if you see anyone on the field that looks like they don't athletically belong out there it's generally a kicker or QB lol. they used to have stricter rules for uniform numbers so the only people who could wear single digit numbers were QBs, kickers, punters. WRs could wear numbers in the 80s or 10s, RBs/CBs would be 20-40s, offensive linemen 50-70s, etc. they've loosened the rules now to be more like college where anybody can wear anything. because of these historical associations and human psychology, smaller numbers can make a player seem faster or more exciting. it's really funny seeing a 300lb defensive tackle wear number 1

College has gotten ridiculous. Single digits??? You think you can just wear single digits??? Some freshman wide receiver wants single digits??? Back in the day you had to be the man to wear single digits. And #1??? You think you are good enough to wear #1??? You better be the second coming of Warren Moon if you think you are good enough to wear #1!!!!

At 10:40 it's right after the first described as "Hail Mary" pass thrown by Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson in 1975 very late in a conference playoff game in Minnesota where the Minnesota fans to this day maintain Pearson committed offensive PI, the Dallas fans to this day say"they didn't call it." The crowd response from that crook of the stands was an empty whisky bottle that tagged that official right in the head. It drew blood and instigated a police response. Further than that I don't remember.

Most Refs are at least 10-15 years older than the players. Many are over 45-50 and they still have to play every down and run all over the field. I am sure they get a little gassed and tired as well and can't always get out of the way.

So what a lot viewers never understand is that the field of vision for a player on the field wearing a helmet is extremely limited. Seeing refs on the field is extremely difficult. And at speed even harder. So from our perspective we think “ why couldn’t he just get out of the way” he had time to move. But the game perspective is faster and narrow sighted due the helmets and pads. Simply getting out of the way is not as simple as it sounds. That’s why when the announcers comment about a players great vision or great field awareness is a an awesome compliment.

The 2nd clip- the ball just slipped out of the QB's hand before he could complete his intended throwing motion sending the ball to the ref...What you look for in a the "perfect" QB pass is a "tight spiral". That football came out "wobbly" which explains how his arm went the QB's right, but ended up tp the left of him.

Second pause about the zebra's... A helmet should be worn due to the likelihood that another ref will experience the same hit, but next time the back of his skull bounces off the turf causing a concussion, (brain injury). Don't know if been said but the one with Big Ben yeeting the ref in the head with no one around is supposedly something QB's do when they're not happy with the officiating. I've long advocated (to zero actual response) that in both football and baseball, NO on-field official (umpire) is allowed older than the oldest active player on opening day of a season. The leagues retire players by letting contracts run out with no extension, or just not offering a contract or tryout at the end of a career, because of inability to perform. It's the same thing from my vantage.

0:55, as silly as this looks, as a ref myself, I can understand how he made this mistake. He's supposed to be positioned behind the play on the right side, and when the ball gets behind him, his thought was "I need to get behind the play." It's uncomfortable to be that out of position and have no good path back into position. And I guess he thought he could pass in front of him to stay on the right side of the play.

you have to understand the ref job is not to keep your eyes on the ball. there are different referee position that are responsible for looking at different aspects of the game. they all report to the Head Referee who is in charge of the crew and reports each penalty in game to the crowd. some refs are purely to look at the line for any holding or offsides fouls etc. back refs are looking at the WR and CB for penalties etc.

@plaid11

To be fair, most of the refs aren’t watching the football all the time. Their primary job is to watch certain groups of players or areas to see if a penalty is committed. They are supposed to pay attention to where the ball is too but when the ball is thrown way down field, they are ball watching. Most players are running in a direction and when the ball is thrown, the player adjusts to the ball and sometimes the ref doesn’t think the player is going to come in their direction. There are times I’m sure they are caught off guard. Don’t forget, you’re seeing a few plays over decades of NFL games. Hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of plays and you get these few times. It’s not like it happens often. Most fans can watch NFL games every week and never see a ref get in the way of a ball thrown way down field. I haven’t, only in these kind of compilation videos, but never in a live game I’m watching

You need to check out Fran. He's the 70s Mahomes for scrambling abilities.

The refs are considered a part of the playing field. If they interfere with the play in any way the play stands as is.

Probably not a lot of fun to get run over by a player. Officials aren't wearing pads either, and although they might be in decent shape, they're not in peak physical form like the players are. It's not a good day at the office for them.

Love the reactions! I would like to throw out a suggestion to watch a few of the videos of the “NFL Top 100” series on some of the star players your unfamiliar with! Would be a great way to quickly learn about some of the star players before the season starts!

You lose a down. The official IS a part of the field. End of story.

Check out NHL Refs getting hit by players or pucks. It's not interfering. They are part of the field. It's going to happen. Video doesn't really convey the speed on the field.
