The psychological effect is much stronger. The fact I have some flaming arrows means I may have placed down pitch ditch somewhere, that puts fear in my opponent's heart and makes them weaker

Unfortunately tho I only use crossbowmen for defense so I don't hear those awesome effects anymore the way I used to.I wonder why they didn't make it so that crossbowmen can also shoot flaming arrows?Hmm...Hopefully they fix this in the ucp lol.I mean they're still ranged units with a bow sooo,it would only make sense right?Lol

@@Ugh718 if making sense is the criterion, that would mean flaming arrows deal 30-70% less damage against armored units compared to non-flaming arrows, crossbowmen deal less damage than they do in vanilla, have even slower reload rate but can keep their crossbow loaded for an instant first shot. And bolts, being considerably shorter and lighter than arrows, would suffer considerably more from the additional weight and imbalance due to how flaming arrows are constructed, making them theoretically flamable but practically obsolete when on fire. :D But on the other hand... we throw diseased cow carcasses to get enemy units sick, so why are there no poison arrows/bolts? Stick the tips into those rotting cow carcasses, or some good old cow poo poo, and you have an excellent and historically accurate way to deal extra damage with every hit that scratches the skin.

Stronghold Crusader is a great game but it has many flaws. UCP tried to fix a lot of them but there is stuff that should still be changed to make game more balanced eg: Shorter catapult range, Fire arrows do super dmg to shields and can lit them up starting fires nearby. Macemen having +50% dmg against heavy armor but taking +50= from unarmored melee units. Monks having a "boost" ability rather than super melee attack, Horse archers being less accurate while moving, Tunnelers having +100% moat digging speed, Crossbowmen would have shorter range just like in S2 etc. it would make different units more balanced

i always thought flame arrows did less damage because it remember it taking longer to kill some units. can you do a test on projectile speed maybe? it might take the same 15 hits for a maceman but if one is slower than the other then effectively it means it's got less dps

I'm no warfare expert but technically shouldn't they deal less damage? you are not igniting the iron spike on the arrow you are igniting a cloth tipped arrow that has alcohol on the cloth right? how does that fair againts metal armor? I mean i'm not complaining they have cool sound effect and are free.

You're correct, the flaming arrows would deal less damage typically. For one, flames might even go out from the highspeed travelling through the air, but also the heat would also heat up the metal tip, making it softer. Specially constructed, longer arrow tips with a sort of tiny mini-brazier builtin also did exist, but that construction also reduced impact against non-incendiary targets. Generally, added weight and friction would also reduce arrow speed, further decreasing impact energy. Against armored enemies, the little remaining heat wouldn't really matter (after all, medieval ages didn't have flame throw... - I mean, not except you were a Byzantine battleship equipped with hightech Greek Fire machines anyway), and against unarmored enemies, they hot arrow tips would instantly disinfect the wound (medieval medics used hot metal for exactly that purpose), and you'd still not burn after being hit unless covered in tar or something similar beforehand. Or, to make it short: Usage and effectiveness (both mechanically and visually) was rare and low, and even against straw-roofed hovels you'd prefer a couple good old torches - either in melee range, or thrown - over wastage of a few hundred arrows to hopefully light it on fire if you're lucky. Or incendiary ceramic pots filled with oil/tar, launched by trebuchets, ballistae or catapults. Or, if you were particularly cruel and creative, burning animals. Or... you just went for poison arrows, made by briefly sticking your arrow tips into diseased or rotting carcasses, excrements, nasty dirt, you name it.

While woodcutters may have similar melee combat strength, hunters don't (also, hunters have an (even weaker, but better than nothing) hunting dog accompanying them and can shoot at enemy units in non-skirmish gamemodes), and jesters most impressively don't. Tanners also don't, and blacksmiths are similar to woodcutters but potentially slightly weaker still, quarry workers somewhere in between iirc. Edit: And even woodcutters die from a single arrow while spearmen take 3, so obviously stats differ even there.
