The Craig Anderson one always gets me. He learned of his wife's cancer diagnosis and left to be with her but she urged him to go play with his team and punched a shutout 2-0. (second shutout in his 2 starts) Also the Vegas shooting was a music festival and it's the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

Through out the year, hockey fans did many tributes to The Humbolt Broncos, one of the most touching ones was hockey fans all over the US and Canada left a Hockey Stick outside their door in a movement called #SticksoutforHumbolt. Where ever those boys where going, they needed a stick.

One thing you missed about the first one, was that it wasn't just one arena, it was every Canadian arena that were playing that night, and they all joined in. The shooting that prompted this was Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a Canadian soldier and reservist on ceremonial sentry duty at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, fatally shot by a lone gunman.

For the Coby Cave tribute, a thing that gives it extra poignancy is where the game was at. The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are arch rivals. Their games are known as "The Battle of Alberta" and their fans hate each other. That game was being played in Calgary, so it was the Flames and their fans honoring an Oilers player who tragically died.

The Vegas shooting took place just before the Golden Knights began their inaugural season. While most of the players were completely new to the city, they were very active in the community in the aftermath of the tragedy. They went on a Cinderella run all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, which is unheard of for an expansion team. A lot of people questioned whether or not the NHL would succeed in Las Vegas, but they were embraced by the city right away.

Here in Montreal, we almost always sing the bilingual version of O Canada. Here is one of the bilingual versions: "O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all of us command. Car ton bras sait porter l’épée, Il sait porter la croix! Ton histoire est une épopée Des plus brillants exploits. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee." Some lines are in French and some are in English. There's also a unilingual French version and a unilingual English one. If you listen to the version sung by the crowd here, you will hear that the middle lines are sung in French by some people and in English by others.

The Humboldt Broncos were a Junior hockey team, that were on their way to an away hockey game. An accident occurred at the highway intersection when the bus was hit by a semi. The bus driver and two coaches, statistician, radio announcer physical therapist and 10 team members were all killed. The thirteen team members who survived had varying injuries some as serious as complete paralysis..This happened in 2019.

Humboldt is about an hour east of where I live. The location where the bus crash happened, I know very well. Been through that intersection a number of times. A year ago was the first time I had a chance to drive that highway since the crash. Had to stop and pay my respects. It just so happened that it was pouring rain. Inside AND outside my car. 🥺🥺😢. Still chokes me up every single time I think about it. The hospital staff and all of the first responders deserve so much credit. UNBELIEVABLE what they witnessed.

The opening O’ Canada was filmed in Toronto. There are two official versions of O’Canada, one wholly in French, one in English. As I recall the words don’t exactly translate word for word in the different versions. Despite being an older English speaker, my long forgotten high school French, I’ve heard the French version enough I can sing it without remembering what the words mean. In Ontario and elsewhere in English speaking Canada, O’Canada is commonly sung with two lines near the middle of the song in French, (it’s always the same two lines) as a way of showing a unity of country. It’s another unique Canadian thing. Great reaction as always.

I was at the Bruins game where they sang the anthem. A moment I will never forget. The game was a few days after the bombing and a day ( or maybe 2) after the last suspect was caught. The entire city and some surrounding cities and towns went into lockdown for a day when they were searching for the suspect, which is why the game was originally postponed. Unfortunately the Bruins lost in the cup final that year, but the Red Sox (who were supposed to be very bad that year) overperformed and won it all which was very healing to the city. The foundation of Boston's culture is it's sports teams so it was extremely important to everyone who lived in/was a fan of New England sports.

Missed was last year's tribute to Borje Salming at Scotia Bank Arena in Toronto. Salming, along with Inge Hammerstrom were the first two Swedes to play in the NHL, back in '75/76. At the time, the book on European players was that they were "soft". Salming proved tough as nails, and high skill level. An NHL defender that would make any line up of any team at any point in history. Salming was diagnosed with ALS a few years back, and knowing the end was near, they had him come back to see the fans. His last game in Toronto was in '88/89, but even fans that weren't born then knew who he was and what he symbolized. The opening face off featured an all Swede line that the Leafs put out, to show what he had done for the game. Salming was unable to speak at this point, and he cried. But I didn't cry, I'm too tough for that nonsense. (liar)

It wasn't show here, but the moment that came to mind for me was the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash, and the tribute to former St. Louis Blues players Pavol Demitra, and Igor Korolev. The older Korolev was a coach for Yaroslavl, and Demitra was a player for them late in his career. The entire KHL team lost their lives in the crash. By pure coincidence they both wore the number 38 when they played in the NHL for St. Louis (at different times of course). Though not officially retired that number has not been assigned since. The tribute in St. Louis was very moving.

Cheers for this. Some really great and touching moments there. My favorite hockey video is a bit more upbeat version of a crowd singing "O Canada" just like the first clip. 2006 Western Conference final, game 3 between Anaheim and Edmonton. First two games were in Anaheim and, playing a Canadian team, some fans booed their national anthem. Game 3 was the first of the series in Edmonton. They politely cheered the US anthem, and then went BANANAS singing their own. Probably not long enough to react to, just something you might enjoy.

In Montreal the National anthem is song as a hybrid of both French and English. Part is done in French to start, then it switches to English. Sometimes in the English parts of Canada it starts English and switches to French when the teams are playing Montreal. Same for Ottawa in some cases.

6:44 - I had forgotten but that day that they found the second Boston Marathon bomber did have a bit of an air of the day that bin Laden was killed. Both suspects had on the run for a couple of days. 2 days after the bombing, the FBI found and released surveillance footage identifying the men then things got really hairy. They shot and killed an MIT police officer (MIT being just over the Charles River from Fenway Park) while trying to steal his police car and then bounced around other area towns trying to steal a car and stage a getaway. The first suspect was killed in a scuffle with police trying to apprehend them the morning of this game and then the second was found later that evening bringing to an end to the manhunt. Even us in Connecticut could feel the tension because we knew that they were trying to get away and could be heading any direction and where I am is only 90 minutes away down one of the major highways that would take them to New York and other points west. 8:05 - (Nick was right, it was different games.) What was so cool about this anthem moment, even compared to the first one and others done at international sporting events, is that while we insist on having the anthem sung during every pregame, even non-international ones, we as fans are generally quiet and reverent during the anthem. A lot of us have our heads bowed and singing from the crowd is not the norm. This day, especially in Boston, was different and it was a nice moment of community and solidarity. 10:57 - The crazy thing about this was that this was Vegas' first ever home game (you'll notice he said that the number 52 will never be worn; not never be worn AGAIN as is the case for normal number retirements; they hadn't even had a 58 yet). The shooting happened on October 1st, they played their first 2 games ever on the road, and this was their home opener on October 10th. This was the first ever major league team to play in Las Vegas too so the team became a huge rallying point after the shooting. This had no small part to play in them being such a super home crowd on their way to making the Cup Finals that first year. (It's still the largest mass shooting in US history. 2 more people passed away from complications of their injuries in 2020 so the LVPD's official death toll is now 60. The Golden Knights still have the number 58 retired through.) For context on the Humboldt Broncos, not that it makes anything better, they are in the junior A division of Canadian junior hockey which means they are and were made up of 18 to 20 year olds.
