Dodgers fan here- and I’m 100% on the Padres’ side in all of this. Profar legitimately celebrated with his fans, Ruiz had no business being in his face and touching him, and Schilt’s complaint about the pitcher not getting tossed in valid. Ump’s opinion on intent shouldn’t matter when it happened right after the warning. After all that, their subsequent celebrations are expected to be rubbed in more.

The reason why Gore might sound familiar to you is that he debuted with the Padres. He was drafted 3rd overall by the Padres and was a top prospect for a while. He was one of the big pieces that the Padres traded to the Nationals to get Juan Soto.

What makes no sense really in this situation is that after warnings are given, if a pitcher hits a batter, the pitcher gets thrown out whether it was intentional or not. This is the first time I've ever seen a pitcher not get ejected after being warned.

These are grown men, paid to play a game for strictly entertainment purposes, and he’s making a show of it. So funny when players get their feelings hurt over a team kicking their ass. But the pitcher has to be ejected there even if it’s an accident. That’s all you have to do is pretend like you didn’t mean to??? Gore was on the Padres, another reason I don’t think he intended to hit Profar. But he’s probably trying to piss him off and throw in close, but in that situation you’re not allowed any leeway after a warning. Your duty is to make sure you don’t hit him or get ejected. Ball don’t lie, poetic justice was served

I remember a huge call in the 2022 NLCS, game 5, Padres @ Phillies. Profar had a full count (3 balls, 2 strikes) & the next pitch was a ball but the ump said he went around for a strike 3. He kinda lost it but it pretty much ended the Padres season with that call.

It’s new school baseball vs old school baseball… Newer players celebrate and try to make it fun and exciting vs the older player that want things “respectful” and if you taunt you get pegged… personally I like the taunting and celebrating, it’s more entertaining and helps the younger fans get into it more.

From a rules perspective, any time there is any kind of confrontation, umpires can choose to give warnings to both teams which means that if they judge any pitcher to be intentionally throwing at a player, whether they hit them or not, it would result in the automatic ejection for both the pitcher and that pitcher's manager. I think this is why Shildt was "upset." He was angling to get the pitcher and manager thrown out but the umpires didn't think it was intentional (and I'm inclined to agree here) so he decided to go all out and get his money's worth. Umpires can actually give warnings at any time for any reason, and they can also choose to eject any pitcher that they feel threw intentionally at a batter. If the latter occurs, just the pitcher gets tossed. Existing warnings are the only time the manager gets auto-tossed too. This process often gets misconstrued by managers because they will claim that umpires should have given warnings before tossing their pitcher or that umpires who have given warnings have to throw out the next pitcher who hits a guy (like happened here) but neither have to happen under the rules.
@natelan69420

Taken in a vacuum, if a pitcher accidentally hits batter with no prior conflict between the two teams, a pitcher would NOT be ejected. However, once an ump has issued a warning to a pitcher BECAUSE it is presumed that contextually, a pitcher MIGHT (intentionally) hit a batter to make some sort of point, the pitcher would ALWAYS be ejected, especially if it was the very first pitch after the warning was issued. Don't be fooled by the "oopsie daisy" look on Gore's (Nat's pitcher) face, he INTENTIONALLY hit Profar immediately after the skirmish. If anything, the oopsy daisy look was because he accidentally hit Profar lower on the body than he had intended, he almost certainly meant to Profar in the torso, as is the norm. The feckless, idiot ump should've immediately disqualified the pitcher after that pitch. Also, the ump should not have allowed their catcher to molest Profar for several minutes. The catcher was making his best effort and provoking Profar into a physical altercation (in order to have a fiery hot Profar ejected from the game).

I was at both these games. The walk-off was insane and 100% Profar was celebrating with the 40,000 fans in attendance. It also wasn’t a simple one run walk-off but four runs were needed. The pitcher was warned, if he accidentally hits the pitcher is irrelevant and he should be ejected

As far as I know, there isn’t an unwritten rule about excessively celebrating a walk-off. I mean, he literally won the game in a do or die situation, that’s about as good as it gets. If that doesn’t warrant a celebration, I don’t know what does.

A hit-by-pitch doesn't usually warrant an ejection. But after the Profar celebration "toward" the Nats dugout the night before and both teams and the pitcher now having been warned, and then - the very next pitch - Profar is hit, 99% of the time the pitcher would be ejected. This is because, in most cases, that HBP was intentional However, the umpire determined that it was not intentional. Based on what Shildt said to Martinez, perhaps the umpire took that into account.

