Non-binary is sometimes such a hard concept for me to grasp, especially when they don’t dress much different from what a ‘typical’ female or male would look like. Idk as a girl myself i don’t feel hyper feminine or attached to my pronouns or what people precieve me as, so to have it be so important to them is very interesting to me. Maybe that comes across and very ignorant cis-girl of me but being transgender i can totally understand, the gender you are born into not relating to the body that you have. But with non-binary.. i can’t grasp how of why you would relate to having no gender at all
@shadyy004

plenty of cis people don’t dress like a ‘typical’ female or male. there are masculine women and feminine men. being nonbinary doesn’t have to mean complete androgyny. at the end of the day it doesn’t matter if we understand how everyone feels, it’s more important to respect them regardless.

Ah I totally cannot grasp non-binary too. I was always a tomb boy, I never wanted kids, and probably never will ( I'm hetero and happily married for 5 years btw) I like cars, gaming, I don't ware makeup, but it doesn't make me not a or less of a female, I am just not a girly female :D For me gender is sex, but I think that concept is natural because of my language, we do not have different words for sex and gender. But I do perfectly understand when people want to be/become another gender/sex. I just don't get the in-between stuff, aren't we all just a bit off of the perceived norm? Why the label is so important that you want to strip it and add a new one?

i think it’s probably less-so that nonbinary people are super rare to come by, and more that the majority of cis people are just assuming that everyone is cis. like, i’m nonbinary and i interact with people all the time. i see other nonbinary people out in public a a lot. part of being nonbinary is deciding how we make ourselves legible in a binary world, and honestly most of the time it’s safer and easier to forgo being perceived accurately and decide to not challenge or correct people when they see us as cis. i don’t think they were saying ‘ahhh people see me as a part of a lesbian couple and people are terrible bc of it’ - they were saying that its frustrating being perceived in a way that feels inaccurate to your understanding of self because other people have a much narrower understanding of the broadness of gender and sexuality. i think most queer people experience this in some way, especially with cishet people. it’s frustrating noticing this all the time but never feeling like you can do anything about it, bc you’re doing all that you can do.

as a trans teen, it sucks and makes me angry but i have no anger or malice towards the people who do it. i understand the struggle of traits associated with gender and i admittedly have messed up pronouns myself lol. especially if they don't know in the first place then it's no big deal even though it stings and makes me sad, i just suck it up. getting used to the whole trans thing when you're cis is a hard process and i appreciate those who try more than i can say, because they are sadly a minority.

I agree. Children cannot consent. And the vast majority of trans youth can't even get surgery or hormones until they're 18 anyway because their parents wouldn't approve of it. That doesn't make their parents transphobic, that just means they don't want to be the ones to make such a huge decision for their child. The decision to transition is such an important and individual decision to make, not a decision that your parents should make for you.

I think it'll depend on the maturity of the kid, how well can they understand. I don't think we should stablish an age. 18 just means they can do it despite what their parents think. I think it should be allowed, which doesn't mean they can do it without the proper financial and medical support. It should be possible, if they are deemed mature enough to understand and they know enough about the process
@laurabenevides7061
@laurabenevides7061 Жыл бұрын
To know when they are mature enough or ar certain or ready, i believe should be studied and discussed especially among trana people that did the transition and don't regret it. I'm not trans, so i have no way of knowing when it'd be ok to do it. I can be proven wrong, but i believe kid should have a say and be taken seriously
@azayzelderegis1655
@azayzelderegis1655 Жыл бұрын
@@laurabenevides7061 Kids can still be taken seriously while being made to wait until they turn 18. There are many things you can do to transition without the surgery, leading up to when you turn 18. In fact, many people don't ever get the surgery and they are very happy with their transition. There are parents out there who will coerce their child into being the opposite sex, because they always wanted a girl/boy, not what their child was born as. You can deny that this happens all you want, but it does indeed happen. Even if the cases are slim, well, so are the cases of trans youth getting the surgery. That's why I don't think the parents should have any say in such a thing. The child needs to have the final say, and in this country the only way to ensure that is to make them wait until they're 18 when they can sign off on their own surgeries and treatments. That's any child, for any surgery. Not just trans youth.

Pain gives you a sense of awareness that you would have never realized or noticed otherwise, it's that extreme discomfort within your body that is dysphoria and can only be relieved when changes are made that heal it.

It seems odd that Mandy goes to one of the most liberal colleges at Berkley and also seems to have the most issues with others, as a they/them. Something about their wording w/ every introduction, "I go by they/them, please respect my pronouns because if you don't then this isn't a safe space for me" is really off-putting, even to people who would respect Mandy if they weren't so adversarial.

The thing about transitioning at a young age is that you are still figuring yourself out, your brain isn't fully developed, and that leads to making decisions that they regret once they get older. Its a huge risk because it is permanent for life as far as taking hrt goes, and i know it'd be better to take hrt before puberty for future appearance, but I don't think that is justification.
@h4rp_xo
@h4rp_xo Жыл бұрын
as most of them said, being able to process and see what you're going through is an important part of it. it should never be taken lightly by trans people what HRT does to their bodies. for example, trans men get increased risk of strokes and baldness could start at just as low as 12 months of taking HRT.

