I have been a bus driver for 45 years and still enjoy my job. I am a practicing Catholic. This story is little long so please bare with me. I used to drive the bus to one of our large hospitals and to our cancer clinic here in Edmonton, Alberta. Every morning I would pick up this lady say "good morning" and visit. She would get off at the cancer clinic. One morning she got on the bus and informed that her husband had passed away. She began to cry and I too began to cry. She informed me that she so enjoyed the morning bus ride and looked forward to riding the bus to visit her very ill husband. She gave me a beautiful card of thanks. It is very true "Life is what you make of it" you touch so many people with small acts of kindness. Thank you Father!

I think the issue with the fantasy of saying “I quit” is not that people don’t want to work-anyone who’s been unemployed for a long time will tell you otherwise, and most tests of things like UBI show that people are happy to work even if they don’t need to to live-but that so many people are forced to put up with terrible, unfulfilling, poorly-paying jobs just to survive, when they would much rather work just as hard at something that payed next to nothing but just wasn’t, well, soul-crushing. The Fantasy of quitting a job and never working again is there, but if people gave it real deep thought, most would realize that it was just the specific job they had that they hated, not working itself.

We were created for meaningful purposeful work. Unfortunately many workplaces are abusive and exploitative and down right toxic. Even just surviving and behaving ethically beats you down.
@helens89774 жыл бұрын
Good point. This needs discussing. I was nurtured in my early years by Christians who believed that industrial action was contrary to Scripture (obey those in authority etc) although I don't accept this now and belong to a Union. I believe the calling for Christians in these circumstances is to challenge bad working practices - and to model humanity and kindness both to ourselves and our co-workers.
@mrspock85354 жыл бұрын
I agree. Many workplaces have become very corrupt. Back stabbing overall dishonesty and inner company politics are a very real part of the modern workplace
@RobertFallon4 жыл бұрын
So true. Too often work places are too hierarchical or bureaucratic for a low-ranking worker to effect meaningful change. Then he or she is made to feel like a cog in a corrupt wheel, which is an unhealthy feeling, and perhaps a sinful pursuit. Work places too often embrace mediocrity and refuse good ideas given in good faith. And so morale sinks. Pay is exploitative and insufficient. Policies are burdensome and misrepresented. Work places are often cauldrons of unethical and demoralizing behavior. They lack accountability and now often lack health insurance, severance, loyalty, and other measures of good faith. They wear ruthlessness on their sleeve. Work is not only about a good attitude, Father. It is often a dilemma where one chooses between feeding oneself and doing work one does not believe in, which is a kind of self-betrayal.

Not being forced into wage slavery ( meaning someone rents you for most of your time instead of owning you 24/7, and many bosses still act as if they do own you 24/7) because you have to in order to survive is not the same as wanting to do nothing, or laze on a beach. If you had your survival needs met, you would still do meaningful things with your life, contribute to others, to the world, and to society, just without being forced into an awful job that sucks out your soul and takes 90% of your waking hours. I've been lucky to be educated, so now I can do a job that helps others and is not physically exhausting. But most people, including me before higher education, do something they hate, just to survive, often wearing out their body in the process. Being a laborer slave is hardly the peak of fulfillment or flourishing as a human being. We certainly shouldn't build our whole identity around being a good labor cog to keep the elite class happy.

I have been blessed to have enjoyed my past jobs. A waitresses, nanny, toddler teacher, preschool teacher, then there is the volunteer work at an orphanage, children's hospital, with the young adult ministry and the Church choir. I do feel blessed. I know a lot of people do not enjoy their work. I remember how hard it was to find a job and how blessed I felt when I was able to work. The pay was not always the best, it has been very hard at times, but I do smile a lot at work. I have been criticized by co workers because I am always so happy and I try not to complain to my coworkers. One asked me, why are you so happy all the time? I responded, because I have a job. Yes, but your a waitresses. Yes, i said, this job, helps me pay for gas, books at college, i am able to go to school full time.I will try to be the best waitress Is can be while I am here." I got a lot of tips. I know it was because I was upbeat and happy to serve others. Once I even served one of my college professor's family on Mother's day. I was a bit nervous since it was a big table (easy to get things wrong with a big order). I didn't think she even knew who I was since the class was so big. At the end of the day I got one of the best tips ever. The following Monday she called me over when class was over, and said her family had a wonderful time. The food was great, she loved the great service. That actually gave me the courage to raise my hand in class and ask questions or respond. There is so much I have learned through hard work. It is a blessing.

