Even at work, i tell to my colleagues that "experience doesn't translate quality" hence do not hesitate to hire new graduates. Edit: one of our managers saw a 30 years experience retired applicant. She was super excited to found such "gem". When the applicant was hired, he was super lazy, pushes the younger staff around and refuses to get trained. Thankfully, that guy felt "unsatisfied" working with us and resigned.

Excellent points! Br Casey, I think you have knowledge of marriage and family the way a teacher knows children even if she doesn’t have her own. She’s able to make a sort of meta analysis of children and is often the first one to spot when a child is not developing like other children. With some experience she can begin to pinpoint why-learning disability, abuse at home, etc. The parents may care more for sure, but they are often too emotionally absorbed in the situation to make objectively wise decisions. There is room for both subjective and objective voices at the discussion table.

I've often thought the true barometer of a leader is their ability to pick the best advisors and have an ear to listen. In the neurodiversity community we have a saying - nothing about us without us. That means we need the helping professions to actually listen to us and our experiences. It's not that we are 'experts' per se but that we know better than anyone where our true struggles lie.

All of us have to carry our own cross. None of those crosses are exactly the same as others'. But couldn't it be so that having experience in carrying the cross, (acceptingly and faithfully knowing that this is inherent to love meeting darkness,) provides the required experience to have a meaningful conversation, in which we discover that it's in the carrying of the cross that we get united, thus being helped to bridge wide gaps?

Thank you for helping me understand why I question what someone says (or acts upon) in regard to particular issues--when they have NO idea what it's like to have to deal with those issues on a daily basis. While I inherently trust our leaders, I also find too many of them have never dealt with the things they are making decisions about. If they have never been poor, how do they "understand" the food or housing needs of the poor? If they have never been a single parent, how can they possibly truly understand what a single parent can live on in terms of wages? One of our local high schools has an annual "lesson" in learning what it's like to be homeless. They have to live in a refrigerator box outside for a 24-hour period--and do the best they can to find their food for the day. They have a lesson on being a parent by being "saddled" with a mechanical "baby" that cries at random times during the day and night that can only be "stopped" from crying by being fed or have its diaper changed. The students involved suddenly see that being a poor person (who seemingly has no responsibilities like work) or being a parent (who seemingly effortlessly gets through their day) is not something that just happens but is instead a lifetime of learning and growth. The results of these "lessons"? Our community's out-of-wedlock births have dropped and our graduation rate is almost 100%. Experience, as you say, isn't everything--but it sure does help!

I'm a white man who has been treated unfairly by police, and I've experienced female police mistreating female loved ones. I'm not sure why the brother is saying white men cannot know what it's like to be pulled over and feel concerned we won't be treated fairly, very strange thing to say. Aside from that this video is very accurate. There are differences of concern for racial minorities whether such concern is taught by culture or based in authentic partiality, so as a white man in America I don't know what it's like to be a minority, but I sure do know what it's like to be concerned I'll be treated unfairly by police. We should be careful with our words, they affect how people perceive themselves and others.

To me it reminds me of the problem of subjectivity v objectivity in dealing with problems. It doesn't matter if you have experience or not you can get trapped into a narrow self-enforcing and need people with outside, more objective views to wake you up. I've had a few episodes where I've been convinced that I've a great idea, asked for advice and then been shown that it was absurd. :-)

When you said "unless you go through it yourself, you'll never fully understand" it reminds me of my near death experience five years ago. Before that happened I could only imagine what that must have felt like. I have heard from others who have gone through that in their life. Although I never thought it would ever happen to me. But now that I have gone through it myself I understand what they meant when they went through that. Because of Our Lord I am still here and I see things way differently than before. I knew life was precious before that happened to me. Now I cherish life more than I ever did in the past and I feel stronger too. I am eternally grateful to Our Lord for what He did for me. I think of Job when it comes to knowledge because well as Our Lord put it that you are a human being with limited understanding. We don't know everything like God does and He knows us more than we know ourselves. The Creator knows about everything He has ever made but that is one of the things I like about Him. He never ceases to surprise me no matter what I am going through. Great video with very good points.

