I am 13 years old and a trans boy. I've been trans for 3 years. I visibly pass as a cis guy and unless I tell someone myself, everyone thinks I am. Even if medically transitioning was open to me I still would do that for me at this age. I want to start T in a few years (15-18), I haven't ever really been interested in bottom surgery, I want to get top surgery in the future (18-25 yrs old) I know the risks, I know the biology of it all.

My male-born child is 17 and told me last week that they think they're trans and they've been feeling that way for 2.5 years. Alongside getting them councelling to discuss their feelings and next steps, I'm also trying to do research to understand it all a little more. Videos like this has really helped me (this one the most in fact, hence me commenting, which I've never done). As a straight and pretty naive father, it's very hard to imagine my child taking on a different identity, but it's harder to imagine them suffering. When it gets hard, I just remind myself that my love for my child is unconditional, and one of my ambitions is their happiness x

@truth-om7iz instead of relying on what you feel is likely, look at actual statistics; going just off of gender-affirming surgical procedures, the amount of people who de-transition is very low. This would suggest that most people who label themselves as trans, probably are trans. Secondly, there is a lot of coverage of trans people in current news media because trans people are experiencing an upsurge in discrimination, and there are multiple anti-trans bills trying to be passed or that HAVE been passed. If you’re talking about fictional media, again, look at actual data. Trans people have VERY LITTLE good representation in the media. The only reason it feels like a lot to you is because you’re used to there being none.

I was trans curious since I was a little kid and hated myself for my sexuality. Not being taught about these things made for a confusing and painful upbringing. The cool thing about gender is that you can express yourself how the fuck ever you want. It’s a spectrum not anything black and white. Sex on the other hand is set in stone due to your chromosomes, but because of gender we are able to express our authentic selves. I’m 25 and don’t know if I’m trans or not- still trying to figure that out, but I have become so much more confident since I’ve been masculine presenting. I remember when I wore a “men’s watch” for the first time and how that little piece made me feel better about myself. Then, it was a game changer wearing boxers for the first time. It felt like a dirty little secret at first as if I shouldn’t have been doing it- that it was wrong but it also felt right. The first time I bought men’s jeans. I just love me, today. Don't let the labels over burden you. Just be you and you'll find yourself along the way. Try out different clothes. Whatever makes you comfortable. I will say that even in high school I wasn’t taught about LGBTQ history or civil rights, and I’m from California, as well as Gen Z. It’s important part of history and it’s important we let our queer youth know how our society has gotten to the point where there love is valid and difference between sexuality and gender identity. I feel like it’s one of the biggest points of contention between the trans community and everyone else. For that first question. Trevi is so right about trans girls and bottom surgery, but that’s one reason I don’t like seeing conversations like these with such black and white options for answers, because some trans girls don’t ever want bottom surgery, or would be dead if they didn’t transition young. Better to have surgery complications than be dead, right? And for trans men and trans masc people, there aren’t developmental downsides that complicate surgery. Getting on blockers could prevent the need for top surgery all together. Some people being well suited for medical transition starting in early adolescence, and some not being well suited to it, make it hard to answer with one statement of “I agree” or “I disagree”. I also think “should trans kids be able to medically transition” and “should they be able to do it without parental consent” should be separate questions.

As a t girl myself, I grew up with fear of being me, and was forced to tuck it away, yet some things I still did that showed and cried out who I am, and when alone At home I’d try looking the way I felt, and smile the only true time I felt myself, when I finally got online and tried being me, I was called motherly, loved, sweet, pretty, and I realized I could be free as me even if some had their opinions over not cis so don’t want to date, that’s ur preference even trying dates now is same and I let folks be, I’m open to it at the start only to know if they would reject or hate me, or willing to know me for being so open of myself. I married a nbny partner that let me at first be me, but after so many viewed me as cis and her as the t person they began to push me into a box too, and other things that lead to us failing and losing my own kids too, the fear of me being trans and open had to be hidden to DSS in fear that alone would take our kids, when I told them finally and showed myself they saw me as the real mother of the kids and my partner was the bio mom but acted like the other parent, they even directed me as such in court when we had to speak. I might had lost my job when I started htr because they was shammed of me and I reported them and left, but now 5yrs in, even if family isn’t gun Ho about it, they don’t try forcing me to be with them since they can’t accept me as me, and I let them be, I got online family and friends and even younger kids seek me out for love and support as that mother or sister ect and glad I can help folks, or nurture them into how the world is now (even if I got many bad days and reasons for negativity) I’m alive maybe to guide and shine on someone who needs me, so I live for that alone. ❤