I just started my first job during the pandemic and still doing it but it’s a little overwhelming... so sometimes i dread going to work. I have to wake up early, stare at documents and the computer the whole day and when I finally come home, I’m dead tired. As someone who’s never worked before, it’s hard to adjust... However, what Father Casey said in this video makes a lot of sense and shifts my entire point of view on work. We need to work because that’s how we discover ourselves and our God-given talents, bring more meaning to our life and to the lives of others and how we bring God closer to ourselves. Indeed, we become co-creators with God. Doing work which He wills for us and knows we are capable of doing is also one way where we can all the more glorify Him. So the next time, i find myself complaining about how difficult work is, i’ll keep this video and it’s lessons in mind. Thank you Father! God bless!

Damn good advice Padre Casey.That is why I tell students to be sure to go into a career they enjoy and would want to do for free. If you become a lawyer for the money but you hate law, then you'll have a big house and fancy car yes, but the house will be where you sleep and eat before going to a job that makes you miserable, and the fancy car just carries you back and forth from a a job that makes you miserable.Even if the money isn't close to some of these big money-making careers like Doctor, Lawyer and stock brokers, but as most of your time is in vocation, your happiness in that job is worth far more to the satisfaction and health in your life than that extra money.I'm lucky as I knew early on I was born to teach, I have a passionate love affair with my subject, and nothing makes me happier than when I'm teaching. If I were to win that 900 million lottery, I'd probably travel the world and see everything i ever wanted to see for the rest of my days. If you think about it, if everybody (or a lot of people) tried to find a fun job or just stopped working, some essential jobs wouldn't be done. Even though certain jobs are looked at as less important, pretty much any job is important. I work in fast food currently and have worked in a couple other restaurants (one fast food, one higher end). People keep asking me, "don't you want something better?" Sure, I do. However, I am good at what I do currently and I serve hundreds of people every day. It isn't the most fulfilling job (it is often draining and not fun). I am content with what I am doing currently though. If everyone said "I want to get a good/fun/interesting job" a lot of places would be out of business because they lost their workers. Do we need fast food? Not necessarily, but it is a good service, especially to people who have busy lives. We could slow down as a society and make everyone cook their own food, but a lot of people would not want that. I'm going on a slight tangent, but not everyone can have a dream job. I will probably not stay in fast food my whole life, but it isn't a "bad" job. Also, fast food workers (not all of them) are hard workers and I think that jobs like that or retail jobs are underappreciated.

I think that discussing the alienating nature of most modern work without mentioning the intrinsic harm of unchecked commercial and industrial practice undermines any value we can obtain of certain knowledge that our labor can be an exaltation, a form of devotion, to god. I doubt most people can see the fruits of their labor destroyed and mismanaged, benefiting the few at expense of the many without feeling incomplete. Further, in a very literal sense many of us labor for the sole purpose of increasing the wealth of some individual, rarely ourselves. Our work does not even marginally help others, many are forced to antagonise there fellow man and others receiving this vetroul come to loathe their coworkers. I cannot in good faith except a rhetoric that ask each person to give there all to there work indefrent of the final product of their actions.

Ahh communists work really hard , I can't speak for communisms merits or deficits but people work very hard in communist countries. Infact in its purest form it should work like a convent or monastery
@BautiNogueira.3 жыл бұрын
What? If anything ¨Comunism¨ its about working, the labour force and the return to the means of production to the people, social justice, etc...Capitalism its quite evil if you dont live in USA (now Im not saying communism make sense, either...but its not like Capitalism doesnt do TERRIBLE things in a daily basis)
@domusardet4961 Жыл бұрын
@@lolasonner5051ah yes, liberation theology - the lie that Jesus was a communist. Communism is actually the inversion, if not the antithesis, of Christianity. Communism is based on forcing humans to do things against their own will, while Christianity is based on humans voluntarily doing things. That's why Every. Single. Communist. Country. Ever. could only keep their people by force while monasteries are the exact opposite & only accept willing volunteers - and even then, those must prove over years that they aren't changing their minds in order to stay.