I also went through a near death experience and feel very similar to you. I was young when I went through this experience and I grew resentful of God. I was 10, scared, and angry that God would do this to me. As an adult now who chose to go back to the Church I am SO appreciative of the insight I gained from what I went through and it has made me more empathetic to others. I was flatlined and the doctor said that my situation was very, very grim, but it just wasn’t my time to go. God kept me here and guided my doctors. It is nice to stumble across a comment from someone who has a shared experience with me. God bless you ❤️

Humility is a must for experience and also knowledge, so we can use it to help others and not to take advantage of it for our own good. Father, this is one of you best videos yet (and your stuff is routinely excellent). Early into it, I was reminded of an article written in the late 60s for Sacred Heart Messenger (now defunct, I think) by the late Anglican priest Robert Farrar Capon. It was a review of ex-priest Charles Kavanaugh's book "A Modern Priest Looks at his Out dated Church" in which he suggested that celibate clergy are worthless as counselors for married couples because, since they themselves have no experienc of marriage, they cannot advise those who are. Capon countered by saying that, on the basis of that argument, people could also tell him, a married priest, that his advice is invalidated by the fact that his own marriage is so happy and successful. The point here is that if people don't like the look of your window, they'll pick up any stone they can find to knock it out. Keep up the good work, Father, and God bless. fr. Martin Farrell, op

You have a valid point. BUT it is an issue when a priest tries to be a priest AND a psycologist AND a councelor. Sometimes they need to step down and say hey! This thing going on with your family or with your sexuality needs to be adressed by a professional in the field. That would also apply to anyone giving advice about a topic but in my experience in church sometimes I believe, looking back, the priests that i spoke to wanted to be helpful but they ended up being a bit too paternalistic with their advice and did not point to the professional help i needed.

Some people have the ability to conduct a (dispute) conversation by listening, asking questions, giving hints and examples. And this regardless of their profession. Likewise, these people may be able to recognize if they themselves are too close to the "problem" (personal direct close or kinship contacts with the parties concerned) and may then give advice to seek professional help.

I agree completly on the importance of experience in coming up with clever and impactful solutions, however the role of a leader (in my opinion) is not to come up with solutions. Leaders must have good judgment before all other things, their job is to judge the situation correctly and adjudicate between the diffrent proposals to ammend the situation. I actually expect my leaders to put their personal experience away when making any kind of decision. Instead what i would conclude froim this video is that leaders must consult with people of lots of different backgrounds and experiences to have an optimal range of solutions to choose from.

The word “experience” is too broad. You would need to classify and specify the good and bad experiences, and even the neutrals to make a good point. In this way you can categorize them. And the good ones can be an experience that is everything. Like for instance in abortion: What happens when the mother is left to choose her child or her life? Do you give her that choice or do you take it away? I am more pro-life than I am pro choice. But in this scenario, I would give the woman her choice. Because even I empathize with the fear of giving my own life to another. I would not know what to do if I were her. This one particular scenario is different among the rest. You cannot use it to justify women who abort a child out of convenience. This is a different category. When a woman chooses to sacrifice her life out of the love for her baby, then that would be everything because she is giving away all her life if she has the freedom to choose* such a noble act. The “experience” here is love. If you force her to sacrifice her life, that would not be love. But for a woman to make such a commitment out of love-it is encouraging and inspiring.

the Church should be able to offer another path so that mothers who choose to nurture their children feel supported not left with seeing abortion as the only way out. I feel that many an abortion was caused by the righteous saying how sinful a young girl is.

Thanks Br Casey!. I have never really understood the argument that you mentioned. No one claims that the only valid Oncologist is one who has had cancer, why should someone make a similar claim about priests and understanding marriage.

