Autism and ADHD coexist at significantly elevated rates, and adults with both disorders face unique challenges. Symptoms of both conditions can resemble one another - one reason why clinicians typically screen for both during assessment. While research on adult autism and ADHD is scarce, clinicians largely agree on best practices in the evaluation and treatment of patients with both disorders. In this hour-long ADDitude webinar with Benjamin E. Yerys, Ph.D., learn about autism in adults, and how ADHD may complicate the picture.

This is very insightful and more clinicians and researchers need to take time to listen to the patients rather than just study from an "outside" viewpoint. It's extremely biased, limited, ignores the bigger picture, and thereby ineffective.

Me too! I've said those exact words.😲 I feel like it depends on how stressed I am. Qhen I was younger I felt weird looking at people. I practiced alot. It also did depend on the person. Some people that were on my wavelength I felt comfortable with. Looking back I feel like I was drawn more to mouth movements but I'm pretty sure I made eye contact. Now I have learned to enjoy it. Still, if I'm stressed or have eaten foods that mess with my mind and mood, I don't want to be looked at. Its confusing because I am not sure if that means I can't be autistic or what? Can anyone relate? The way I feel alot is, can't keep up with life, overwhelmed, crave order, but can't seem to get or stay there, struggling greatly with what to do first, so much to do I shut down, I forget what I should be doing first, I need simplicity and a straight line but this world is 🤯...I desperately need alone time, but will fail to recognize the source of my stress until I start yelling, finding negative fault with everything, shut down, stay home for two days and start feeling better. I can think, and I get motivated...ANYONE ELSE?😶

As far as masking… females have more pressure from family and society to not act irritated or angry or tolerance for meltdowns. We are forced at an early age to stifle that and made to learn “acceptable” behavior. My opinion on “loosing a diagnosis” is that people learn to mask. This may be helpful during your 20-30’s but it becomes mentally exhausting as you age and causes shutdown. Shutdown causes people in their late 40’s-50’s-60’s to lose jobs, relationships and become recluse. There is no cure. And ignoring the harm in masking is where you are going wrong in research for adults.

Yup. I was an architect and a professor for many years. I shut down in my mid 40s. I simply couldn't take it anymore. Now, I'm....well, reclusive! =) I thought it was a combination of anxiety and depression coupled with intollerable colleauges and adminstrators that drove me out of my profession. And it was. But I was recently diagnosed as autistic. That explained why I found things intollerable that everyone else finds normal. I was able to mask for decades, but it took an awful toll. I didn't even realize I was doing it. Now I'm retired. in my late 50s. An architect and a teacher with an IQ in the top 2%. And who's autistic and ADHD. Who worked hard for decades to make the world a better place through building and education. Our society doesn't want, need or reward people like me. It rewards conformity.

57 here. And it would be so gratifying to be able to be diagnosed, but it appears that I might have to emigrate or do medical tourism to get a diagnosis. There is no motivation in the sickcare system to diagnose adults with autism. There is no money to be made in it other than the meds and psychiatric treatment copays we have already fruitlessly subjected ourselves to. The fact that the cities and car industries are adding the harmful bright, white, LED lights to all the street lamps and vehicles is also adding to the problem. I researched it about 6 years ago, and there were a few optometrists who have been writing articles on how harmful these LED lights are to overall health and eye health in particular. I got diagnosed with ADHD a couple of years back and started medication. They also recommended CBT because i have developed a poor self image. In my first session the therapist says sounds like you have high functioning autism… my only concern is if you go looking for problems are probably going to find some. Doesn’t everyone have their issues and struggles?? I worry i’m just collecting labels which at the end of the day won’t change anything… i will still be considered rude, i will still be called stupid and useless by people. Sometimes i think I should just use the words other people will use because very few people will give you the benefit of the doubt in life. I was once told you’re at least two people, who you think you are and who other’s think you are. the only one that counts is who others think u are as they hold the keys to getting along in life. Say I offend someone, then i spot it afterwards, which is often the case. What do i say then? No no no you don’t understand i said that thoughtless insensitive thing coz autism. They still won’t want to spend time with me 🤷‍♂️ Anyway great talk!

