the stock ds phat does have the brightness button, it just turns the backlight completely off when you press it. later revisions (CPU-20) support multiple brightness options, but it can not be utilized with the stock firmware, iirc if you run the ds lite version of the menu on a cpu 20 ds phat that enabled the extra brightness options?