Fr. Casey -- Thank you for encouraging us all to further the greater glory of God in every part of our lives including work. I think you are also pushing towards the idea of work as something that can be an integral part of a flourishing life (eudaemonia). Would you agree though that most people's objection to work isn't work itself but the domination they experience at work by their bosses directly and their employers indirectly? If Christ came to free all of Creation from sin and death, then why should we rejoice is offering up in sacrifice a third to half our days to living under the domination of others who can withhold the necessities of life from us? The work you describe sounds more like the choices of free people to turn their gifts towards the service of others and the width and breadth of Creation. How is this compatible with accepting obedience to others, not because Christ has invested them with authority, but because they hold the power of life and death over you through the resources needed for food, shelter, medical care, etc.

Humility is the foundation virtue upon which, all others and the spiritual life are built. Pride is the chief of the deadly sins and the ultimate root of all evil. If we are to utterly submit our lives to God, we must be able to do so to the degrees that those placed over us justly have So long as it is not leading to sin then it is our Cross to bear. We are to pick up our crosses and follow our Blessed Lord daily. We are where we are for a reason, trust that God knows what He is doing in your life. Consider looking into the Interior Castle by St.Therese of Liseaux of the writings of St.Josemaria Escriva.

Employers are helpless without their employees. How you deal with bosses, managers, coworkers, and fellow employees is not always a choice, but still contains a fair amount of flexibility. Also, bad employers drive out good employees. Despite the obstacles, good employers should actively seek alternative employment rather than suffer a bad employer

Father Casey, this video harkens back to your video on experience. While I agree with your premise, I must also say that as parents, we do what we must to feed, clothe, shelter, and educate our children. Honest work is honest but can be a drudgery at the same time. Think of the many women who clean others’ homes or wash their clothes or work the overnight shift. They do it for their family. Not everyone is privileged to be a doctor or nurse or teacher or priest. I myself am a retired teacher. Please be aware that experience does count. Sometimes heavily.

I apreciate your wisdom, sometimes is hard to go to work, to be on time or to fulfill all your task. I have done diferent jobs (Im actually writing this in my break from one of them) Sometimes is hard to see it as a gifth, many times its feels like a burdeen out of tiredness. In my personal experience itsreally hard, most days I get to sleep for an hour or so (inbetwen jobs) But God gives me stregth! Praise be the lord as He and He only sustains me!

I have only recently become a subscribed of your channel and thoroughly enjoy your videos...until this one. I have a chronic neurological illness and am unable to work due to the pain, and fatigue that go along with my condition. I can't really do much of anything really. My goal today is to have a shower but I haven't managed to achieve that yet and it's 18.36 hours already (I'm in the UK)! Your comments about the importance of work and contributing to the Kingdom hit a painful nerve and left me feeling rather useless (but I'll get over it). You made "sitting on a beach with a pina colada" sound like an empty and pointless life (ok, I sit in a chair with a diet coke actually) but for some of us that is our life. I hope you don't really think I'm pointless?
@helens89774 жыл бұрын
PurpleNana your life sounds really difficult. I know someone in a similar position who cannot work due to chronic health conditions, despite having great ability. I do know however that she contributes great value to others through her wisdom and compassion and often in online groups. Please don't feel useless - remember the widow's mite: Jesus so greatly values even very little if it is all you have and given in love.

If we look at whatever we do as what we want to do vs what we have to do we fulfilled by what we have chosen to do. All work has elements that are drudgery but all work has elements we enjoy doing, even doing it the very best we can. We should thank God for the elements we enjoy and offer the other elements as prayers.

People who work from home have no idea how much I hate having to commute 30 minutes to work, but I should be grateful that I have a vehicle, that it's not 1 hour commute, and that I have a decent job. It's hard to imagine life in other's shoes.

As an OT I subscribe that meaningful occupation is very important, in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Without meaningful work we become sloth. But these occupations can be gardening, cooking, volunteering. A lot of jobs are just to get money home for a family. And that is noble, but not necessary. When in a tough job with little human contact and lots of hours that isn't fulfilling reflect on Jesus suffering. And look to st Therese little way

I love being a teacher, I would still be a teacher - but I wouldn't be a public school teacher. I would have my own school. I truly believe that teaching is my vocation even though I'm not Catholic. I would travel more though.
