Fake engine noise has got to be the most ridiculous nonsense I’ve ever heard! From my perspective, quietness is one of the best things about driving electric. I won’t go so far as to suggest that “you can’t make a car quiet enough,” but I’ll go with “you can’t make a car too quiet.” Now, I’m OK with noisemakers for safety in parking lots and such, as long as that sound is barely audible inside the cabin (and most are). In that regard though, we have to remember that a lot of gas cars’ idling engines are super-quiet. So, in my view, the laws should require a certain DB level in parking lots, regardless of drive-train type.

That sounds like an Atlantic article I read recently about how driving stick shift makes people more connected with the car. They aren't just driving their car, they are _operating_ their car.
@jessecortez94492 жыл бұрын
I make the comparison between operating your vehicle and being transported by a vehicle. This is a clear distinction that's become lost to many people today. The sound aspect is important on multiple levels. An old mechanic my mom use to go to was able to tell what was wrong with her car just by sound. Today that basically lost unless the car is about to explode. As for inside, the man inside would very often feel the vibration of the vehicle and that was most important for stick shifts. Insurance companies often times give cheaper rates for stick shifts because they know that the driver is fully aware of what he is doing and not just passively being transported and have the possibility of zoning out. Automatic transmissions were created to sell to women drives following WWII because most women drivers preferred being transported in there vehicles instead of operating their vehicles.

A base amount of auditory feedback, masking of unwanted sounds present in EV interiors, and pedestrian safety concerns will always require some active vehicle sound design and artificial engine sounds in EVs. I believe that these artificial sounds will continue to advance and become more 'pleasing' with generative sound design techniques that will create a more natural cabin soundscape and intriguing external noise. I do agree that there is still much room for improvement and that these sounds shouldn't attempt to 'deceive' drivers or copy ice vehicles, outside of sounding as natural as possible. In the case of the Challenger / Charger the noise thing is a bit gimmicky, but the truth is that there is a clear difference between a regular user and the user that's a car enthusiast and wants a performance oriented machine. The sound of a car is such a connecting aspect and it's part of the essence of sport oriented vehicles. Porsche made an excellent EV and yet you hear a GT3 hit 9k RPM and it sounds glorious and that feeling is just as valid to want to retain. There are huge wins for EVs, but we're also talking about cars and these machines for many are more than just 0-60 times and super assisted driving with lots of tech. Some prefer the engagement that comes from shifting, the engine noise, the steering feedback, the bias if it's not AWD.. all these things are extremely valid and if you can't understand it that's totally fine. It's not about it being EV vs ICE it's about the experience of the machine. A lot of people want the comfort, silence and benefits of an EV. However, some also prefer the benefits of an ICE car. We don't see a problem and say that is problematic and give up. We try to find partial solutions for the short term and complete solutions for the longterm. Yeah, battery components are the thing that is driving the cost high, and they are getting harder to find, but people are trying other stuff for batteries with even better results. There are working batteries that do not contain rare minerals anymore, we just have to figure out how to make them in bulk. And I don't quite believe that average household using twice the energy. Twice the electricity maybe, but twice the energy? That seems far fetched. We are getting more energy hungry each year, and one of our biggest problems is energy storage for the renewable energy sources. If most cars becomes EVs, and we can use their battery as a powerwall, it is a huge improvement in how we use the grid.

It's a safety feature that car manufacturers use because it's the most common sound and it connects with vehicles & pedestrians.

They’ve clearly taken the sound effects from the car in the movie The Wraith starring Charlie Sheen from back in the day. That car was a Chrysler prototype And sounds very similar to this, So they already had something to work with.

It's the range for me I travel a lot of and don't feel like waiting 35 to an hr to charge up the vehicle compared to filling up at a station

I like the idea of an EV... but the lack of Noise and now shifts, make me do not want to buy one whatsoever. I am an enthusiast.. so i like LOUD Engines... An EV is exactly not that... I drive ONLY Manual, so Evs are like automatic wich is unacceptable for me to drive. I ll wait for them to build cars for enthusiast.. so long ill drive petrol.

There is a very popular debate on EVs that they are not actually doing any good to the environment. We are not using gas, yes but from where the electricity will come if everyone starts using electric car? The measure source of it is Coal. So we came again to the point where we were already. Can you please give your opinion on this or include this in next podcast.

I don't want noisy vehicles. I have people that ride their dirt bikes down my neighborhood: it is the most obnoxious thing. I will say a little noise while in neighborhoods is fine. As a runner it helps to hear a vehicle approaching from behind or around a corner.

The engine sound isn’t through speakers, but tho through a acoustic “exhaust” system

I think you’re missing a big characteristic of the change management process: the macro effect of the change itself. Society currently understands automobiles (and everything else) through our five senses, and one of those are audible sensations in addition to the vibrations those sounds generate. A sudden social shift would have macro effects, like more individuals being hit by cars (because they didn’t hear them) for example. As you’re thinking about the historical moment of change, let’s consider how macro (and micro) effects are different from what we would initially anticipate.

My EV owning friend said it best: "there's something extremely... intimidating feeling THAT much power being utterly silent." It's as if the car is so powerful it's indifferent to your existence.

Car sounds aren’t needed in EV’s. They had a study where back up sounds are becoming nullified because people are so used to hearing them that they just ignore them all together. Same issue with car sounds being so common that nobody notices them anyway. Loud cars are only cool because they have big V8’s or tuned I6’s that making an EV make sound just irks me since quiet cars means less noise pollution. Ofc we won’t get that because of a false sense of safety in the stupid things.

Similar to when the first autos came out they were literal horse wagons with engines. And terms from the horse and carriage age still persists today, like the terms dashboard and “horse”power! Like WTF is the pulling power of one horse means to people today?

I don't think it's a speaker. It's either a separate fan or something connected to one of the drive motors. Leaf blower is a more accurate insult

Am I crazy? Why do they not map the regenerative braking to the brake pedal?? You could even have the first half of the pedal travel engage regen, and the last half uses the pads. Is there a car that does this?

I absolutely love what they are doing because there’s no EV that’s like this. They’re all the same. At least it will feel different. And it’s a coupe with a hatch, all EVs right now are sedans and SUVs. I just feel like once 60% of cars on the road are electric and the road is quiet, these will stand out for folks who miss the sound of an ICE vehicle.

You guys really should watch the Dodge keynote... I'm pretty sure they said that sound is not a speaker and I also doubt that 126db will actually make it to production. ..it is a concept car after all.

This is literally the same idea as manufacturers adding fake " shift points " on a CVT. The whole point of the CVT is to keep the engine at the most optimal RPM. But no, let's just simulate fake gear ratios to make people think it's a normal transmission and reduce the whole efficiency it was meant to provide

I'm excited for the Dodge EV simply because it's something different. It's not another very capable EV crossover like from everyone else, but an EV muscle car! It has potential exciting from the start. Even the base versions have potential be more exciting than the current base versions of Chargers and Challengers. And with it being Dodge it will be attainable performance for which people won't have to pay $100k+ (like Taycan or the Plaid) and it will look more exciting than just another model 3 performance. Personally, I don't care for the face sound. It's alright but I'd most likely turn it off after about a week and just cruise around in silence

The Dodge Challenger evokes the same kind of emotion that the Blue Angels do when they do a flyover. Your "intellect" doesn't want to like it, but every cell in your body lights up.