- Gore was Padres’ top prospect, top 10 prospect in all baseball for a while, played for Padres for a bit before being included in the big Soto trade with the Nationals, along with CJ Abrams - both seem to be doing decently as pros now with some experience under their belts, but Gore being involved in this made it even more interesting given he knows all these guys - There’s an incident Jomboy doesn’t include during the top of the first inning where Winker of the Nationals is talking shit to Profar before all the stuff at home plate a few minutes later with the Catcher - This breakdown video doesn’t do all of it justice because the crowd noise was amazing during all of this, made it much more intense, from the walk off the night before through to the Profar grand slam the next night - Lastly, I was really interested in more of the lip reading, but presumably, much of the verbal exchanges between players would have been in Spanish, and I guess Jomboy couldn’t find a Spanish lip reader to contribute, 😂

It's really unusual for umpires to issue warnings, for the next guy to get hit by the pitch, and for there not to be an ejection of the manager and the pitcher. If I were a Padres fan, I'd be pretty upset right there. Objectively, though, the umpires probably got it right, because of the type of pitch that was and the immediate reaction from the pitcher. I don't think Profar did anything wrong in any of it, and I don't think a whole lot of fans care for "you hurt my feelings, so I'm going to hurl this baseball at you". There are plenty of reasons to chuck a baseball at someone, but that ain't one.

I think Profar took it a bit far with "being disrespected" in the first game. Walking Arraez in that situation is baseball 101 and unless Profar thought he was a better batter than Arraez, no offense should have been taken. However, in that situation, I don't blame Profar for using it as inspiration to crank one and have *some* fun with it. Then it was time for the Nats to over-react. Don't like to be shown up? Well, play better. On the next day, I think Profar and the rest of the Padres showed great forbearance while Ruiz patronizingly pawed their player. If I was coach, that's where the dugouts would have emptied.

Except that’s not what happened. Jomboy got it wrong here too reporting that he celebrated in front of the Nat’s dugout. If you watch the Padres video feed that shows the whole camera angle, Profar wasn’t anywhere close to the Nat’s dugout when he was pumping the fans up after hitting a wall-off single. What you will see though are Nat’s players waiting around in the dugout and watching the Padres celebrate. Why would you wait around and watch them celebrate and then cry about it the next day?

…because he came in from on deck to the batter’s box and pushed Ruiz aggressively. If Profar didn’t like how Ruiz was talking, fine. If the umpire wanted to break it up, he could have. Or Profar could have asked the umpire to. No need for Machado to get involved at all. Ruiz is not a temperamental kind of guy. It’s wild to see him, well, care that much, get fired up about anything. Also, I watched the Nationals feed, and Profar did some of both. He pumped up the crowd and then specifically came over to the Nats dugout to make a show of it. The Nats were annoyed and rightfully so. I don’t say that as a fan of the Nationals, although I am one. The Nats are below 500 and not having a great year, and they were swept by the Padres; it’s perfectly clear who’s the better team. Nats are often pretty low-key in games, probably because of that. Which is what makes this kind of Harper-style tantrum from Profar and Machado so unnecessary. Who flexes on someone that’s not playing at their level? Because they “felt disrespected”? Stop.

Profar clearly walked over to celebrate with his teammates and made no eye contact nor did he turn to the Nats dugout. Why were the Nats players still waiting around anyway? They should’ve never even been there by the time Profar walked over to his teammates. Ruiz was being super childish and tried to school a veteran player. FAFO is what he got. Padres/Profar did not start this. Ruiz is responsible for his actions. Machado came to try to break it up and if you look closely it looks like the ump was also ready to step in before Machado stepped in. Bottom line is Ruiz is was yapping his mouth for way too long. Profar said he just let Ruiz have it because he doesn’t want to get suspended.

@@BeeSP619watch the MASN coverage and see the distance from the dugout, directly toward the dugout, for yourself; they’re biased announcers, of course, but it was all they could talk about. Say the Nats were making a big deal about the taunting of you want, and I might agree! But spare me the gaslighting. We saw what happened, the announcers saw what happened, and Profar basically admitted he did it when he said he felt disrespected. What makes more sense - the Nats, a sub-500 team that hasn’t gotten in a fight all year, collectively decides to invent an offense that pisses off the most mild player on the team, or Profar got a little full of himself after a home run and showed off in front of the oppo dugout? Again, not going to argue, it was what it was , but I didn’t like it when Bryce Harper did that ish when he was on the Nationals, and I don’t like it here. The Padres are having a good year!