Transitioning before puberty is just clothes, hair, and name/pronouns. No one medically transitions before puberty, only socially. They are are all changeable. They can explore and figure out what feels best. Then there are blockers (at the time of puberty), which pause puberty and give young teens a chance to see if this is the best path for them. There is also a team of doctors who are helping guide parents and youth along the way. You have to remember that natal puberty is also "permanent for life." Once a person's hips or shoulders have widened, there isn't a surgery to fix it. Once a person's voice has dropped, it's extremely difficult to change it. Doctors *will not* prescribe HRT before Tanner Stage 2 (puberty stages). Then if HRT is introduced, they start at a low dose, to mimic a cis puberty. They can stop without much permanent change if it's not for them. It takes time for the voice to drop or breasts to grow. Most of the trans youth who I know who did change their mind were like Bry. Either they transitioned to non-binary and then changed to the more binary (AFAB) male or (AMAB) female. Or they transitioned to the opposite gender, but then changed to non-binary. Some come out as non-binary first, just to see if their family rejects them or not.

I agree and I wish more people would talk about other methods of socially transitioning in regards to kids. Voice training, targeted muscle building, tailored fashion, etc. are all great, reversible (besides cost ig) ways to aid in transition that I never see people mention in regards to kids. For those that want to know what adult trans people think, here is a singular data point from a non-binary in their 30s: 1. I would date a cisgender individual. Strongly agree. I married one and have no regrets. 2. You should be able to medically transition before adulthood. Agree. I'm not a doctor, but there are doctors that handle such instances and they believe it is best for the mental well-being of their patient. 3. My teachers are accepting of my pronouns. N/A I'm no longer in school and didn't realize I was trans until after. 4. I have come out more than once. Somewhat disagree. Coming out is an emotional roller coaster for me. I'm in a very red state and would not feel safe if I was publically outed. 5. Cisgender individuals do not understand my struggles. Somewhat agree. They don't understand the struggles with gender identity, but people share plenty of the same struggles regardless. 6. Life would be easier if I wasn't trans. Strongly Agree. Look at the news. I'm trying to live a life while some politicians want to make us public enemy number one. People who don't know I'm trans have called me terrible things to my face. It sucks, but I am who I am.

I have been questioning my position on that subject recently and i want to know if i am being bigoted/transphobic for my perspective on the issue (at the moment i think it gives trans women an unfair advantage over cisgender women, biologically speaking). If there are any trans people who see this comment i hope you are willing to share your opinion, I'm asking out of genuine curiousity not from a place of negativity (i am a cisgender female) i hope no one is offended by my comment, i would just like to see things from another perspective.

Depends when they transitioned, how long, and what sport. I.e. if you're m2f after puberty for serval years in mma for instance you have a major disadvantage as you have heavier bones and less capacity to gain muscle in a weightclass sport so literally every opponent will have more muscle capacity and production than you Its really really specific
@martosty
@martosty 2 жыл бұрын
Not a trans person, but I have the same thought, even your etnical background can give you advantages in sport (potential muscle mass, ratio,..) and I don't draw a line there because the advantage is noticable but isn't that determined. Hormonal differences tho... Increases physical abilities so much more, it all depends on when a person transitions, but if it's after puberty certain bone ratio and muscle mass is already made, testosterone already had a big impact and will act as if the person took dope, so yes it is unfair from a scientific perspective, it just sounds rude, but evaluation through hormone levels would be more fair than 'seggs assigned at birth'

People who are unfamiliar or confused with this topic will look towards Mandy to gauge their boundaries. They will mirror Mandy’s behavior and vocabulary in assumption that that’s where their comfort level lies. Mandy may need to re-examine their views to ensure that they still align with what they request of others. Additionally, phrases like “that’s not what I’m attempting to do here” comes across as disingenuous. Mandy should already have an idea of what their intentions are. To build strong relationships with others, they will have to be able to communicate. I’ve certainly met people who repeat statements that are popular in the transcommunity without any understanding of its meaning. I guess they’ve heard it so much that it’s drilled into their heads. But then they have no clue on how to apply the idea. What IS Mandy “trying to do here?” Maybe Mandy should state their goals clearly and consider if it’s a realistic expectation. If they’re criticizing that people are confused already, ambiguous answers aren’t gonna help dispel any confusion.

As a medical provider it is scary to think that kids are allowing such drastic and permanent changes to their body, that are mostly both unhealthy and unsafe. I hope nothing but the best for these kids, but transitioning young has such permanent dangerous effects on health, that I could never support it. There is a reason that the alcohol age limit is 21, because the brain doesn't stop developing until almost 27. There is a reason you can't buy cigarettes until you are 18 or older, because these are substantial choices that can't be made as kids that effect the body longterm. However, we have somehow decided it is okay for kids to fork over $60,000 or more to get their genetically normal breasts/genitalia chopped off and to allow drugs and hormones into their body which we don't even know long-term effects of. Some of these transitioning drugs being used are also used to medically castrate imprisoned sex offenders. These decisions can only be made as an adult, when the dangers and permanence is fully understood.
