Not targeting stars means not headhuntung them w intention to injure them or get them out of the game. It doesn't mean you can't try to target them defensively or strategically. It means no cheap shots.

It would be waay too easy to take out star players if they could be targetted. You made an analogy with basketball but this isnt basketball, what could someone really do to target lebron in basketball? In hockey you can give someone a really bad concussion and make them miss a bunch of games from injury and say you hit their star player and then they hit your star player (maybe with an illegal move) even worse and now hes injured. Now youre down a star player for the next several games and whatre you gonna do, go after the next team's stars and have them target your other star players?

Wow, I have seen a lot of people make the comparaison to basketball, but this is the clearest formulated answer!

Georges Laraque was not a great skill player but he is very well regarded across the league as one of the best tough guys to play the game. He was a gentleman through and through.

So much of this is about enforcing rules - particularly if the officials don’t call penalties. My daughter plays semi-pro hockey in Europe. In one game, a player on the other team took a couple of cheap shots at my daughter’s teammates. On the bench, one of the coaches said that she wouldn’t mind if somebody taught that player a lesson. Her next shift, my daughter went out and knocked her out of her skates. For the rest of the game. . . no further problems. In a funny sort of way, it makes the game safer.

You know how every culture learns something a little different growing up? I'm a Canadian that has never followed hockey, but this "Code" is the sort of thing we were raised on in life, not just on the rink. (MAN would I kill to get back to that... We are now literally SUCCESSFULLY suing comedians for jokes they've made)

You should react to "The Best NHL Dangles" and "Best Goalie Saves". They would be a good starting point for the skill side of the game.

Not targeting stars is a very big grey area in hockey, depending on how important the game is they usually won’t so usually most way through the regular season you won’t be seeing stars getting killed, once playoffs start though, all bets are off.

Not sure if someone has answered you on who that guy was that said “wanna square up?” was. That’s Georges Laraque, he was a long time heavyweight in the NHL and one of the scarier guys out there when he played. Most fighters are all part of a “fraternity” type relationship and they all are really respectful of other fighters. Most likely the guy he asked to square up was honoured that a guy of his stature asked him to fight. It’s almost a privilege when a veteran fighter asks someone to fight because they feel the other guy is worthy of a fight.

Canadians invented the today's versions of 1) Baseball in 1838 and 2) Lacrosse 1859 and 3) Football in 1874 and 4) Ice Hockey in 1875 and 5) Basketball in 1891. This modern version of Ice hockey was developed in Montreal, Canada in 1875 and has spread to the US and the rest of the world. This rough and tough full contact version of ice hockey is known as Canadian Hockey and has been later adopted by the US and is now becoming known as North American Hockey. The NHL, was not the original hockey league but is a combination of now defunct leagues. The NHL was comprised of more than 90% Canadian players but is now down to around 50% Canadian players. Canada is the reigning and ruling nation of hockey having more than twice as many international wins as the next closest country, Russia. The Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy, to win, in professional sports. Involves an 82 game season and a round of four series of best of seven games to claim it (min 16 to max 28 games). There are 32 teams, 7 Canadian and 25 US teams. While the Stanley Cup has not been won in Canada since 1997, Canadians always win the cup as most players on Stanley Cup winning teams are Canadian (ie. 2023 Vegas GK 19 of 20 were Canadian and Florida, 16 of 20 were Canadian). Checking: initial contact from shoulder down to above knees. Cannot use elbow, knee, head or stick to check. Also cannot hit a player from behind - on the numbers. Additionally, you cannot jump, you cannot charge and the puck must be there or have been there within the last 3 seconds for a check to be legal. Players move at speeds of upto 28 mph or 40 kmph, wear less padding than footballs players and are on ice. Hence, despite being approximately 20% smaller, NHL hits are 17% harder and then you land on ice. If humanly possible, hockey players get backup after a hit. Laying on the ice, diving, faking an injury is not tolerated by the league nor the players, including your own teammates. Hence, players who commit such acts are disliked by teammates and seldom respected or protected. If it happens in hockey it doesn't tend to continue. The puck is hard vulcanized rubber and is frozen for game play. Shots average 80 to 100 mph but can go as high as 120 mph, hence, the puck can break bones of you are hit, including foot and lower legs. Fights are illegal and players receive a 5 min penalty for fighting. To score a goal the puck must fully cross the red goal line in the net and cannot be kicked in or batted in with the hand. It can deflect off the foot or arm. Hockey consists of three 20 min periods. Unlimited substitutions where play does not stop to change players. The clock stops when play stops. There is no 'out of bounds' but if puck goes into crowd game stops and restarted using a new puck. If tied, there is 5 min sudden-death OT then, if needed, shoot-outs happen. During playoffs, no shoot-outs, they play til one team scores. Hope this helps. Check out wendel clarke my favorite player

Aaaaaaah hockey!!! Greatest sport EVER!!! I’m old enuff to remember “bench clearing’s”!!! I remember when goalies wore NO mask’s. Players didn’t have helmets. I’ve seen career ending hits for NO reason. It’s 3 sports. Boxing, skating & hockey. The beauty of this sport, in the playoff’s, when you’re eliminated, you shake hands. So, it’s sportsman like. Yes, squaring off happens. Usually at a face off. I’ve never seen players remove their helmet’s. So, I call BS.

I’ve played hockey most of my life. I’m 44 now and I still can’t move my elbow that far cuz of hockey. This is true. When I played hockey I was about 90lbs soaking wet everyone could kick my butt. But if something went down you’d bet i was ready for a beating. You do it for the team.

The rule about targeting stars relates to purposefully going out of the way to injure the star player. Like making unnecessary hard hits and basically trying to injure them. If the star gets injured on a clean play that's fine but it's when the opponent tries to injure your star on purpose. The Star and rookie rule is so true. Devils player Brendan Smith stood up Blackhawks star rookie Bedard who tried to get through and Bedard broke his jaw. Let's just say period 2 was an all out melee and took over 40 minutes to play a 20 minute period. However the hit was clean because Bedards head was down. Also all in all don't touch my goalie is another major no. It's also considered a big red flag if teammates aren't standing up for each other and coaches and fans disapprove when nobody stands up for the guy who took a dirty hit etc. Also this video is a bit old and players aren't allowed to remove their helmets Also just thought I'd add fighting isn't necessarily about winning but earning respect amongst teammates so a lot of the time rookies will challenge vets to fights to gain that respect usually though vets won't fight rookies unless they know that rookie has a few fights under their belt. Arber in the Montreal Canadians was a rookie I believe last year that was known challenging bigger guys to fights and winning them.

You can check stars, you just cant hit them enough to potentially injure them. It is always unacceptable to hit a goalie as they do NOT NORMALLY hit players. There were a few exception - Ron Hextal. Beware of goalies, they are a different breed. See '10 minutes of pissed off goalies' I used to be an all star goalie. I have 5 stitches over left eye, broken nose and chipped tooth from hockey. LoL long live Canada

Lmao. Targeting in basketball is throwing a little elbow 😂 targeting in hockey can literally end a career or even a life. Also nobody said you can’t hit stars. Hit them clean tho. Don’t take cheap shots because like I said. That can literally end a life in worst case like people seen not too long ago.
