I wish I had found this channel a long time ago. My high school science teacher had a class guinea pig... Well, guinea pigs, but never more than one at a time. My sister, then myself after she graduated, would take them home over holidays. Now that I've seen these videos, I just feel awful about the treatment they got. There were 4 different ones (that I recall) over the years, but they were all alone, kept in a wire cage all the time, never given baths... just all around not great. My sister and I gave them a lot of love and attention when we took them home, though. That much we did right... I remember one was a female who had long fur on her backside that would always get badly matted and I'd have to cut them off all the time. Mind you, this was 16+ years ago, so I didn't know any better, but I'm wishing I had. Those poor piggies never lasted very long. *:(* This channel is awesome and so informative I absolutely love it. Thank you.

There's an easy test you can do, to check if they're dehydrated. If you pinch together the skin on any part of the body where the skin isn't tight (like, the scruff, piggy "love handles" area, etc.), it should bounce back to its original position almost IMMEDIATELY. If it takes a couple seconds to slowly revert, or it never does, and stays kind of in the same shape, your piggy is dehydrated. When you "pinch" the skin together, it shouldn't be hard, or painful, or even cause any discomfort, whatsoever. You just manipulate it like you would before you pick up a kitten by the scruff of its neck. Don't actually pick it up, though, haha. Fortunately, piggies don't get dehydrated as often as hamsters, for example. I don't think it's something you generally have to worry about. But just to ease your worries, in case you weren't sure, that's a test you can easily do with no discomfort to the piggy or yourself.

I have a collection of different size bottle brushes, the tiniest one goes right down the steel nipple and cleans it no problem. Attention to detail is the way to keeping these bottles hygienic and safe for our Furry Family. And I only use boiled water to soak their bowls and have extra to alternate in-between washes.(no scented soap) We don't want to eat/drink from dirty plates/cups, yeee-uck!! Bara littlepig they have unlimited hay and pellets, one of them has lasted 9 years and is still going strong and happy with this method Romaine only, I don’t even feed green leaf and DEFINITELY not iceberg I’ll do something like a whole carrot and 2 big leaves of lettuce one day, then 2 Later give them half of a red bell pepper (which is super huge) But when I was giving them smaller portions (2 baby carrots, 1 huge leaf of lettuce, and maybe some cherry tomatoes or green bell pepper) every single day, their poo was way too soft and stinky Plus after I cut back they actually have an appetite for veggies I was giving them daily and they just stopped wanting them.-. Waited a few days and they scarved it down For my piggies at least, how often I give them veggies has worked great.

This was posted a while ago but still relevant and I want to thank you. I was wondering how much my pigs should eat and whether I feed them too much because I’m so excited to try them on new things and see how they respond. I feed them sort of how I feed my kids. A few sticks of carrot, capsicum, celery, a large handful of kale, couple apple slices or strawberry tops (don’t have these too often just because I only shop once a week and the punnets last my kids one day so it’s gone anyway). Then I go out to the garden where I grow spinach and pick them a few leaves each, then one each of- lavender, rosemary sprig, mint leaves sprig and pansies. I was a bit concerned because even though they pee a lot, they never drink. I gave them a bowl in case they were unsure how to use the bottle but neither ever get used. I have a camera on my Guinea pig cage so I can spy on them since they’re still a bit shy and not once have a caught them using it. They have hay constantly, pellets 1/4 cup per day and every morning I give them a toilet roll which is shoved full of long grass I pull from the side of the house I never mow. They get a string of sticky weed put up in their cage every morning and they get dandelions as a lap time treat for hand feeding since they love them the most and can’t resist. I’m glad I found this channel and appreciate all the free advice.

When my boys drink they actually will pull on the nozzle of the water bottle as a tendency and they can always eat a little something and are always hungry it is just a matter of degrees and they love grass, romain , parsley, spring mix, cucumber, pea flakes, celery especially the leaves but with things like banana they only want the dried chips and they frequently when giving the stuff like peppers or tomato look at me like what are you giving me this forand turn up their nose at it. When feeding them they actually will step out of the cage to be getting the food right out of my hand and they usually would climb un me to come and get petted and attention besides just the food. They always are extra happy when they get grass and nice salads made especially for small animals that have a lot of different things in them like dandelion, chrysanthemum, peppermint, oat and other grasses and things in them including the leaves too. I always use bottled or filtered water when giving them water because where we live the tap water is not the best so I never give them just tap water at all.

Can you please make a video about what to look out for in guinea pig food and what you recommend
@CamilleOlivia4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. I'm new to the Guinea Pig thing and finding correct info can be a challenge. I typically run on instinct, both for myself and my Critters. So I gathered as much info as I could, then decided by way of my intuition. I've had my (2) boys for 4 weeks and they seem happy and healthy. They were not a bonded pair, so I kept a partition in the cage for a week. When it became obvious they wanted to interact, I took the partition down and watched closely to ensure they weren't fighting. Aside from the typical scrapping you'd expect, they did fine. They still have some days when they are a bit more aggressive but so far no one has been hurt. Finally, thanks for clearing up the water consumption thing. One of the boys drinks a LOT (he is the smaller of the two). The other seems not to need as much. Now that I know, I'll rest a bit easier. I've had dogs my whole life and they, too, have different preferences. Anyway, thanks for the info!

Grass is better than veggies. It is the closest to their natural food as you can get. I love foraging!

Cryptillian I like to take mine to neighbor's little window of low grass. He loves foraging. Especialy after it rains. I also sneak lettuce every once in a while. I have tried other foods, but he just isn't interested.

This video has been a life saver to me. As a kid, as much as I tried to research research research, I ended up with a misconception about how much veggies I should feed my piggies. Recently I learned I was feeding them to little. I come back to this video every year or so to make sure I haven't slid back to my old perception just in case, particularly since I have an old boy that's always been on the skinny side. My piggies appreciate everything I've learned from the LAGPR.
@angel84112 жыл бұрын
When guinea pigs "pur" it doesn't mean they're happy, it actually means they are annoyed. They don't like it when you pet them up around the face like that- especially when they're eating.

My Queen of Guinea Pigs😘😘🕵 I love how you post a video that i need to know as my piggies grow. I want to thank you from the bottom of my ❤! Omg! Some hay pokes my fingers...lol they were taking over the video huh...lol. I went to a boots and sattle place and got 2 regular trash bag full for 10 dollars and i get timothy hay put in a bucket and mix it up. The trash bags of hay is a mixter of grasses, hays,and some timothy. I give my piggies about AN 8th of PELLETS once a day. Hay mostly 3 times a day if they are not eating any veggs or fruit tahat day.. I read giving them veggs everyday is not needed????? So i skip a day or 2 at the most 3 but i cut everything down to their portions like a salad lol. My daughter said, wait until you've had them longer lol ull just throw it in. I give my guinea pigs apples mainly redish fuji but in small portions bec some apples dont taste sweet but still have sugar! I have a front yard i rolled out grass last year. I noticed they put a few different types lol im getting them an outside cage for grazing with a comfy chair to sun bath with them so i never for get them and the temp wise. I water my grass down i even wash my trees lol ya, but when u wait a bit and give them Presley back, they love it 😅
