Gender is based on socially constructed norms that vary across cultures and can include rigid gender roles associated with them (think man, woman, two-spirit, nonbinary, etc.). Biological sex is our genetic makeup (think female, male, intersex). Society often incorrectly conflates the two. Neither are binary constructs. Common example: Because someone is born with XY chromosomes (male), then they are more "aggressive," "slower" to mature, "shouldn't" wear skirts, "have to" initiate romantic connections, and "should" financially provide for their (often assumed) female-bodied partner.

It almost makes me feel like you/Brian actually agree with this transphobic rhetoric. As a queer person yourself you should have stepped in, or cut this bs out entirely. It's in no way professional or a well balanced video. I don't understand the point of always asking cis people about trans people. 99% of the time they are uneducated and end up just talking made up facts they read on the Internet from transphobic people. More shocking is the absolute embarrassment I feel for the lesbians who clearly have zero knowledge about queer history and their own bubble. Not even one of them daring to stand up for their community is straight up fucked. Either way, guy showed more sense of community, pride, love and education than anyone else in this video. Imo this video should be taken down and some serious education has to happend for Brian, so he can actually do his job. A moderator doesn't just make jokes and asks questions. Moderators should step in and guide a civil conversations, they should be educated enough to point out misinformation and step it. Which did not happend at all.

Saying gender is a social construct is such an oversimplification. While some aspects of gender are social (e.x in my culture men don’t wear dresses) that doesn’t mean you can change your gender by simply adhering to a cultural norm of the opposite gender. A masculine looking woman is still a woman. A man in a dress is still a man. Gender is based in biology and this is why trans people tend to want to pass. While they can’t change their biological sex they present (and often have surgeries) to look as much as possible as the opposite sex. Because if gender was truly just a social construct it would not have mattered. There would be no dysphoria, because you could just say you’re the opposite gender and that would be it, as long as culturally you are that should be fine. But that’s not how it works. At the end of the day gender is a bunch of stereotypes that do not matter, because we as humans would always see someone and clock them as either male or female. And if a trans person is passing well, they would be clocked as the opposite sex, which is the ultimate goal, I believe. The beanie guy was falling all over his own arguments because he knows despite how woke he is trying to be, it’s all a bunch of words and we aren’t going to suddenly see gender unrelated to sex. We might be respectful (e.x I don’t believe in the concept of non binary, but I’ll use whatever pronounce they want) and still have an opinion that is rooted in logic and biology.

Right? I wear trousers, I have my own bank account, my father does not own me. Across cultures & time periods that could be only something a man could say. Word definitions can differ among history & culture just fine in slang, for example. But it cannot be applied to man/woman. If it's a social construct, eliminate all part of biology from it: medication, surgery, and stop using terms like MTF/FTM. The entire gender argument has as much integrity of a wet paper bag. Beanie dude reminds me of all the "nice guy" fauxmenists. He can virtue signal "omg even I think men are trash!" all he wants. Only an ally when it benefits him. Reject him or speak about female rights, then get an r threat. Wolf in incel's clothing.

Your interpretation and stance is plain erasure of the myriad of gender variations acknowledged by people in indigenous tribes and other cultures throughout history the world over, try ACTUALLY educating yourself on what gender is before saying whatever you THINK gender is about or related to through your narrow and obviously very westernized lens.

I'd say something, people should always stop using so much vocabularies in their contexts or when explaining stuff. Vocabularies make it difficult for most people watching you to understand what u're trying to say, others may understand in different ways as well.. we should focus more on making others understand what we are trying to say than trying to sound like we invented the English language

13:40 Well I am an psychologist.. and there are 2 genders. Society has an opinion about what makes woman a women and man a man.. but there is a biological, genetical an even psychological difference betwen this two genders (different brains, bone structure and shape, hormones, skin..) Gender is not a construct, its not base of a filling.. there are some constructs base of gender/sex natural differences. That is all.

If gender if so cut and dry genetically, why do men have nipples? What’s their function? Why do men get breast cancer? What about intersex people? XXY chromosomes? XXX chromosomes? You’re a psychologist, not a geneticist and not even a psychiatrist. This is biology 101, 9th grade info.

"Psychologists" that are totally oblivious of surrounding societal dynamics and constructs are bad psychologists...Thats you.

I'm learning psychology! You're wrong. Sex is based on things like anatomy and hormones. Gender is an identity based on oneself. Gender is just a form of expression. These two have been separate for a while but recognized as different in the 50s

you want him to show everyone the research he has done in the middle of a video? unfortunately they only have 30 minutes, not 3 hours. he probably provided sources after the video ended.

@@_dashyy he said multiple times “do you want me to show you?” So yes please keep your word. She literally asked to see it and he back tracked.

I mostly agreed with the lesbian in the green sweater. Gender may be a social construct but it is informed by what your sex is. Modifying your body does not make you a man or a woman in the same sense that it has meant to be one for centuries.

It ain’t the best source on an individual article basis and with quality control. There’s some good there, he seems to be more knowledgeable than most people.

I mean Psychology Today is a reliable source, especially since he studied psychology so it makes sense he would use it. I’m saying this as a psych major myself 😂🙈.

Brian I respect the work that you put into these videos. But I do not respect the fact that you don’t seem to give credit to Jubilee for pioneering this concept on KZbin in the first place. All you’ve got to do is do a quick acknowledgement to Jubilee at the very beginning or very end of your videos. Or add it down below your videos in the description.

On the contrary I totally understand what the woman with the green vest was getting at during the gender thing, because you'll see someone and obviously register them as a woman/man - she/he despite what the person personally identifies as.
