I worked with K-9’s for most of my career and I agree that praise is what they truly want. They are capable of great love. To get our praise is everything to them.

I lived with a family that had a dog named Tasha, seemed sweet, right? One night I came home to find her in the front yard shaking a possum to death. Once she finished that, I heard a bunch of little squeaks, and saw a bunch of movement around the area of the now dead possum. They were a bunch of little possum babies. Tasha then went to each one, picked it up in her mouth, crushed it, and spit it out. Now are you SURE they love other living beings???

My wolfdogs need me to take them on long walks! I need them to give me exercise on those walks for my health! I'm on my 6th and 7th wolfdog! I've had several border collies also, and love them also! I like intelligent dogs, and they are that! Treat them well, and they treat you well! I consider them like small human children, with many of the same traits and emotions! They have souls too, just not as far as us on the path!

I feel like these types of studies on dogs and cats are the equivalent of doing a study on whether the sky looks blue. You can do a study on why the sky looks blue, that's scientific information that's not readily knowable just by looking at the sky, but to research whether it looks blue when literally anyone can look up at it and see that it's blue is idiotic and a waste of time. The scientists doing these types of studies either have never actually had a dog or cat or it's been so long since they set foot outside of their labs that they've long forgotten common sense.
