Hi Tyler! The reason the turtles ate swimming turtles, is because they have evolved that behavior. They just instinctually prefer swimming turtles, a turtle on the ground is most likely a snapping turtle, or softshell, really all large turtles in general are too large, and have shells too hard for the fish, turtle hatchlings however, are a snack for pretty much anything. Every animal loves a good turtle hatchling, even bass, fir this reason only 1 in 100 turtle hatchlings will survive to adulthood. These turtle hatchlings don’t simply walk along the bottom, as they are too small, and swimming to the surface could tire them out. Instead they swim when they need to, and float most of the time, they love hiding out in the weeds as well. Anyways, in short, I think the bass is only eating swimming turtles, because it is hardwired instinctively to really only care about swimming turtles.

I dont think a bass' mind, or any fish for that matter, works like a human's. I dont think that they see sumthin and think "oh that's a bluegill" or "oh that's a crawfish" i think they just see something and automatically think "food" or "not food". Ecspeccialy when they're on a bed, they're more worried about protecting there bed then they are eating.

If you ever look at a turtle, especially a painted turtle, you can see the colors on the bottom of the shell. This is supposed to be a visual warning, similar to the black and yellow on a bee, which is there to say "I will hurt you if you mess with me." If a bass eats a turtle there is a very good chance the bass (or other fish) will choke on the hard shell. So when a fish sees those colors, it knows that that represents danger, so most fish will stay away from eating turtles

I think it's that when maybe a turtle eats it digs it's head into the nest/bed and kicks up its feet instead of it being flat. And when it was hovering it still looked more realistic. You should try that turtle bait with a very small hook and a short drop shot if you know what I mean.

Bass love slider turtles when they're first hatched , their shells are soft & bass eat 'em up. I cleaned a couple of bass late last spring & they both had small turtles in their gut. The turtle shells were very soft making it easy for a bass to swallow.

I've had big success weightless in shallow water. with deeper water i used a weighted hook. i think the key is keeping the bait horizontal as much as possible.

I think the problem is in every video you've worked the bait like a craw. You should have worked the turtle like a turtle swimming by, the lizard like a lizard swimming by, and the swimbait like a swimbait.

After watching your footage, I got the impression that all the bass were defensively biting the turtle to get it to leave. I saw no food source agression in all but maybe that last fish. Even that bite seemed more casual than what I've had with a KVD ocho.

I just made my own very lifelike soft plastic turtle. It is pretty small. 2 inches long if you include the tail. Either it will catch something or make a great key chain. Perhaps I should have researched before investing a lot of time into making my own turtle soft bait.

The time that bass eat turtles is when the turtles hatch out and can't fully swim. As hatchlings they can't fully go underwater so the bass hit them on the top of the water or suspended. Only well developed turtles can walk on the bottom so instinctively the bass will have less interest.

The only reason the bass ate the turtle bait when it was swimming was becauss it was a reaction strike or because it thought it was a fish. I believe the results would've been better if the turtle bait was tested in an area where there is a turtle population. I am no biologist, but that's just my 2 cents.

Last year i was fishing a local reservoir and saw a baby turtle swimming by my boat as i was watching it a huge largemouth came out of nowhere and swallowed that thing hole!!
