To answer that question: Yes, they do. But when a bass eats a minnow (or shad as some are), what goes through their mind? Do they pay attention to the lively action, scent, or color? In this video, I show you how bass react to LIVE Minnows, underwater in their habitat. I provide some great commentary, and I hope you guys learn something! Let me know what you think about the footage in the comments below!

That was an amazing video. I was not expecting such a different reaction to the two baits. I want to say how much I appreciate the variety and quality of your videos. I was struck by a truck as a pedestrian and thrown 40 feet. I live in constant pain and it prevents me from having a normal sleeping pattern. I am often awake late at night or up early in the morning so I appreciate having some good entertainment. Thanks again.

All I can say is that if you use artificial lures, find out what the fish eats on the area you’re fishing at and use similar colors of their food. You’ll catch more fish.

I guess I would like to see this with bait that more closely resembled a minnow for that water clarity and depth. A great video and super informative. Especially how little action the minnow had compared to the plastic version. Bass really all animals seem to be able to do a cost benefit calculation of yum yum vs effort vs nutrition.

to add to this i think color and shape may be more important than the action i fish small banjo minnows alot in public water same shape as a bait fish more so than most lures anyways how ever they come in stupid colors :/ when fishing the default colors i notice alot of bass short striking/following it a lil ways and turning away or darting up to it just to stop and stare at it however i colored a few a more natural grey color and bream colors and alot less fish turned away they were much more willing to commit to a more natural color bait the first minnow just sink to the bottom with very little action but the bass has no hesitation to eat it in the video
@jameswoods5336

If you notice, the first time the bass hit the live minnow, it wasn’t moving. Bass are predators, but they’re also wary. Realistically, bass will expend the least amount of energy possible to gain the greatest amount of food, (unless they are really hungry or just bite by reaction). A lot of times, the best way to move an artificial lure is to not move it at all. Fishing slow sometimes means catching fast.

Yo! Great video. Just wanted to clarify what a control group is So in an experiment, the control group is the group that does not receive any interaction. In a drug trial, the control group is the group that doesnt receive the drug. You can then compare the results of the control group vs the group that did receive the drug. In this case, the control group eould be throwing a the line, using the exact same rig, without any bait. The bait in this instance is the independent variable. The control group is the group where the IV is null.

Well there's a reason why most bass fishing tournaments have rules against using live bait, and even some lures that seem TOO lifelike... The reason I spend money on tackle is so I can take on the challenge of the sport of bass fishing! I'm sure there are tournaments where you're allowed to use live bait im sure, but I'm trying to do it like the pros so I can learn how to fish well without live bait when it's not available.

Bass have been known to eat a variety of things, including small ducks, birds frogs etc. However I seem to have better luck with lures that color wise fit into a basses world and are worked to imitate movements as close as possible to the real thing hence them not being interested in the light colored minnow offered. The worms I use have a much softer feel than most soft plastics, KVD Zero's and Zmann soft plastics.

*Love the footage on real live bait!!!* As a soon to be new fisherman this helps tremendously. Now I just have to wait for my Shimano 2500FC Nasci to get here and find a rod to pair it with?! So many choices but I’ve heard Ugly Stik Elite is a good spinning rod for $60… thinking of getting the 7/ft Medium as I’ll be Bank/Canal/Pier fishing mostly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated… should I go with a shorter rod or are there any alternatives under $100 that would pair with the Shimano Nasci 2500 spinning reel better? I kind of want an all around setup for my first fishing pole… probably should’ve gotten the Shimano Sedona in a smaller 1000 instead

the artificial stuff doesn't have eyes. I am not a fisherman, but the big difference I noticed when you threw in the "live" (not very lively) minnow was the high contrast black eye at the front. Maybe something to test.

Brandon Linker its not about the visual aperance. Its the stress and the information the bait fish sends out of his side line organ that signalize the predator that this seems like an easy snack. I lure don't have this and fish are able to learn to avoid things wehre they made bad exp with. So it is possible this fish was catched before on an soft lure and he knows its potential danger. Wenn have the same here in europe with big Pike. This fishes will never go for lures any more, you can throw them right in front of there mouth and nothing. Present the same fish a live roach or rud and he will smash it.

Hey man! So today I almost landed my PB on a live minnow. These fish weren’t hitting anything but minnows it was crazy so I switched over and landed 7 and hooked a 10lb fish I was tracking for hours but she shook the hook and got off. Live minnows kick ass