@its just beth made an important observation in that as a young person females learn to mask, stifle their irritation and anger to be socially acceptable, so many of us are undiagnosed. The medical profession has failed us. Here's a little of my story, I imagine there's many of us undiagnosed spectrum folk who can relate: The social aspect of school was painfully intolerable so I dropped out and I never fit in anyway. Despite this, I did very well in my early career, I was identified as top management calibre for an international bank in my late twenties, by early 30's I was head of the canadian division. I was invited to be a partner by another firm. But I was struggling to mask my social anxiety and a raft of things that others seemed to have no problem with. Masking is exhausting, I started to crack in my 40's, venting irritation instead of masking and trying to please. Eventually i shutdown. Experienced job and relationship issues in my 40s-50's-60's. My 40's were a nightmare, I cracked amidst a storm of personal and professional challenges. I lost my partnership as I stopped wanting to leash my irritation and intolerance of people and bad systems. I was too tired to mask and this non-conformity put a target on my back. Looking back I wish someone had put me forward for a diagnosis, but in my day the "bell mental health' supports weren't a thing, but firing outliers was. Now I'm 60 and unlikely I'll get a job again.

I’m pretty sure I typically speak at his speed, and I didn’t grow up in New York, but in the Detroit area. In 2002 I unexpectedly got an Aspergers diagnosis as a result of finding myself in a crisis with serious health/medical problems between kidney stones and Meniere’s at the same time after being laid off July 2001, for what I termed inertia, which I discovered is a thing that’s seen in autism (I also have an autistic older sister, but she’s higher support needs and less independent, etc.) labeled autistic inertia. Due to long-term stress at work, and perhaps autistic burnout, combined with the mistake of not thinking to get records transferred from where I was diagnosed in 2002 (they destroy records after 7 years) and my nature combined with extreme work stress circumstances, it made sense to go through assessment again (ugh!) and to start, I was quickly diagnosed with ADHD (honestly, not a surprise) and now I wonder exactly (after 2 sessions to do differential diagnosis and rule out other things) where it’ll go, as I’m 52 next month.

AS: " Autism speaks, and thats a problem." This whole webinar was basically, "Sorry we have nothing. Keep looking." The anger this inspires cannot be understated. Of course there is more than one kind of autism, that has been readily apparent for decades just from reading a couple of the studies. Are clinicians really so unaware or too lazy to find out about the developments in their fields? You all keep searching for a panacea for Autism when it has been readily apparent there is none for decades. There is no one size fits all. So many promising treatments that could have helped a population of autism sufferers disregarded because it did not help another. How wastelful, how evil. Then you have the gal to mention a CBT type for adults then say "wait five years" Disgusting. We have lives, they are finite you cannot just stop the timer for bureaucracy. We need something now not later. I wish I could get my time back.

I'm a THERAPIST ON THE SPECTRUM, late diagnosed at 43, now 48. I'm looking to connect with other therapists who are late-diagnosed autistic. Autism became my specialty, real quick! I got my license in 2005 before the DSM 5 came out. Wow, was my education about autism and Asperger's minimal! I don't recall spending even one hour discussing autism in ANY class, on the college or graduate level. At that same time, I got diagnosed with dysthymia (remember that one?) and recurrent depression. My father (also autistic) was believed by mom's therapist to have symptoms of schizoaffective disorder and narcissism (his mindblindness is strong). My self-diagnosis in Honors Psych 101 was Avoidant Personality Disorder. It wasn't until my brother, seeking help for his social issues at work (nuclear medicine), started trying suggestions from a book about Asperger's in the workplace, that the seed of exploration was planted for me. It's all over our family for 4 generations that we know of.

