Thanks for the video and for the honesty.

With Tenby it helps if you know the course, there's plenty of hills which will bring hour average down. You need to know where the flattest sections are so you can work hard

That’s a tough old course Liam don’t be too hard on yourself - it’s easily the hardest of the four IM races I’ve done. When I did IM Wales me and my buddy went down for a recce about 3 months before the event and went round with some local cyclists we got chatting to on a FB group and that helped enormously having some knowledge of the course. Also a few I got talking to had DNF’d previously and they all finished 2nd time round so I do hope you’ll have another crack at it.

Harry, you've let no one down. Your loved ones support is unconditional. I hope it is some comfort to know that there are many (myself included) commenting here who have experienced the emotional turmoil that comes with a DNF, so sorry mate, you're not unique in that regard! You just happened to experience it much nearer the pointy end of the action than most of us can dream of! I'm glad you had people with you to help you make the right call to stop when you did. I think there is too much of a 'finish at all costs' culture around Ironman which can lead to bad outcomes. I hope you sort the stomach issue soon and all the best for the future.

Harry, I've been watching your videos for months now and you are inspirational. From training tips, fueling, race prep, gear and experiences, it inspires us age groupers to go further, try different things that we may never would have. And as an added bonus we get to see someone training & working towards a win and the dedication it requires, the ups and the downs. This video is no exception, and even with a DNF, you still continue to inspire. This is a mere stepping stone towards the top and you'll look back at this and know it helped make you the athlete you will become. You've let no one down, don't sweat it and keep doing what you're doing. 🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️🙏

I was totally gutted. Like you though it was my first Ironman and I took a lot of positives from it and the experience of Tenby/Saundersfoot etc was surreal! You never fail, you only ever succeed or learn! I had to DNF my first Staffs 70.3 after 2.5miles of the run. I exited the swim and lost the vision in my left eye (corneal abrasion), rode the whole bike course with 1 eye. By the time I hit the run, I just couldn’t do anymore. Took me 3 days to get my sight back, and about 2-3 weeks for it to not be blurry anymore. The demands you place on yourself is the hardest critic that you will ever have; it took me a while to accept the DNF and will just learn, and do it next time. To quote Sun Tzu “No plan withstands contact with the enemy.” Basically, when biology is involved, things can and do go wrong…it’s a fact of life. Don’t dwell on it, learn and let it be in your rear view mirror. Keep going, you are doing awesome.

Really unlucky Harry, but a great video and an amazingly honest take on it. We’re at different levels here - I’m 50, but I had a very similar experience at IM Tallinn this year (my 4th IM). I had a decent swim and bike, but had severe stomach cramps on the run just after the end of lap 1 and I thought it was game over. I managed to walk for a while, but as soon as I ate anything or tried to run fast I was back in the portaloos! I ended up walking most of it in the end - but in my case luckily the weather was very pleasant by that point (after raining for 3 hours on the bike!) so it became a stroll round in the early evening sun. I had had some knee issues during training so I had practised power walking 10 miles so that came in really handy lol! The blisters were bad tho I think worse than running for some reason. Anyway it won’t put me off - and my training was great, so I can’t wait for the next one tbh I’m thinking of Kalmar or Italy. Keep up the hard work you’ll be back stronger than ever next time out - all that training and valuable experience gained won’t go to waste you’ll smash the next one.

Great video. Tough luck with the race itself. However, if it's a bug there's little you can do to control it. I ran the Wales Marathon at the LCW in Tenby in 2019 - that's a tough course - different to the IronMan, but it's a great course and as for the crowds they were so inspiring and motivating.

Fair play Harry, it was a really tough day. I got to t1 and there had to be at least 30 people wrapped in blankets. The temp dropped really rapidly when it started to rain. I got a huge blister at mile 19 and it was super disappointing as my main goal was just to be able to run the marathon. Almost got it. The fitness was there but my wet feet got the better of me. And another thing, I'd recommend the week or two before, reduce your gluten intake and see how it goes. It works for me as I have bowel disease and I'm pretty much an expert in GI issues haha. All the best for your next race

Unrelated to your DNF...forget about the full distance for now Harry, you've only just begun your pro career, stick with the middle distance races. Look at the PTO, 100k races are going to be where the money is and as a pro that's where you want to be. Your swim will be to your advantage here and should suit you way better than the full distance for now. You'll get more races in every year, get more experience, hopefully more podiums and thus more exposure.

That's what i found most frustrating about my first full at Nottingham this year, you look back at simple mistakes or things you could correct but you cant really just enter another one in a few weeks to sort them out (what with recovery and then taper again etc) whereas the shorter distance you can jump back in to make up for it quite quickly. Anyway, awesome swim and lots of lessons learned 👍

Great effort dude. I think a DNF as a pro is a different beast to those as an amateur. A pro might lose a payday but it also makes sense to call it a day to keep the body fit and firing rather than cost yourself in the future. These races take a lot of recovery without a touch of illness. Don't beat yourself up about it, every race has its lessons to teach us.

Putting this in the context of the season, you continue to progress and there will be other opportunities to show that. This race didn't go the way that you have wanted, but the training plan got you there in good shape and the reason for the illness can be looked at for next time. Accept it, refocus and go again.

You will bounce back stronger. In your "Ironman training gone wrong" video at minute 2:52 you had to stop your run due to GI issues. @@Harry-Palmer I rememebr the swim beeing a battle for survival. Could not see where I was going as the waves where so big - lots of other AG's did not complete the swim. My front shifter on the bike stopped working also. That was no fun with thouse hills. It's a very crazy race. From the start to the end. One of the hardest Iv'e ever done. And on the day it was the warmest day in Wales ever. 20 degrees all the way into the night. It was suppose to rain and be cold. Nope. Not that day :)

Recovery, hydration and nutrition is the flip side of triathlon (indeed any endurance sport). Time to get yourself tested for any allergies. For future races you may want to take your own food. FWIW I would never trust any food the night before a race unless I prepare it. Check out Ironman Tallinn, I’ll cheer you on 😎 Stay motivated you have years of racing in front of you 😉🙌

I had a DNF at Ironman Wales 2018, missed cut off on bike due to mechanical. Came back in 2019 and completed it. Obviously I'm no pro but I know what a DNF feels like

Get those intolerance tests. I’m sure you will get heaps of anecdotal advice, but trying the scientific route is a good start. Heck, it could have just been a sneaky little e.coli or thousand in that meal. Such rough luck, having been so careful. As others have said though - the great swim and bike under grotty circumstances should be encouraging! Stay strong 👍👍

Real shame, but it’s something not controllable and will happen to everyone at some point. Looking at the actual results it’s mad to think the ‘in the mix’ top 5 you were faster on the swim and only 10-15 mins behind on the bike despite having the stomach issues. Hopefully you do another one!

Suffered badly with gi issues, could never figure it out, cramps, wind, nausea which use to come in increasing waves. my wife suggested that I stick to a plainer version of what I normally eat in the build up and she also suggested on the day I eat shortbread, squashies and drink water with tab the normal tabs, her thinking was that if I don't get I'll at Christmas having that for on mass on top of a large roast maybe it would work for IM. in fairness it did work, maybe not as quite calorie appropriate as some other foods but I didn't have a odd feeling inside all day. was there only chance I had of making it