3:36 - I think the puberty blockers are more harmful than the cross-sex hormones. I also think Trevi is very right in her answer to this one. The first puberty has to reach a certain point, *then* one can transition, so there can be proper sexual development and function. It is ideal to transition at around 15-17 honestly, to allow for maximal cross-sexual development without losing a chance for proper adult sexual function. I agree wholeheartedly that nuances and precautions have to be met as a minor for transitioning sexes but there has to be an allowance for some physiological change, otherwise time is wasted.

Because also puberty blockers weren't created for trans kids, they were actually created for kids who begin puberty too young. E.g. a friend of mine who showed signs of puberty aged 8. She was born female and is still a woman, not trans in the slightest. But she was on puberty blockers for years. And they left no permanent effects, just as the studies show too

Affirmative care just means that the doctor won't try to prove them wrong. We use affirmative care for everything mental. If someone says "I think I should get divorced", a psychologist isn't telling them "that's a mistake and here's why..." they say things like "why do you feel like you want a divorce?" The same thing happens with trans healthcare. The doctors focus on why they feel that way, and don't tell them they're wrong, but instead ask questions to get them to think about it from different perspectives, to really dig at the reason they think that way.

I think a lot of the trans people in thos video who say trans and gay rights should he separate dont know the statistics around sexuality within the trans community. The guy who said being trans is intersectional is so right. Trans people are 35% more likely to be queer in their sexuality than cis people are. So while there is a lot in the trajs experience that is different, theres SO much that is the same. Also the more we separate queer gender and queer sexuality, the less welcome trans people have become in queer spaces. I remember when gay trans men were fully welcome in gay clubs. And yet a year ago a friend of mine was hate crimes by a gay man in a gay club and rhe response from the venue staff was essentially "well you shouldn't have been in here pretending to be a man then". It was hideous treatment and definitely not the norm, but its so obvious that this sort of treatment is happening because of the separation between queer gender and queer sexuality and its just really sad

Exactly! And this problem began recently, too. For decades, the LGB and the trans were in suport and respect of each other's spaces and journeys. BY DEFAULT of our acronym being LGBT, we acknowledged that we each had our own space. as a trans person i do respect detransitioners (i think gender and sexuality are fluid and theres nothing wrong with changing your mind) but i do think its very common for the media to take a very small minority of detransitioners and use those stories to reflect the trans community as a whole, even though its a really small minority and the most common reason for detransitioning is bc of harassment or pressure n not bc that person was never actually trans. i think your story and identity is just as important and does deserve to be heard but not used against the rest of us to deny our rights, you know?

Yes obviously, but those questions can be answered in a grade-school-friendly way. Explaining to a child that your gender is different from your body isn’t extremely difficult to explain in a child-friendly way. And it’s definitely not more difficult than explaining other topics children learn about in grade school, like slavery or war. If we can teach children about that, then certainly we can teach children what being trans is??

It’s not that complicated for little kids actually. I have 6 year old boys and have told them that there is the sex which is the body parts you are born with (which are most often boy or girl parts, but sometimes a little more complex and may not fit simply into those categories) and then there is gender, which is whether your brain tells you you feel like a boy, girl, or something in between. Basically nobody knows better how you feel in your body than you do and if someone tells you who they are you should believe them.

My biggest issue is the uneducated misinformation spread about trans statistics. Your personal experiences don’t change the stats. And specifically with what Mich said about “kids aren’t medically transitioning its really only puberty blockers and a social thing” is false. There are numerous stories: a girl children at 15 got a double mastectomy, and later regrets it. Children are often not mentally developed enough to make these choices, choices that can and will permanently alter their bodies. There are assuredly trans kids who having a medical interferences will save the life of, the issue is whatever system we are using to determine who those kids are is broken. There shouldn’t be a single child getting medical surgeries and regretting them. A Psychatrist should be doing a thorough screening of them over the course of multiple years before making certain surgical decisions, and at the least many months for medication. Have detransitioners that are children permanently altered only worsens the movement.

