Maybe for the next round of self-destructing books, you could try the first chapter of every book at the start or before unhauling. If you think that sounds interesting!

The idea for this book was so interesting and had a lot of potential, but it fell so flat. It was not good. It was also initially marketed as a stand alone, then ends on a cliffhanger for a sequel 😒

I dnfed defy the night about 50 pages in. I guessed the full story, including twists (my friends confirmed this). I don't think you're missing out, you guess fantasy plots waaay better than me, so if I can guess every plot, you'd be bored!

I've read Guilty Pleasures and really do enjoy that series, but I definitely don't think it's for you. It's open-ended so far and a lot of people stop reading it about book 8 as it becomes mostly smut with multiple love interests around then.

I read The Bone Houses (I almost wrote The Bone Clocks which you mentioned I read recently 😂) around the time it came out, and I had totally forgotten until I scanned through my Goodreads account the other day. While I thoroughly enjoyed Defy the Night, I don’t think you should be bothered about getting rid of it. Knowing that you like high fantasy and extensive world building, I think that it would end up being a 3 star / forgettable for you. (I say this because I’m thinking of when you read The Bright and the Pale. While they’re not wholly similar, I think that they have the same kind of generality. Though, I did not like The Bright and the Pale at all, so what do I know?) Also, having sampled Book of Night LAST WEEK and DNFed it, I already can’t remember what it was about - and I have a pretty decent memory - so I think that is another one that isn’t any skin off your knees.

I have read multiple David Mitchell books. For me, he rarely misses. And the breadth of styles and time periods is also super-impressive. No two of his books are alike. But Cloud Atlas isn’t where I’d start with him. Maybe Black Swan Green?

I’m gonna tell you the opposite of what a lot of people say about guilty pleasures. I love me some urban fantasy, there were years of my life where almost every book I read, was urban fantasy except for school work. And I have never been able to get myself to rea the whole first book of the Laurell K Hamilton series. I’ve tried multiple times because people have told me she’s so essential to urban fantasy. And I just cannot get into it. So honestly, as an urban fantasy reader, I wouldn’t suggest her for you. If I was going to suggest urban fantasy to try and convince you to become an urban fantasy reader, I would most likely suggest Patricia Brigg’s series.

I’m not really sad about any. I did love The Drowned Woods by Emily Lloyd-Jones but didn’t like the Bone Houses as much. But I can also acknowledge that my tastes are different! I will just say I’ve seen a couple Welsh reviewers say bad things about her books and far more Welsh reviewers say good things. As someone who grew up with a Welsh mother telling me stories and myths she got from my Grandad, I had a lot of childhood nostalgia for some of the references in both books. But that’s a personal thing and wouldn’t necessarily apply to other readers.

Cloud Atlas, all of his books are at least 4⭐️ reads. You’ll know if you like his style right away in this book. This is an adult author with thought provoking book. Deception - spot on. I liked it as it was a quick popcorn palate cleanser. Holly Black almost annoyed me as it’s NOT adult. Mid The Bone Houses was much better than I thought it would be! I liked the premise & it was executed well. I do the same thing, an overhyped book gets ignored. That sometimes backfires … I cite Gone Girl … I admit to liking a good book! And sometimes a good book is written in a genre I don’t like 🤷🏼‍♀️or is hyped for a reason. Meh, there are SO MANY books … books that prolly do excite … so unhaul away!!! 😁

I like Brigid Kemmerer because of the nostalgia. But am I certain that I would like the books if I was picking them up for the first time? Not sure. And I am still dirty on the death of a character in an earlier series of hers 🤣 Also, if you dont like RH or poly then Laurell K Hamilton is definitely not for you. The Anita Blake one was pretty annoying anyway, the Merry Gentry was better but only because I loved the faerie element. I love and hate Kiersten White. I read one of her trilogies and loved the first two books, I've even reread them and the characters are dear and near to my heart. But the last one ruined the whole thing for me, the characters started acting in ways that didn't make sense for them and the ending was just nope. So I wish I could be one of those people that say Kiersten White wrote one of my favourite books but the last one soured the entire thing for me. She's about to publish a book about Lucy from Dracula, so I'll probably give her another chance with that one.

"Saddest" about The Cloud Atlas. David Mitchell is original and brilliant and an excellent constructor of complicated books which hang together without much effort needed to follow the structure for the reader - but for me at least he's both someone I can only read when I'm in the right mental and energetic space, and he's almost TOO good because of the topics he tackles - the last few chapters of The Bone Clocks, which are set in an all-too-plausible dystopic near future, haunt me, and I'm not sure I should have read them for my own mental health, because they were *that good". and "most in agreement" to see the Laurell K Hamilton series going - I really like urban fantasy, but her series ESCALATE so it's increasingly annoying as the plots and the unnecessary/excessive spiciness (yes, poly, harem and reverse harem, and just... SO MUCH) go off the rails. I am just done with enjoying and seeing potential in the first couple of books then being increasingly incredulous and icked-out by the rest of it...

I love urban fantasy, but Laurel Hamilton series gets ridiculous after book 6 or so. Characters all become so obsessed with sex it’s all they talk and think about, the only motivation for these characters after book 5 or 6 is sex. Among each other. After 3000 pages, it gets boring. Good for you for unhauling this one!

Anita Blake series turns into reverse harem, I agree the first books are good, but after a while the romantic drama gets OTT and she starts to seem very author self-insert. One of her many men is a submissive stripper shifter, and he has purple eyes and long luscious locks. *eye roll* I liked Anita at first but then she turned very self-righteous and she also seems smug about her harem lifestyle, and there are also some recurrent bouts of guilt that she deals with over the course of the books. Just turned into no fun. I noped out of the Blake series the same time her Merry Gentry books came out because I could see how self-indulgent the writing had gotten, just tons of sex and violence for those who literally get off on that.

You dodged a bullet with ‘The Bone Houses’, can confirm as a Welsh person it doesn’t read true. It reads like bland YA fantasy and the world building is so poor that it doesn’t even feel like it’s based on a real life country.