To diagnose a person with ASP and/or ADHD is very easy. No different than getting a written estimate for an old change. And you know how that goes sometimes. They want to change the transmission and fuel tank while at it to make a buck. You need ro spend some 3 hours in a child’s indoor playground and spend at least $2700 for them to give you the estimate of your true illness so that you have a right to procure highly controlled obnoxious substances so you can rehabilitate yourself and become productive. They know what you already know. And as long as you know, you can provide for it or find a way. But they’d rather make you spin your wheels. Only some 4% of people get prescriptions for what they truly have or need to, the rest, they find another way. The truth is that whatever causes these disorders is a nutritional deficit inherited or acquired before, during or after birth,. And almost any mental disorder or balance in a hospital, crisis unit improves at least 50% within seven days at such a place even without any meds. You may be starving to death and/or from sleep and not even know it. All you need is regular meals and a good night sleep. After that anything else you need to restore your normal functionality is supplementary. It is something that you meed to get and/or do or that you are not doing or getting. It’s environmental. That is you may need to walk, work, play, buy and get, like sunlight, sunshine, or even a new love, passion or lover or a true vacation to or from such: The rest is juts commentary. Where I come from, people are not so fcuked as we are here in the usa just so you know. Here food, drugs, healthcare and crime, beauty, dating among are just a money making industry.

Ok so I was going to watch this but then read a comment about Autism Speaks being a vulgar 'charity'. I googled "autism speaks hate group" and after that I don't want to hear one word that they or anyone affiliated with them have to say.

@@5fingerjack he even mentioned ocd. My friend has bipolar disorder. It's a very scary kind of thing, I was worried for him once because he wanted to jump a window. Because he had a very hard time at work and he felt intimidated by the work E's we're giving him a rough day that day. I said don't worry bro I've been there I've had jobs and I've been rejected many times. I was with a company called Hume employment services it's where they help people with a disability people that have sicknesses disabilities and are in wheelchairs.

I am in the middle of watching. No wonder I am getting a vibe from him that I dislike. He comes off as arrogant and very opinionated, imo. I will still finish watching but I've had to put close captioning on and slow the rate to .75 because he talks way too fast for an audience to listen and comprehend. Doctors and lawyers need to take professional speech lessons so that people can understand what they are talking about.

I'm now 69, was deemed disabled in 2017 from fibromyalgia, migraines, anxiety, foggy thinking. Last year at 68 was finally diagnosed with autism (Aspergers) and ADHD. Two months ago diagnosed with small fiber peripheral polyneuropathy and occipital neuralgia. All I know all this time is anxiety and pain. You refer to "services" given. I've never received or even heard of any available services. Am I eligible for services of some sort?

❌️ I was diagnosed with both among other things, so it's easier for me to say I'm NEURO DIVERGENT... I feel that I'm trying to figure out which one is making act out of the "norm " Life I done from av typing age and has a real knack for languages, but I don't have a good filter, and I bulldoze conversations, and it takes a lot from me to listen to other people's conversations, because I see e writing in pictures, and I'm a huge problem solving, and it takes all of me not to tell them how to fix their issues. My brain knows I'm suppose to reign this wild horse, but my horse has a mind of its own. I also talk at a 100 miles an hour. I'm working on it. Then I've can't STAND repetitive noise, i can't STAND water sprinkling on me, or drafts. I can't keep time, I'm bad a keeping my finances together. Sometimes some things need to ABSOLUTELY one way - no questions about it, with other things I'm relaxed. I'm OCD - bathroom type germs throw me into a panicked attack if I'm not careful, I expand a lot of energy keeping information off I have touched something, life the bottom of my pants touching public restrooms' floor, then ib tin home and spray my pants with alcohol, it hydrogen peroxide. I'm distracted a lot, my whole schedule is thrown off, if there's an issue, life of I need to go to the doctor at 2 PM, I can't do anything during the morning. I can't sit still, do at red lights, I need to keep dusting my car, and rearranging stuff, touching my hair, etc. I wrote normally beautifully, but some times, I wrote gay and ugly, and it's the anxiety in me. I could go on and on... I'm a woman, so I'm EXCELLENT at masking... ❌️

Most tests are actually shit and very hard to do if you have asd and or adhd as they are to vague or to precise, they in my view has to be more of a discussion starter than anything else. ( probably because they are made by nt’s)

I definitely require support, and know I require support but I don’t have the resources or network to obtain support. It’s really hard and I’m like barely squeezing through. I’ve dealt with a lot of trauma and abuse, which makes it even harder for me. And I’m trying to run a business which makes it even harder for me, but I can’t function in a normal work environment anymore (harder for me to mask, phones drive me crazy). One day at a time lol.