I have a few trans friends, and some of them I wasn’t actually sure if they were trans, but I didn’t ask because it was none of my business. There was one time, I was making a lgbtq drawing with my team and I had to ask my friend if they were trans or not so I could draw their flag. A persons brain isn't fully developed until age 25. If people think kids (who can't even buy a pack of cigs or vote) can consent to irreversible hormone shots and major surgery to remove their body parts; the people who think kids can consent to physical intimate contact will take that as confirmation they are right too. like most things, i think teaching about trans people specifically in schools is just not a good idea outside of a highly case-by-case basis. are trans kids in the high schools of my area (or yours) actually emotionally safe among their peers (reference to increasingly polarized and bigoted politics being extremely accessible online, since i personally see that a LOT in kids around me)? how big is my area- just this one school zone, this city, this municipality, this province? are the teachers going to actually be trans or have intimate understandings of transness from a variety of trans demographics (bipoc, disabled, displaced, etc) in their own lives? if it’s in schools, are the learning outcomes/class plans going to be accurate to trans reality or would it be a transness that cis people find most comfortable that’s presented instead? do these schools do well teaching about racism? so many places within and beyond the occident and whiteness have trans people entrenched in their culture’s history, and colonization fucked their shit and continues to this day- i don’t personally think schools would do well with teaching about trans people if those same schools had unsatisfactory (or literally non-existent) teachings about racism.

I feel like medical transition or just transition in general should not happen with children, not because of really denying who they are but as they learn to grow and become adults it is a stressful experience and adding transition experience on top of that isn't a good thing. I feel like around 16 should be an age where the conversation of medical transitioning can start. Because until then we are learning about ourselves. I know a number of people who took blockers and realized later they weren't Trans but just a more feminine or masculine.

I think transgender people can be introduced to any age appropriately. For example, for younger grade students, there are wonderful children’s books that include trans characters explicitly or even just trans ideas (like not fitting in; being different than you look). For upper grade levels, it can be something discussed in health class/sex ed.

I was sure I was a boy aged 4. I was then told I wasn't and had no clue about transgender people so I was raised without any education or help. In a bit remotely shocking twist, I'm still a boy and I transitioned (ftm) as soon as I found out I could when I was 19, with my medical transition starting at 21. Scientific study shows that a child's understanding of their gender first begins aged 3. That doesn't mean everyone knows at that age, but yes it's very much possible and does happen.

Interesting views. When it comes to kids I don't think sexuality is something they should be needing to worry about so I don't see why any of it has. to be introduced so young. When they get closer to puberty and their bodies start changing is when these discussions are more appropriate. Basic math, history, spelling, etc are the main topics that grade school emphasizes. LGBT topics are quite simply more niche and make more sense at an older age. And it gives parents more time to bring up these topics in the way they want to. As for any type of medical transitioning (including beta blockers or testosterone), I'm totally against. I don't think the research is there, the thoroughness of care seems to be suspect, and it's just such a vulnerable period of so many teens lives that throwing in medication that may not be necessary, I see as a disaster. Honestly, I disagreed with most of them on many of these topics, but appreciate the perspective.

Transitioning children is really a vague question to be honest. What age do you consider a child to young? What age do you consider a child old enough? Why is 18 more mature and educated on their own body than a 17 year old? etc etc. What do you consider medically transitioning? Puberty blockers and HRT are 2 way different things, but are both considered medical. If I had a say when I was younger (age 5 I knew I was trans, going through puberty at 10 made me try to kill myself) you can be damn sure I would have transitioned medically. Now because of the shit education system of America back in those days, I had no idea trans men even existed till I was the age of 40. I could have saved myself a good 30 years of self harm, body shame, depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts. You have no idea the level of envy I have towards younger people who do get to transition now days. The same ones who still cry about how long they had to wait, at the age of 18 or even earlier. Lucky bastards. I just want to give a special shout out to bigots, haters and transphobes, you are the only reason I found out what trans men were or what gender dysphoria even meant. Your loud angry ignorant voices made this information possible! Also, there really should be 1 or 2 older people on these panels. I know it blows some peoples minds, but older LGBT+ people do exist (you know, people post age 20s lol), that can add a lot to these conversations having been through a lot more in their longer lives. sex education (as in learning about reproductive organs, periods, contraception etc) is taught throughout childhood at an age appropriate level. we already teach children about gender roles and sexuality subconciously from birth (boys like blue and cars and action movies and girls like pink and barbies and makeup, that boy is "pulling your pigtails" because he likes you, boys will be boys, girls have to follow a dress code at school and boys dont, etc etc etc) and honestly acting like anything outside of being cis and straight is sexual and inappropriate for kids is gross. there are ways to teach kids about diversity and compassion age appropriately.

