I use one for service rifles. The aperture reducer works great for a low power optic. Not only does it reduce mirage at distance but it also helps keep my eye centered in the scope. Most of the scopes used in the service rifle discipline don't have a side adjustment for parallax.

John, you're for sure hitting diffraction limits on your scope camera sensor. Not a big deal of itself, but at extremes, you're basically looking through a pinhole camera. Thanks for the vid.; love the work you're doing.

After seeing you repeatedly answer the question "Where do I get this?" I have to wonder if anyone really reads the "Comments" section below your video... I try to catch up with what you are reviewing every couple of weeks and the tips and advice are often very timely and helpful. Heck I even once and awhile through a bit of business toward some of your sponsors whose products you review. One of those timely tips was the video that you did on the homemade barrel cooler, I built one for minimal cost and it really does the job between sets during summer, taking as much as 35 degrees F out of the barrel. Many thanks John 😀👍 BTW: I have gotten an email order off to get on the waiting list... Have asked if I can have just one iris device with different adapters for different scopes since this is a magnetic attaching device. If you know then perhaps you can add an addendum to this video or post a reply in "Comments". I'm sure I can't be the only one wondering.

Thanks John. I'm using the pool noodle in the sunshade trick and a thinner piece of foam as well. Ditto on the roll sizer request.
@LanceX-hv3gr
@LanceX-hv3gr 3 ай бұрын
You can also make a sunshade or an extension to the one you may already have by taking the end out of a neoprene can/bottle insulator {Stubby Holder...Mate!} Just slips over the objective/sunshade of you scope. The "mat finish" of the neoprene will not allow any reflections as well as being a much cheaper item than a factory sunshade...

I've noticed this trick using the "scope shadow" on my spotting scope, especially on high power or in bad mirage. I've heard of old timers that basically did the same thing with scope shadow on their rifle scopes, especially before parallax adjustment was a thing. Basically using scope shadow as a "rear peep sight". I'm pretty good at physics, but optics get weird pretty fast

*You can use a dremel on an old scope cover and cut a SLOT across the opening. Start small like a 3/16" tall.* And try rotating it. That is more for lens aberration correction, but also does the same thing with mirage.

They also work for NRL22 or PRS Rimfire. They widen the range of what remains in focus at any given paralax setting. Which really matters for the up close distances of Rimfire.

"dialing back" the power is reducing the focal length, thus reducing the effective f/L change caused by a given amount of "air".

I wonder if you could use a scope camera and image averaging to "cheat" the random changes caused by the"heat waves"... Not in competition, but might be interesting to try in a static situation?

Further evidence to show that you don't "NEED" a hulking large 56mm obj lens. Especially if you're only shooting during daylight hours in decent weather.

Since this aperture is centered on the front lens, is there any consistency errors at the cross hairs when there is a lot of elevation adjustments say in a fullbore match or when shooting in big full value wind? In other words, is a 3MOA adjustment still 3MOA? BTW, awesome videos John!

It comes from cameras and it's called 'stopping down the lens". It creates a different field of focus which cause different lengths of focus to come into play.

But how would that really help you as in every pic I can very easily see the target. So doing a little I'm sure is enough for the people who need to just do stuff no a real reason just the dark and maybe slightly clearer lol

Yep john, now just have to talk to scope makers and ask them to try to eliminate the severity of mirage ,like purposely made f class long range scopes, i am sure that with the best glass and different tints and different ways to magnify the long range targets that they could come up with the perfect set up, if its just reducing the light coming in to the scope, then all they would need to do is experiment with different tints and convex and concave lens to come up with a perfect set up of a f class scope. 🦘🦘👍👌✌ Especially for hot and humid days, nothing worse when your at the 1,000 yard line and all you can see if the V ring bouncing all over the place. 🦘🦘👍👌✌

Already a "Thing"... Look at the Majesta on the March scope site or look at the review that John has done on the scope previously... Very $$$$ but I can tell you that they really do the job on a dancing mirage day at 1'000yd-1Km...👍 This is the one to get if you are into long range F Open or other disciplines: March X Tactical "High Master" Majesta 8-80x56mm SFP MTR-WFD 1/8MOA 6Level Illum Riflescope w/Middle Wheel & Shuriken Dial Lock D80HV56WTIX-GR-MTR-WFD "Speed cost money...HOW fast do you want to go...?" @@LanceX-hv3gr I know i have shot with f class boys in AU and i can say i was blown away by the accuracy of the weapon systems, sure expensive, but it does not have to be, if you get to know a good gunsmith ,who will tune it and blueprint all the actions to be perfectly squared up and then you can pick which caliber and she will shot 1 moa at 1,000 yards for sure cheers 🦘🦘✌✌👍👍👌👌 The best score at 1,000 was 48/50 and 4 v's and the rest were 4's and 5's and with a .223 so it can be done, plus i do not own a rifle or a gun/shooters licence used one of the f class rifles, ( nothing special other than good action and barrel with custom loads & even the scope was not a long range scope thats it) so it proves it if you know how to shoot and you have a really good weapon system then anyone can achieve what i did? 🦘🦘✌✌👌👌
