I am seriously considering transfering to a different flight school. In my current school they assign you a different flight instructor everytime according to who will be available the day you want to go fly. The problem is everyone tells you how to do things differently and when you do that with another flight instructor, they will be mad and tell you it's wrong to do it that way. I am so fed up.

Sometimes, some people just do not get along with each other, and that is what happened with me and an instructor I "fired" after 4 lessons. At the end of my flight lessons with this person I was: angry, hated flying and did not want to fly again. A flight instructor is not a cheer leader and learning to fly is hard work. That said, if at then end of your flight lessons you are hating the experience, it may be time for a new CFI. Phoenix, AZ

I trained at Thrust Flight, so did my son. We both had a great experience at Thrust Flight and if either one of us move forward with IFR training, Thrust Flight is our school.

When the flight instructor gets annoyed at you when you insist on doing a complete pre flight of the airplane that's been in the hangar for a few days.

Hello Liz and Patrick. I trained with you 3 yrs ago and am now flying my Bonanza V35B! The training never stops. It was a valuable tool for me to have access to 2 or 3 different CFI's that had a different perspective on several problems I initially had. Often the next guy might have just the right tip to get you over the hurdle. I hope to get back down there soon. Great times. :Tim Sterns

Thanks for these tips. I’ve been working towards my PPL for the past 5 mos, and have gone thru 5 different instructors. I am learning to fly in Alaska. I am 37 y/o with a full time good career. One thing I wish is my flight school had briefing before you start flying, what to expect from your FI and this school. I book lessons and show up and then find out what I’m going to be doing that day, it’s really stressful, I am learning that I have to tell my FI what I need or want to do. Long story short if you don’t know what your instructor needs you to study before the lesson get a new CFI. Also I would recommend going to a part 141 school and doing ground school at the place you intend to learn to fly.

Thanks for sharing Pizza! It is more helpful for CFIs to brief the students before flying. It's like driving to a location with no directions and the only direction given is when you need to turn! That's why we have our CFIs briefs students before flight on what they will need to know. We completely agree with you on that point as well as your recommendations!

As a flight instructor I ask the “what are we working on today” and “remember what we did last time” questions all the time, not because I don’t know, because I expect my Students to come prepared and give them study material for the next lesson and if they tell me what they know we can build off of that.

I think I’m really lucky after watching this video..my instructor owns the flight school and his daughter teaches ground school and there’s no extra cost.he’s also passionate as hell about teaching because he’s literally available 7 days a week. Plus, he lets you make mistakes, safely of course, and doesn’t criticize you if you make them..nor will he let ya make a mistake that could be remotely dangerous, really hands on and that’s the way I learn. He’s also great conversation 😂 good man I’d say. Also, the guy didn’t even check off a single red flag yall listed, and he’s also got a wall full of his students that have passed..I’m gonna stick with him all the way after seeing this video.

Don't be afraid to fire your CFI. At over $200/hr you're their boss!

Honestly my flight training was awesome! I trained at a part 141 school and I passed my PPL checkride at 37 hours. I would say fly multiple times per week and that will really help you to get it done faster and cheaper!

Seven flights in two weeks. I feel like my CFI is frustrated with me. He doesn't provide much feedback, keeps telling me to chair fly but doesn't tell me what to focus on. During flight training, it seems he is randomly picking maneuvers for me to fly but I haven't been shown what to do. It's been nerve-wrecking and I don't feel assured by my current CFI. Is it just me?

Great tips!! As a returning "rusty student pilot" who has completed almost all reqs for PPL, what would your recommendation be on finding a good new CFI to successfully and efficiently complete flight training (i.e. tips for interviewing your prispective CFI)? Thanks!

My instructor is a good guy and he tries, but I’ve been noticing inconsistencies in my training, a lack in my progress to achieve CFI, and frequent cancellations on his end (almost once a week the last month). Also, I’m in an accelerated program but he has always had this “we’ll get there eventually” vibe to him that doesn’t really match the mentality of our training school. I think he does this so CFI students don’t feel so overwhelmed, but at this point in my training, it’s starting to concern me. I started CFI a month and a half ago and I’m only halfway complete, having had multiple stage check failures that required we go back and re-train. I can’t tell if I’m being unreasonable/not doing enough as a student/just being too hasty about finishing my training, or if he really is holding up my progress. I think at the end of the day, I’m worried about hurting his feelings by requesting a new Instructor😕

Keep your flight instructor if they are simply challenging you.............but if your personalities are clashing, then change CFIs immediately. Learning shouldnt be easy, but it certainly shouldnt be miserable.

Fundamentally the student must understand that they are the final and ultimate authority of their own training, study habits, and operation of their aircraft. A certificate is a certificate to learn… the student must understand that they must become the master of their craft even beyond their initial training with a instructor… I think your teaching / praising students dangerous habits and attitudes in deflecting responsibilities. Be the captain of your own ship.
