Should an old person use the word “po” when addressing a young person? Always curious as to the term.
@hoygising2640
@hoygising2640 4 жыл бұрын
Speakno12, traditionally a young person would address an older person the “po” prefix. But, it’s also used based on status. A person who’s of a lower status may use the “po” prefix when addressing someone who’s status is above them.

I'm a Filipino myself & I think I agree with what the rasta guy says. We think the other way around & part of the reason is Filipino pride, they're able to attract foreigners because of how they looked. That being said, someone else's relationship is none of my business, but answering one of pea's questions, the only thing that foreigners do that annoys me the most is that some of them don't shower everyday. Please do us a favor & shower everyday when you come here, this place is really humid.

As I mentioned on another post, I have spent a lot of time in Northern Mindanao. A lot of the girls dont want a local coz they have had bad experiences with them (playboys) or they are lazy. On the flip side, I hste it when I see Western men be arrogant with locals. Sheesh, we are guests in their beautiful country. As a side note, I was told many times that I was the only Western man they'd met who was learning Cebuano. That was a big hit with the locals :-)

At the time a I was discouraged by the age difference and kind of laughed the idea off, now I kind of wish I had more seriously explored the possibility.

Well done Pea! Thank you so much for your insightful journalism and all the thought, time, and effort you put into it. I have learned a lot from Filipino's both male and female about my faults -- especially arrogance -- but always communicated in a tolerant, patient, and intelligent way -- and I appreciate that. It's helped me to see the light and become more humble and patient -- because they've never mirrored my bad attitude and never put me on the defensive. And in that way helped me change. So while Westerners may be generally physically taller than Filipinos maybe we should look up to you all in this way. Incidentally my nephew is half Filipino and he's 6'2". I look up to him too ;) (I'm only 6'). His parents have been together over 30 years but they are close in age and met here in the states where they live.

When I watched this video, I had two main thoughts: 1) I am an American living here in Cebu with my wife. We live in a Barangay were I NEVER see another foreigner. We have to go to Ayala or SM City Mall or S and R to run across other foreigners. I prefer to avoid them as the ones that stick out are in large age-gap relationships- we’re talking men in their 70s and 80s with Filipina girlfriends in their early 20s. That initially creeped me out. I’m really not used to seeing that before in any country. I asked my wife about her opinion. Her response was both tactful but I also found it funny. She said, “It’s their business.” I questioned “business?” She said yes and we both laughed. She saw it both as their own personal business and also as a “business” arrangement. Since then, I have become more tolerant of these age-gap relationships. It was just something very new and different to me. 2) The second thought I had was that after I moved here and we were married, I noticed a large amount of KZbin videos on topics like- 6, 10 or even 20 signs that you are dating a “good” Filipina. Or, similarly, what are the characteristics of a “good” Filipina. But what about being a good foreigner man? I feel what’s missing in terms of “informative” videos is the other side of cross-cultural relationships. I may be wrong, but I feel most foreigners assume they have all the qualities needed to be with a Filipina. It may end up being too strong of a “truth bomb,” but what I really feel is missing are videos such as 6,10 or 20 characteristics of a “good” foreigner man for dates, boyfriends, fiancés or husbands who come to the Philippines. Foreigner men could learn how to be a better partners to their beloved Filipina’s and... Filipina’s might be better prepared to choose the “right/good” foreigner that they might want to be involved with. It’s a two way street. It’s not all about finding the right/good Filipina. A successful relationship might arise when the foreigner is also a good man, himself. From my own experiences, it takes more than just a wallet and a set of promises to be a good partner or even husband to a Filipina. I feel this is a topic that is greatly overlooked- how to be a better man in a cross-cultural relationship with a Filipina. I’m still learning. I think such a video could help other men who are serious about being with a Filipina too. PS: I love your videos! ☺️

And for the record, when my wife came over here, I taught her the books and gave her the checkbook. If you aren't going to trust your mate with money, you should NOT be together. @Pea, please tell the girls this. So many warning signs for the girls... too much alcohol, no trust, threats... those are not healthy. I've seen good and bad from both sides. BTW guys, "Kuya" is a respectful Cebuano word for "big Brother"... Pea uses it for strangers as well, when she wants to show respect. All of my wife's friends call me "Kuya" and I love it... I also take it as a sign of responsibility to act like their big brother. :)

I agree.. In most South, East and Southeast Asian cultures, marriage is fusion of two families. A concept alien to most westerners specially Americans who thinks marriage is as easy as going to Vegas, sign some papers and then share address.

Great video Pea! I can't stand it when vloggers just walk around and point the camera at local people but have no interaction with them. I like to hear from local people about their daily lives and how they live. That way we can learn about their culture and this can make us more understanding of them when we visit their country. 😎👍

My experience in Thailand was pretty much along these lines, though Thai girls seem to have a healthy dose of desperation added to the mix and tilt heavily towards the transnational/opportunistic end of things, as some aspects of Buddhism even reject the concept of caring for the disabled or helping the poor ( the Dharma-Karma thing) . Family can have a greater influence in the relationship as well and sometimes I thought my girlfriend's mother was more interested in me than her own daughter; but that is another story altogether. I particularly did not enjoy the fact they are not very keen on foreigners who speak Thai, so as to be free to talk behind your back, right in front of you. They are also terrible about letting you know what is on any schedule and expect you to just go with whatever they say, especially when their family is involved. To me that was a deal breaker. I am an Engineer, I deal in absolutes and live and die by cause and effect, diligence and planning, even if there is room for changes in the plan.I learned the basics of Thai language even before going to to Thailand and became quite fluent in the two years I lived there and that gave me a window into Thai culture most foreigners are totally blindsided by. The Philippines have always been on my radar and as soon as this Covid-19 business allows, I will pay a visit. I have had many Filipino friends in the US and have yet to meet friendlier, or harder working people. The Filipina Pea has been a great source of raw, real information and the more I hear the more I think I should have visited the Philippines first, lol.

As a foreigner (USA), who has been corresponding with a Filipina lady, I was interested in hearing how the locals feel about us. I am in the older category (70), but my lady is older too (63) and a widow. I was hoping to travel to the Philippines in Oct., but that doesn't look promising now with the quarantine. From your interviews, it seems the locals aren't overly concerned about foreigners taking their younger women, so I'm guessing my "stealing" an older Filipina will not bother them. You have put my mind at ease a b out how I might be accepted if I come to the Philippine and settle down with my Filipina girlfriend. And by the way Ms Pea, I don't have a quick temper. Thanks for an informative video.

Pea, my wife is 30 years younger, she was not a barefoot girl from the provinces, she had a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. She came here to the USA and received another degree in Nursing. She handles all the finances and it is great; we have over, the past 15 years bought five condos. commercial properties, businesses mainly because of my wife’s contacts and intuition. We waited over a year after meeting to get married and I had to pass six interviews starting with her grandfather, then grandmother and parents and then great aunt and other aunties. It was well worth it and we have two beautiful daughters. Keep up the good work Pea, I share your videos with friends that want to go to the Philippines.

I suspect that the "short temper" would be better translated as "no (or a lack of) patience" due to the different pace of life where the foreigners are coming from, and that as they adjust & their attitude adjusts to a more leisurely pace of life they seem less "short tempered" to the locals. I suggest a regimen of Jimmy Buffet songs on the flight over... ;-)
