Do animals have empathy?

Empathy is the ability to understand and share feelings. Only a handful of species have this trait, including humans. A recent scientific study might have uncovered evidence that tells us why we feel this emotion - and it’s all thanks to a rodent.

Its interesting that these "scientists"... are doing an experiment about if the animals feel empathy, yet apaprently feel no empathy themselves towards the tiny creatures that they give a 'mild shock' to... and put in distress and pain. The way the lady explained the reaction as a response to stimuli... and down played it as just factual, shows clearly that she's not very empathetic at all. Despite that humans are supposedly the masters of empathy, we are the cruelist species on the planet.

Thats not really fair to the scientists. They have to remain emotionally distant from the subjects of experiments to not allow personal emotions containment their data.There is of course a moral red line on just how far these experiments can go, but I don't think a mild electric shock crosses it. We cannot learn about our world and the animals in it without this work and it can go a long ways in preventing suffering on a grander scale.

@@hgbugalou Its even less fair, on the animals. How would you feel getting an electric shock against your will all in the name of science? I can tell animals have empathy with out hurting others in the process. cruelty can't be justified.

@@ebonypegasus9864 Considering the good that can come of it and the fact the shock is likened to what a dog fells with a shock collar, I think this is acceptable. It maybe different if it was a constant shocks daily every few minutes, but that is not the case here. I agree animals have empathy, but science must be based on observations and real world data, or its not science, its just opinion.

@@ebonypegasus9864 They are only cruel if you get cheap ones or do not bother to set them correctly and use them properly. I know a professional dog trainer who has dedicated his life to dogs and he uses them. Like all tools, its only dangerous if you misuse it, but can be powerful when used correctly.

The lady that cleans the house was very close to my dog. Her mother died , she was crying one day in a chair and my dog was close to her and padding her , my dog was also making crying noises. My dog passed away 2 years ago, was a lovely Brittany Spaniel.

Wth? You think empathy is only a human emotion. Seriously there are so many videos of monkeys and other animals rescuing others. But I find it so insulting to think humans believe that they are exclusive owners to many cognitive behaviours. Animals understand their world perfectly, more so than us humans who destroy it so easily. They live in harmony, and that shows a level of intelligence far beyond our own.