I think doctors are missing the mark with those that have Aspbergers and ADHD. Level of interest and longevity while helpful is too narrow a descriptor. Those with ADHD will have been distracted and moved on, so seemingly, a great number of interests suddenly precludes one from an ASD diagnosis. This isnt being talked about enough and is not serving us well.

My Older Brother 🦂♏ & he has OCD. & it's really dam weird, I can understand his sickness a fair bit. I think my disability has the more complicated ways of life, because with me I sorta go into the depths of the detail of someone's and that's kind of white people sort of shine away from me because I sort of tried to interact even though it's hard on a different Spectrum level 🤷🏻‍♂️💭🤔 could be why people runaway and feel intimidated. Because after my Aries ♈ passed away from a thing called stroke paralysed on one side😔 after that life Connor got complicated then on from their back in the 90's🙇‍♂️.

I am not an expert, but I don’t believe the ADHD test was originally biased towards little boys as the principal reason today 4 out of five diagnosis go to boys and not girls. Scientist are very meticulous and subjective and discrimination or gender or race is far from their train of thought. I have both autism and add and I have five daughters and two sets of twins. At least two of them have what I have and one or two of them have either autism or add. Only two of them out of all have shown impairment symptoms to a mild to moderate degree or their Add is affecting their abilities to learn, concentrate and what not. And the point is that the only reason by which they were not detected in early childhood is that their attention deficit is rather inattentive than hyperactive. We all thought that they were just a little shy and introverted outside their comfort zone. Thus, the hyperactive factor which is relatively obvious in boys with add is only an augmented symptom that triggers the diagnosis or at least a valid suspicion that such little critters or langoliers may have ADHD. It my inexpert belief is justified, the actual diagnosis is equalized in all children regardless of race or gender. It means, that those gitls or women of either gender or whatever race are out there suffering, struggling or masking and absorbing their pain as many pain tolerant autistic kiddos do in my humble opinion.

What country is your research being conducted in? Are you limiting to USA only? Finding fact based treatment for adults with ADHD is nearly non-existent in the US. Clearly the lack of research on both conditions is due to no profit motive in helping people with lifelong difficulties by using the current "treatment" methods that focus on curing, fixing or correcting people instead of working with their gifts, talents and strengths in an outcome-based framework. I am disappointed in the minimal information about treatment here. They just sound like vague suggestions with no basis in science.

Agree. The limits of "neurotypicals" and their perspectives, experience, sociability are glaring but yet they don't see it themselves. Mediocrity and conformity are the highest values of this culture, because it makes good "order-followers". Then you just have to ask, cui bono? Follow the money.

Forty plus years ago those "level 2 & 3" ASD kids were kept at home or were sent to mental hospitals. Level 1/Aspergers kids were the weird kids that good teachers sent on odd errands if they saw them stimming too much or gone to another planet to give them a break to refocus... I liked when the teacher gave me several chalkboard erasures to pound on the outside school wall if some had been used with different coloured chalk, if the weather was bad then the important note to the principal (school secretary would send me off to the washroom and a drink of water) then return with the "answer" which the teacher put in the drawer "to check later". The bad teachers would demand that you look at them and not stim or she would smack your desk with a yardstick and yell at you (the early days of no hitting students). To survive those bad teachers we learned to mask while the good teachers taught us a few important social skills like don't tattle, don't belittle others, don't correct others after the others had left the classroom. In general we were not diagnosed, did not have learning plans, accommodations were by the teacher's past experience. New teachers were often a pain to put up with. Too often school was something we had to do that we only put enough effort into to pass each year. Then Jr High that I went to - 13 classes per grade of 30 students per class roughly divided by IQ. I was in the high IQ class in spite of just passing grade six. About 10% of the class was likely Aspergers only and 60% were Aspergers and ADHD (2e) and 30% were just smart - we were a pain for teachers that did not have a strong grasp of their subject or we found errors in the text books.