A fine presentation, Father, and a finely and fairly balanced argument. But alas: “… it is imperative - not optional, not it would be really nice in an ideal world - imperative that all forms of leadership have a diversity of experience.” If only this was understood and practiced amongst the higher levels of the Church's hierarchy.

great video , why cant we understand all , empaths can sense others feelings ? i find some new moms trying to be experts in being a parents and instead lashing out on social media and when some one w out kids (but has experience w kids ) gives advice the new mom shuns her or him because they assume they know it all . in my life i had learned those who dont have kids or doesnt drive has experience in those things ans ones who have kids ans drives for a living doesnt . every reaction is an opposite reaction

Ooh brushing up against the political realm I see. I appreciate your insights. It's pretty silly that people have decided that you aren't allowed to speak about a subject unless you are directly affected by it. I liked your doctor cocaine addict analogy.

Great message! What I dont really agree with is the imperative to have diversity in leadership roles. How would you "force" diversity in a way thats fair? Sometimes it just isnt possible, and you work with what you have at hand. Also, what is diversity exactly? Because that word tends to be used to refer to gender and race only while Id argue that people that might look the same are still extremely diverse in thoughts, personality traits, opinions, experiences that shape their world view, skills, priorities etc. And that diversity is extremely valuable as well. People are more diverse than we think, because we are all unique individuals, and that is the beautiful reality of the human experience. Also, if you believe divesity is imperative, what do you make of the lack of divesity within the clerical community?

Mili Capomasi I don’t know if Father said “force”. Yeah, as a black person, that’s no good either...just welcome diversity if there is a chance.

Our priests, aside of their profound theological studies, have the miraculous grace of the very presence of Jesus through the Sacraments. I need more humility to fall in the most divine grace and presence of Jesus in the presence of our priests, our Church and our Pope.

Priests have lots to offer as they have to remain celebate in their position and always forgo the world in many ways. That’s not easy stuff. Experience teaches in a minute but books teach in theory . In my opinion priests can help us hold the truth of our lives and man us through and out of the trenches of life. When u are in a storm u need a navigator to deliver you out. That’s pointing to the truth- the person Jesus Christ, wo comes thru locked doors to redeem us and give us abundant life.

You have spoken very wisely. Thank you. you spoke too about how we all have blind spots and how humility and listening is really important. this is so true too. one thing you said really struck me above others . it shows how we can unconsciously not see some things that obscure our vision. you mentioned that “as a man i will never know what it is like to be sexually harassed by a superior and have that come between me and my job.” please God you never do, but it is not necessarily so that a man may not have experienced this. it has happened to men . lots of men. it may not be something spoken about but it does happen and has happened. I just felt i should point out that your general points whilst quite valid are also filtered by our assumptions and experiences as well as our training.

Correct my dear sir....take your swimming classes in the pool wet with the coach next to you....never learn to swim through a correspondence course, like say religion...my dad said this while I was in high school...years ago when I told this to Robert Kiyosaki, the Author of Rich Dad , Poor Dad...he congratulated my dad and me...the right way to bring up kids he said.

I see your point but then it would be best to diversify the advice by many who have “been there, done that”. I say this because my experience as a white, immigrant female is different than even my sister’s experience as a white immigrant female or my cousins or , most definitely, my mother’s. So one experience isn’t enough. I am reminded of a history professor who walked in to class one day with an armful of books on Thomas Jefferson; each author had a slightly different point of view on one thing or other. To get a more complete understanding of the man, the times etc, the teacher challenged us to learn from more sources, not less.

I’m not sure 🤔 I agree with all of your statements . I enjoy your videos. As a member of a minority group I understand better prejudices against minorities better than someone that never experienced it . Experience is not everything but it helps . I can write a book about racial discrimination. Someone that grew up in an inner city has more experience in dealing with economic difficulties than someone that had everything served in a silver platter
