Several major problems I have with this segment. Yes, this issue affects black women the most however to say only these relaxers that target black women causes health/hair damage is a huge fallacy! White women who get perms, relaxers, and keratin treatments are also at high risk as well, so I do not like how this issue is solely perpetuated on black women in a negative manner. Furthermore we constantly overlook why most black women feel compelled to altered their hair in the first place, for more economic white acceptance. When you have schools threatening to hold your diploma for sporting your natural hair, ban you from teams, previous limitations in the army, curly hair looked down upon in general in corporate America places such as lawfirms,etc, it forces black women to result to using these chemicals so they do not receive any racial backlash such as being fired from their jobs or expelled from school. Black women also had to deal with an added amount of generational internalized hated of their curls/coils as well by their parents and grandparents and so own that was setup by systematic design because white people actually had a jealous towards black people hair. The jealous was so deep that there was a time period that cultures of black women such as Creoles were forced to wear head wraps to conceal their hair. To appropriately deal with most women altering their hair with these chemicals you have to address the root concern of racism within the workplace and schools first, than it'll be alot easier to get black women to embrace their natural curls and stop using these chemical products. Medically Dr. Oz might be on point but morally the way he is presenting it is not helpful enough. Altering black hair is more than just for vanity for alot of black women which is something Dr. Oz simply cannot understand...

Fibroids run in my family. We are Irish, Middle Eastern and Asian. None of us have ever used hair relaxers, and I have massive fibroids. It is shocking to me how so little research has been done for such a prevalent condition (80% or women). They should look at other more likely factors like industrially produced meats and dairy (that contain huge amount of hormones and antibiotics), pollution and even hereditary trauma. If this afflicted men, there would already be an effective, cheap and non-invasive treatment/cure by now.

We all have our own processes and journeys that lead us to a place of ending our relationship with some of these potentially products. We should be more patient with one another when it comes to those who relax their hair; there are a lot emotional and even mental ties many of us have to our beauty regimens. The conflict for the Dr. may be, she needs more data about that connections between the ingredients and ailments so she continues to relax her hair. Also, it may be a convenience thing for her, given her profession. It is a longer process to care for natural afro textured hair, particularly when it's long and thick. I've been natural for 10 years and I love it, "most of the time," lol. A lot of us were introduced to "the perm" when we were little girls. It takes time and courage to brake those habits and even divorce some of those negative ideas passed down to us from our community about our hair. Much love, Love🧡💛🧡

There is all of this concern and chatter amongst Black women about the possible danger of these products. So many are concerned that they have gone back to wearing their natural hair. And yet, not much research/testing has been done to prove them dangerous. Do we have to wonder why?

Dr. Jen I saw that segment on Dr. Oz today!! I don't believe this at all!! I think more research is needed in an facets on just why fibroids affect only Latinos and Afro Americans!! You mentioned your hair being relaxed so would the chemical produce fibroids to all WOC ?? That's debatable!! Thanks for always bring us current medical issues!! Much love and God bless all❤️💐😁🤗😘😍🙇🏽♂️🙇🏽♀️👼🏾🙏🏾

A so called professional on air with chemically altered hair showing up with no real news or help? The entire segment was pointless and failed to show the massive numbers of black women who have vacated relaxers out of a move to become more healthy. Those statistics are available. I can tell the segment was rushed and a lot of thought and effort was not even put forth. Hence the electronic white woman they used as a model to show the damage of a relaxer. It was electronic, how hard could have been for the avatar to be black🙄

How can we support further research on the effects of chemicals in hair products targeted to African hair on feminine health (specifically the development of fibroid tumors)? Are their crowd-funding efforts happening anywhere for this specific research?
@DrJenCaudle5 жыл бұрын
Idea Baker that’s a really great question and so important. We DO need more research! Right now I’m not aware of any crowd funding sources but there certainly may be some out there. But you’re definitely right!

No relaxers don't cause fibriods. Jordan sparks is not black and all you people need to ONLY worry about YOUR hair. White women bleach, perm and nobody is concerned about the chemicals they use. I relax because I love modern styles and management. I can easily run my fingers through my hair at all times. I don't wear weaves. Period.

No one said white women didn't do that stuff. The clear issue here is that none of its healthy and it needs to stop. Usually the first thing to go is your hairline.

It’s crazy how no one has an answer to this issue but this issue is not news, if it affects the majority it will have an answer. 2/3 black women and the majority of white women with it get help faster because their doctors believe them. 😢