Austin, they do educate on straight “things”. It’s called Sexual Education, Sex Ed for short. But since gay, trans, nonbinary people exist, and they’re not mythical creatures like unicorns or elves, it needs to be taught equally. If a parent doesn’t allow their child to be taught Sex Ed in school, that’s up to the parents. If it’s because it includes non heterosexual concepts, that’s just being bigoted, irrational and immature.

Just because their physical breasts were healthy doesn't mean they don't hurt the person who has them is mentally. Body dysphoria truly hurts people, and once mental health is affected, it starts to affect the physical body too. It's all about the pros vs cons. Also puberty blockers have been used for cis kids for a long time. Even though I'm trans, I get where you're coming from tbh. Even I look at the trans comunity sometimes and think "dude wtf."

Puberty blockers are not a medical transition. They're used as treatment for kids who begin puberty too young (e.g. my friend who showed signs of puberty aged 8) and have been long before they were used on trans kids. They just put a pause on puberty, they don't make any permanent changes.

I think it's important to learn certain concepts like consent and respect towards other human beings and their choices/experiences at an early age. you don't have to teach kids the details of transition or sex for them to know that there are all kinds of people on this world and that they deserve to live their life in a way that makes them happy. that children can have two dads or two mums or a single parent or having a step parent and that these kinds of family concepts can be just as loving and valid as a traditional cis hetero family where the parents met in kindergarten and stayed together 'til they die of old age. it's also good for kids to early on, know that they are allowed to have their own mental and physical self to respected. a five-year-old should know that if they don't want to be kissed by the creepy auntie, if they don't have to. that they can express their boundaries and identity and ideally they have adults around them make sure they are safe and respected for the person they are. being trans for a child should be something some people are and just as normal as a person having red hair. kids aren't stupid. if their uncle is suddenly their auntie, much happier and wearing a dress, they will notice the change and not talking about it or shield the child from something that's a normal part of society is just as weird as not answering questions of your child is noticing that their class mates might have a different skin colour or religion or differences in wealth. Addressing normal parts of society in a way that fits the age is totally okay. you wouldn't start with uni-level math to teach a child how to count, but that doesn't mean a child doesn't have a natural awareness of one cookie being less than 15 cookies. And just like that you wouldn't start teaching a child about trans people existing by talking about their medical details of transitioning. However I think the whole biological aspect is often much less of an issue for them as for adults that didn't learn in as a normal variation in humanity. the kids that I met that had trans family members were actually not that interested in it...other things like of the person was fun to do activities like playing or cooking or doing sports with were much more important for them. like... the social aspect of gender, gender roles and family is at that age probably more important than what genitals their grandma has.

Young people are experiencing menopause, sterilization and more because of these things and what's worse is they arent being told that these are the potential outcomes and children cannot even truly understand what those things will mean for them in 5 or 10 years. Most of information about transitioning/detransiting is only based on the first 5 years after transition with thr main focus being on the first 3 years yet most detransitions happen between 8 and 9 years ehen people recognize who they truly are in their 20s - by then so much irreversible damage is already done and even wirse if they've moved on to surgeries.

@@naomih1073 sterilization never happens only with hormone blockers, sterilization is removing the genitalia by surgical means, what can happen is losing fertility permanently and for something to really have permanent effects, it needs to be taken for about 3 to 6 years without stopping and there are not always permanent side effects, and at that point, the child is no longer a child and can make the decision on their own whether or not they want to transition.

This will sound cringe but when I was a teenager I was more than sure I was "not cis". Asked my parents if I can have breasts removed at 15, they told me to wait. I was broken that I have to wait? Wait for what? During that time I had a very stressful relationship with my developing body. When I was 17 I changed schools with less LGBT promotions and narratives. When I was 18 I was thanking my parents for not listening to me. My breasts became the symbol of a womanhood - something I couldn't accept back in the days. I am now a 25 years old woman and I am thankful that I waited - teenage years are very scary to survive especially knowing how most of kids don't accept their bodies
