I do think one of the magic with these games is we were playing them when we didn't really know or think too much about min-maxing. We played them how we thought they should be played and that helped a lot with the balancing. As adults that is just so much harder to do.
@jonathanoriley8260Ай бұрын
What's funny is that it's the opposite for me. When I was younger, I was better at min-maxing. Now I don't have much patience for it, because it feels like a needless hassle when all I'm trying to do is enjoy what little free time I have after work.
@bobemorАй бұрын
@@jonathanoriley8260 people certainly will have played differently, though I wonder to what extent it was you had so much time you almost naturally by trial and error min-maxed, rather than by conscious effort?
@jonathanoriley8260Ай бұрын
@@bobemor I was a pedantic child that was playing video games since the age of 3 on my grandfather's desktop. My first real game was Command & Conquer Generals when I was just 6 y/o, followed by other RTS and Grand Strategy games like Rise of Nations and Civilization. Feudalism II was a game I found around that time (never played the first one, and I remember playing the third for like 10 minutes and hating it). Beyond that, idk why its confusing for you that a young kid would have a lot of time on their hands to play those kinds of games enough to figure them out. Children notoriously have a lot more free time for inconsequential things like video games than adults do, or at least when compared to adults who work for a living. I myself these days work 6 out of 7 days of the week, and my days off usually revolve around completing errands. I don't have anywhere close to the kind of time to play games like I used to as a kid.
@bobemorАй бұрын
@@jonathanoriley8260 ah I might have phrased my reply poorly. I was suggesting there might be a link between min-maxing and time available. Effectively we all ended up brute forcing optimal play eventually if we liked the game enough!

I think the problem with feudalism 3 and Warlords 3 is probably just a single guy (or a very small team) being pushed to their limits. I do wish a lot of these guys had gone on to produce their own commercial releases like with epic battle fantasy and rebuild, since both do have a place in the causal strategy game market.

It doesn't matter who your enemies are just buy a molotov and then equip it to your character to which it doesn't matter if your character has a throwing skill or not since it's too OP. Use the same molotov to capture the same city then hire the molotov troops and bam. Easy win even on the hardest difficulty. They are also incredibly cheap compared to those ninja that can one hit units but can die easily.

Only now i found out a third game, and i am 26 years old. And you know what was the best thing? We didn't understand any text in this error, becouse as a young childred, our skill in english was very bad (Im from Poland), so there was a lot of trial and error, but it was fun! I actually LIKED playing the 3rd game,& switching between a sorcery-based lightsaber and a M60.Just because it's a weird tone shift compared to the other 2 games doesn't make it bad (just look at Helldivers 1 vs Helldivers 2). The 3rd game is also the one I came closest to actually finishing,but the last 2 unconquered cities on the map are freaking invincible. And give praise to the devs for having the courage to ask "what if guns & magic co-existed?"...That's not something a lot of fantasy writers do.It's always just elves & dwarves going around killing giant animals in caves or forests. Also,HOLY SH!T,this was made by the same dude as Endless War!?I LOVED Endless War!
