Steve Carell did not watch the original, because he didn't want to be influenced in any way by the original character, he wanted to make his own version of it.

One of the greatest comedic shows in history! They pushed the boundaries and it payed off in such amazing ways. I wish we could have more shows like this but people have become waaaaaay too sensitive. Even some of the original writers have expressed regret. Unbelievable! I guess some people can't understand satire and take things way to literally and seriously. One reason we can't have nice things anymore.

Whats crazy is that this show wasn't considered edgy at all. This is known as a wholesome family friendly show. The approved prevailing culture has just become so sensitive that this retroactively comes off as edgy. Obviously, the joke is that it is ridiculously offensive, but lots of ppl don't even want jokes about being offensive to be made anymore.

Writing a script knowing Carell would deliver the bit spot on and add his own genius seamlessly on top would have to inspire someone to really go for it…having that tool in the bag playing off those other very believable “office looking” characters mostly playing it straight could set up almost any scenario you like and kill…and it absolutely did every time…reviewing them here brings back so much. I’m thinking of several future omg episodes that really pushed the “comedy is” limits off the chart.
